100 million. How many threads are we going to talk about this…
Yep. The 10,000 people that show up for full weekends 8 times in the spring to watch a successful baseball team does a lot for the Starkville economy. What is I told you “Football” pays the bills for a sport that gets a 6 million media check and still loses money (before NIL), hasn’t won a postseason game since 2008 and doesn’t bring people into the Starkville economy? Seems like that sport should get way more scrutiny.
Apparently at least one more. But I look forward to all the new insights and things I had never thought of that are about to be posted. How many threads are we going to talk about this…
We are part of the SEC because of football. If it wasn't for football we wouldn't be getting those SEC checks. It really is that simple.“Football pays the bills”.
You’re right.
Alabama football, Texas football, LSU football, Florida football, Texas A&M football and so on….they all work together to pay the bills for our athletic department. End of the day, we get over $70 million per year from the TV deal. THAT’s what pays the bills. It damn sure isn’t MSU football’s success that pays for anything (thank God).
That means we get probably 3x as much money from fans of the other 15 SEC schools that is funneled into our budget (via ESPN / SEC network TV subscriptions) than we do from all of our own donors combined. It also means we get 4x to 5x as much from those other schools fans as we net from football ticket sales.
So what does all that mean? Financially speaking when looking just at “the bills”….the balance sheet for the athletic department, it really doesn’t even matter if we go 0-12 or 12-0 for 10 years straight. Provided that we continue to field a football team - as well as ALL other current sports teams (because we’re at the Division 1 minimum), then the bills will continue to be paid.
Therefore, saying “football pays the bills” is overly simplistic and a red herring argument, because nobody is suggesting that we disband the football program.
No, we are part of the SEC because we are a charter member. Our football program has never done anything to contribute to that cause, except be the perennial doormat. We are part of the SEC because of football. So we should sink most all our resources into a sport we can't compete in.and it isn’t capable of denial of reality, debatable. FOOTBALL PAYS THE BILLS, all of them, for the athletic department. If we win the National Championship in baseball, that means football has even more of a gap to pay.
It’s just a low hanging target for people who are frustrated by our football shittiness. Same sentiment as people who just blame the government for everything wrong in their lives.Serious question. Why do some of you guys hate on the baseball program so much? Seriously. It makes no 17’n sense. also, we paid a lot for our coach, but according to the numbers I have seen we are actually paying less into NIL than a good deal of SEC programs for baseball. I really don’t think we are spending insane amounts in comparison to other SEC schools. You can ***** about how much the Dude costs, but that stadium has gotten us a ton of national recognition.
what you guys really seem pissed about is how much state fans support and enjoy the baseball program.
Why?
I can’t imagine being a Mississippi State fan and hating college baseball. It’s like rooting for Kentucky and hating basketball

If it was required for football to be worth a damn to get an SEC check we wouldn't get them either so hop down off your high horse and stop trying to act like you're a member of a different successful part of this university instead of just another "athletic supporter" of the worst performing of the "Big 3" sports the last 3 seasons while spending the mostWe are part of the SEC because of football. Yesh, we get the check no matter how bad we suck. But I will say this. The next 5-10 years could be the most critical in our athletic dept history. This is not a time to suck in football. And we’re still running our football program like it’s 1986, not 2026.If it was required for football to be worth a damn to get an SEC check we wouldn't get them either so hop down off your high horse and stop trying to act like you're a member of a different successful part of this university instead of just another "athletic supporter" of the worst performing of the "Big 3" sports the last 3 seasons while spending the most
