OT: Wanna Feel Old Gen X?

Since everything is a remake/reboot these days, I just did a little napkin math. If we remade The Wonder Years today it would be set in 2006. That's the year Taylor Hicks won the 5th season of American Idle.

The Wonder years first aired in 1988 and was set in 1968. Can you imagine a version of the Wonder years set in 2006? 17 me, we're the boomers now fellas. We are 17ing old man.

If Marty jumped in the DeLorean today and went back 30 years he’d land in 1996.

I wonder which time periods looked more different..

1955 compared to 1985
or
1996 compared to today

I immediately said 1955 but in 1996 my parents still had a rotary dial phone hanging on the kitchen wall. Maybe it’s just seems that way because I remember 1996 and I never saw 1955.

Ha, a few weeks ago I mentioned to my wife that the Wonder Years would take place in the mid00s and how pointless the show would be since that time period is culturally and technologically too close to present day.

She completely missed the point and argued that the time difference wasnt even correct.

It was prompted by us riding in a car with our 15yo driving and selecting a pop punk playlist that spanned 98-08.

No smart phones, social media or Life 360 in 1996. I think that's a bigger deal than any of the differences between '55-'85.

The way we gathered news and information was pretty much the same in 55 and 85. Television, newspapers, and radio were the same, just more modern.

96 is the infant stages of the Information Age of readily available internet and early Internet based social interactions (think AOL).

In '55, '85 and '96 we all watched and listened to mostly the same things. The fabric of the social construct was much more tightly woven.

Now society is a free-for-all resembling the last match on the card during Monday night wrestling at the Mid-South Coliseum.

Had my gallbladder removed last year, best thing ever for acid reflux. Can’t say the same about the other end, it’s a crapshoot. Literally!

We had a house phone in the late 90s. I remember picking it up to make a call and hearing the Internet. then an immediate "Damn it, you knocked me off line"

I bought my first cell phone in 2005. I was going to training for 6 months and thought it was the best way to stay connected to home.

I have disappointing news for you guys. It doesn’t get any better. I’m 71 now, go to the gym 3 days a week and try to work on my hunting land doing something physical at least one day a week and usually more plus doing lawn work for most of the year. It still takes me about 30 minutes to loosen up with stretches every single morning. Im probably in better shape than most my age and I still have aches and pains coming from places I didn’t even know I had. Getting old ain’t for sissies. As a side note, while cell phones and the internet are helpful in so many ways, life was much more peaceful and simple before the existence of the internet age. I miss those days.
