I spent the night of the December 69 lottery in the Skeller. Lots of anxiety and anticipation. As numbers were called those whose caught low numbers drifted towards the back and poured it on. Those whose numbers had not yet been called kept sipping. By the end of the night everyone was uproariously drunk. High numbers in the front and low numbers in the back. A night I’ll never forget. By July of 1970 I was a maggot at Parris Island.
I have a November birthday and my number is high as mentioned, but my number is surrounded by really low numbers. It turns out that’s no surprise:

“The outcome of the draft process was the subject of controversy. As with any truly random process, the results of the draft were not evenly distributed and appeared to cluster together, and it happened that November and December births, or numbers 306 to 366, were assigned mainly to lower draft order numbers representing earlier calls to serve. This led to complaints that the lottery was not truly random as the legislation required. Only five days in December—December 2, 12, 15, 17, and 19—were higher than the last call number of 195. Had the days been evenly distributed, 14 days in December would have been expected to remain uncalled. From January to December, the rank of the average draft pick numbers were 5, 4, 1, 3, 2, 6, 8, 9, 10, 7, 11, and 12. A Monte Carlo simulationfound that the probability of a random order of months being this close to the 1–12 sequence expected for unsorted slips was 0.09%.[27] An analysis of the procedure suggested that "The capsules were put in a box month by month, January through December, and subsequent mixing efforts were insufficient to overcome this sequencing"

Bothers me in high school and middle school where the impact is more meaningful. For college it doesn’t bother me in the least. Many may disagree but I don’t see being 19 yr old being disadvantaged vs 24 or 26 yr old. In addition I have no desire to see someone who starts college a couple years later due to Military or some other obligation punished

A 25 year old is a man, an 18 year old is still boy.

Much to the chagrin of my wife I skipped the draft and enlisted in the Corps. I felt a deep sense of guilt in that i was able to sit out the war while friends and neighbors were being drafted. I arrived in country just in time to see Raquel Welch dance for me and a month or so later I was chewing dirt in the streets of Hue.

Talk about going from one extreme to the other.

Yes. I was really young and remember watching this lottery on television.
A cousin of mine had a low number. Went to the National Guard before getting drafted.

TnT's revenge. If they can't win, they are determined to take all the fun out of wrestling. Imagine being a Hawk fan and regularly sitting through 3 consecutive 1-1 SV matches from 165-184.
Doesn't make much difference for the Hawk fans. The score can be tied 1-1 or the Hawk can be lossing 12-3, the Hawks fans will still be singing "heeeessss staaaalllllinnnnn!"

Years ago I was headed to work about 0500 when I came across a rock about the same size in the middle of the road. It must have just fallen onto the road as there were no first responders around. It is a good thing I wasn't too groggy that morning or it could have been a bad commute for me!

Grayson Clark from Purdue to Illinois reminds me of the old baseball pitcher Harry Rasmussen, who changed his name to Eric Rasmussen 😂

What an event to go through, I can’t imagine the level of anxiety. I looked at my two sons bday’s - one would have been drafted and the other missed. I got half sick just looking through the chart.

Yeah - lots of nervous college seniors during the televised draft lottery. Me … I was always going “in” as my Dad fought in the pacific and both granddads fought in France & Belgium in WWI. Like Bo said: “it’s what we do”. Truth be known, serving in the USMC was a duty and honor.
