Word is this is it and he and UT are trying to build a final 4 team for his swan song. They have pretty well owned the portal thus far. Final 4’s and UT don’t go together but he he is killing it in the portal.

It’s not 100% that Ament is going to the draft. If he comes back Tennessee, Florida, Arkansas, Missouri, Alabama, Texas are gonna be good and Vandy still will have the best guard in the SEC. Gonna be hard for UK to finish in the top 6 unless we get two or three dudes.

He always has a great roster. However, Tennessee is allergic to Final Fours.
And yet, they’ll lose before getting to the Final Four. Rinse and repeat. What’s weird, is that I actually like Barnes. He seems like an ok guy. However, I never think UT is ever going to get to a Final Four. Probably because they never have.

He will still be actively removing his name from consideration for any future job openings at Kentucky though.
Haven’t they been trying to build a Final Four team for a long time now? Look, Barnes has had numerous loaded rosters at UT.
Texas and Missouri are quietly building really solid teams. The SEC will be a gauntlet again and if things don't pickup we're in for a rough conference schedule.
At this rate we could be 3-4 years away from being a SEC contender again if the new AD doesn’t mess up. The next hire could be the most important in UK basketball history. It’s gotta be another Pitino that can pull us back up.
Missouri has done well in the portal plus they're adding 2 McDonald's All-Americans ( Crowe and Toni Bryant)

I think they go after Josh Schertz! He built a D2 powerhouse at Lincoln Memorial in Harrogate, TN. 1 hour north of Knoxville. He would be a familiar and popular choice IMO.
You are exactly correct, MaysvilleKY. Tennessee will hire Shertz and he will be the best coach in the SEC. Kentucky/Barnhart are too stupid to hire Shertz and we'll be eating their "orange dust" for the next 15 years. For an analogy, we (Kentucky) will be like Roscoe chasing the orange General Lee. Shirtz is LEGIT, he can build a team and coach circles around many coaches, not to mention Pope. I've watched him for years and he is simply a terrific coach. I know some knuckles heads on this site do not seem to care for Shirtz but that's because they haven't watched him coach for years as I have. I will make this BOLD prediction: If and when Tennessee hires Shirtz, he will be their Pitino. I'm just pizzed thak UK is going to miss out on Shirtz and he'll wind up coaching the d@mn orange team. If TN gets Hill and Harris, this will be the best recruiting cycle we have ever had; but it’s crazy to think that teams like UK would assemble talent like this consistently. I have tons of respect for the Cats.
I can not say I dislike Barnes but truth is, if you can buy a NASCAR race car but if you are an average driver, that car will get you nothing.

I'll admit that if you asked me three years ago which would be more likely, I definitely woud have said UT would not only make their first Final Four before IU would win the NC in football, they would be more likey to win a championship.
We must remember that Tennessee's AD, has connections to Donovan through his brother who was the coach after Donovan. I certainly don't think TN could hire Donovan but there is a connection.The AD at TN seems to be much better than Barnhart.
Regardless of who replaces Barnes it will be a step back. Barnes has been really good there. Pretty much their GOAT. It would be hard to not accidentally get a Final 4 since Barnes has been there much less in their history.
I agree - was a big fan of Pearl, but Barnes has been an incredible ambassador for UT basketball. I have no idea who we will target when that time comes. I can’t see him coaching more than 1-2 more years
It helps SLU get some reimbursement if they do lose Schertz. It wouldn’t surprise me if that was the thought. It won’t stop a major program from going after him.
