Man my 17 year old dog just died in my arms

He was following me and his back legs just gave out. I picked him up to reset him. He walked 5 feet and fell again. I picked him up and said Benji what's wrong bubba? He looked up at me and just fell limp. I knew this day was coming but God I feel like I just lost my best friend all over again. My parents got me that dog to help me post deployment. I'm sorry for posting this here but I don't know where the other parts of the forum are. I'm distraught and I don't care if people mock me.

Those that's had this happen (I'm terribly sorry for you) should I bury him or have him cremated?

A mod can move this to where it belongs but I feel like I'm in shock.

Sorry for your loss, man. Dogs are like the living historical markers in our lives. I'm sorry you're going through this.

Bury him in your yard. That's what I did with my ride-or-die dog years ago.

I’m so sorry to hear that my friend 😢
We lost of our dogs last October and it was heartbreaking! I would recommend having him cremated

I have a dog that’s 13 she’s a boxer and she’s getting to where she can hardly walk.
Just thankful for everyday she’s alive cause I know boxers don’t live long and she’s been the greatest dog I’ve ever had.

Man so sorry for your loss. It may be a few weeks, or months, but soon you will find a new puppy and life will get back to normal.

As far as burying or cremation, I’ve found out the hard way that needs to come down to what your living circumstances are.

Obviously the ideal situation is put him in the ground somewhere he loved and you can visit his resting place, talk to him and ask God to let him hear you.

But I got burned bad burying my beloved “Gloves” in a yard where a friend promised me I could always visit her grave, then wound up selling the place not too long afterwards. Cremation isn’t quite the same as burial but you can always have them with you, even have the option of making plans to eventually have their remains buried next to yours if that might help you.

Hang in there, my brother. Despite any circle of life mumbo jumbo anyone might try to feed you, death really is terrible and that’s why the Bible calls it “the last enemy.” Thankfully Jesus was willing to pay such a high price for us to be able to escape its permanent effects if we’re only willing.

Dig a hole and bury him. No making fun of ya over here. I've got a 12 year old chocolate lab that probably won't make it till Christmas and his back legs give out on him all the time too. Have to help him daily.
They are always there for us and love harder than anything on this earth. Sorry for your loss buddy

Ah man I’m so sorry to hear that. I know it’s as devastating as losing any other family member. Our pets are sometimes even closer to us. I pray for you.

Very sorry for your loss. I’m an animal guy.

I foster for a local rescue and a lot of my fosters are old timers who only have a relatively short period of time left who are just looking for a comfy house to spend whatever time they have left.

it’s tough alright, but is is better than them being alone or in a loud pound for the rest of their life. It never gets easier.

I try to look at it as it isn’t about me, it’s about them. Sounds like your guy had a great life.

He had a wonderful, full life with you. Passing in your arms was the best place he could be.

having done this a number of times, I recommend covering his body with pelletized lime stone. I usually place a favorite blanket over the body, then cover with the lime pellets. The limestone will keep other animals from trying to dig up the spot. You can wait a season or two and plant over the top with a shrub or tree.

Buddy so sorry to hear that. Humans don't deserve dogs in my opinion because they love unconditionally. At least you were with him at the end so you can take comfort he had you with him. I know a veternarian really well and he told me dogs and cats always look for their owners in the end and he always encourages his clients to stay in the room when he puts them down. Hang in there!

Praying for you man. Unfortunately been there on more than one occasion and it never gets easier.
Cremation or burying, completely your call and there's no right answer. If you do bury...put some rocks or something heavy over the grave for a bit. Sounds morbid I know, but gotta watch out for other critters.

I'm really sorry to hear that. I'm closer to my dogs than I am to people. I know how you feel now.

If you have a place that you will always own or have access to, burying might be ok. If not, cremation will let you take Benji wherever you go. I left two good dogs in ground I can't get to very easily, and wish I'd had them cremated instead.

No mockery here, Brother. My family was devastated when my dad's dog died years after he himself had passed. Like a connection to him was lost. Pets are family. A good dog is worth more than a handful of gold. I feel for ya, Man. Truly, I do.

When we lost our last pup, we had her cremated. The place that did it gave us some hair, a paw print cast, an ink print, and the ashes. If you have land, I think you could bury him whole in the places he liked to frequent. Just be sure to take any mementos before you do. Whatever you feel is best, Brother. Let your grief guide you and get you through.

Very sorry to hear the bad news, friend. I have felt your pain.
I lost my buddy a year ago in a similar way. He was 13 years old and he passed peacefully in my arms. It hurts like hell.
I am thankful I didn't have to take him to the vet to have him put down. That was something I dreaded.

I always wished I could be the man my dog thinks I am...
