Living out of state, I always use M'ssippi State first.
Yup.

'MSU' will be thought to mean Michigan State, even though it really isnt called 'MSU' here.
'State' will be thought to mean Iowa State, even though it really isnt called 'State' here.

Missippi State it is then.

Mississippi State on first reference, State thereafter**

I use both. Probably just say “State” way more often unless it’s a situation that requires more context. Living around here, most folks know what I mean.

I rarely use MSU, but I will sometimes when I’m texting.

Edit: I always spell it out in the context of “Great win for Mississippi State”

I always say State. I worked with a guy from Michigan years ago who was a hardcore Michigan State fan back in the Stansbury days when we are actually good. He and I got into many confusing conversations about basketball. I told him, you are in Mississippi, when you State that means Mississippi State.

In the '92 SEC footprint, outside of probably Florida, when you say State it's obviously us, to anyone worth talking to about sports.

I live in GA & I have one UGA friend that likes to ask which State just to get under my skin.

Most non UGA fans I encounter in this state also recognize this. I've had casual acquaintances that knew me as State Cochise only, & I've called them Tennessee Joe, Carolina Pete, etc.

Used to have a co-worker that would say "Miss State" every time we talked sports, and I wanted to throw my entire workstation at him every time he did it.
I have a coworker from the Midwest that does this. Usually on the ESPN score bug we show up as "Miss St" so for people not from around here I could see how they might think that's what we go by
