Great opponent but will not be the same team. Everything went right for them with outstanding qb play. Great head coach.

RU has a lot of question marks but if RU can get it’s defense up to respectable this game will be interesting going into the 4th quarter.

I thought for sure Howard was a Jewish holiday or something and that's why it wasn't picked but nope! This makes 0 sense.

Yep that’s a brilliant idea 3 years ago when Indiana stunk like us. This will be a beatdown….. at least a good drinking back at the Tailgates in the 2nd Half.

Will definitely have to plan for another meal after halftime at the tailgate. Might as well.

So much negativity on a beautiful April afternoon. Is it not enough to enjoy food, fun and fellowship with your Rutgers brethren during the annual homecoming festivities?

Isn't the Big Ten rule that homecoming has to be against a conference opponent? If yes then the timing fits, November is too late.

I was going to ask about that. I went and tried to search other Big 10 homecoming games this year, but got sidetracked.

This appears to be a thing, and makes sense why RU chose this game then. I searched a handful of B10 schools and every school that had a HC game posted was a conference game. What a stupid rule for the B10 to have. They should try to increase attendance for lousy OOC games for everyone.

Might work out. Who knows?
Wasn’t pretty last year. I think Oregon is still scoring!
The year before that (2024), UCLA was the homecoming game. We lost that one, too. That was supposed to be close to a sure win as you get in the B1G. Before the UCLA game, it was Michigan State (2023). We won that game. And before that was Indiana (2022), which we won, too. At this point, people are complaining just to hear themselves. Looking at previous games, Rutgers has made it a point to hold homecoming sometime in mid-October, which is the heart of conference play.

No because NW played Louisiana Monroe for HC last year.
NW set that game up to be played in October for an easy victory. NW had played several B1G conference games by the time they faced ULM. That's a SEC move. Every other B1G team is usually well into its conference games.

Why do we keep doing this nonsense?Homecoming should've been 9/26 vs Howard, so we actually sell tickets, or 11/14 vs Nebraska.
So many know nothings claiming this is Rutgers fault!!! Big Ten picks the Homecoming opponents of all teams & the University has no say in it. Big Ten rules. For better tv matchups!

IU quite likely another 12-0 season…their toughest game vs a suspect osu is at home…this is not the IU team we went 5-5 prior to 2024…expect a spanking…

Embarrassing anyone would say Howard should be homecoming. At least make it a BCS team.

It's set up by date, late September until early November, and even early November can be suspect based on our first Homecoming game in the Big 10, which was in a cold, driving rainstorm on November 1st, 2014 against Wisconsin. And, surprise, surprise, we lost that 37-0.

The available games were:

Howard, 9/26
Indiana 10/3
Michigan 10/31.

USC was on 9/19, but they do not like to go that early for Homecoming.

Which is what’s happening for us in 2026.

Warm up with Howard the week before.

AI is your friend if you know how to use it, look it up for your self, but the Big Ten Conference chooses the Homecoming matchups!
Gemini and ChatGPT (below) disagree. Is there another that gives a different answer?

“Short answer: No — the Big Ten Conference does NOT choose homecoming games.

Each individual school picks its own homecoming game.

How it actually works:
  • The conference (Big Ten) creates the schedule — who you play and where (home vs. away).
  • Once that schedule is set, each school chooses which home game will be “homecoming.”
What schools consider when picking:
  • Winnable opponent (they want a good shot at a win)
  • Decent draw (not a total nobody, but not a powerhouse either)
  • Timing (usually mid-season, not too early or late)
  • Rivalries (sometimes used, but often avoided if it’s too risky)
Example:

A team like Rutgers Scarlet Knights football might look at their home schedule and pick:
  • Not Ohio State or Michigan (too risky)
  • Not a tiny non-conference team (less exciting)
  • Something in the middle → that becomes homecoming
Bottom line:
  • Big Ten = schedule maker
  • Schools = homecoming decision makers”

That is partially true, according to Grok. The reality is, however, that nearly all homecoming games are against Big Ten opponents.

  • Schools choose their homecoming opponent and date: Each Big Ten school decides which home game (usually a conference matchup) to designate as its "homecoming" weekend. This is tied to campus traditions, alumni events, parades, and other activities. The conference's football schedule (opponents and dates) is set centrally with input from schools, but the specific homecoming label for a given home date is handled at the school level. Schools submit preferences or criteria (like balancing home/away games, rivalries, and avoiding conflicts with non-conference schedules) during the scheduling process.

    theozone.net
  • Conference involvement: The Big Ten releases the full schedule (including which games are marked as homecoming for each team) and often announces or highlights them officially, such as in May releases for the upcoming season. It also coordinates elements like kickoff times for homecoming games (traditionally preferring afternoon starts, e.g., noon ET, unless the school wants a later slot) and works with TV partners on broadcasting. Homecoming games are noted in official conference schedules and announcements (e.g., "HC" designations).

    bigten.org
  • TV networks' limited role: Networks (like Fox, CBS, NBC, and Big Ten Network) select specific games for broadcast and kickoff times through a draft/selection process (often 12 or 6 days in advance for many weeks), but they don't choose which game is homecoming. Schools generally prefer afternoon homecomings, and the conference accommodates this where possible. TV may influence timing but not the designation itself.

    sportsmediawatch.com
In short, the individual schools pick their homecoming game as part of campus traditions, while the Big Ten Conference manages the broader scheduling framework, announces the designations, and handles related logistics like TV windows. This is consistent with how most Power conferences operate—homecoming is more of a school-specific event than a league-mandated one. Details can vary slightly year to year based on the evolving 18-team format, but the core process remains school-driven for the label itself.

Add Grok to the mix. AI is 3-0.

But the reality is, nearly all B1G homecoming games are against B1G opponents.
