Jeff Goodman - Stokes, Not Overly Positive

I don’t think Jeff Goodman is wrong. And Jeff knows Pope well. Let’s hope Pope knows Pope well and is going into this with a gameplan to deal with the challenges of it. Ultimately, Stokes is something BBN desperately wants and Pope wants it to work. Let’s hope it is a success.

I just think Pope is too nice, and I think you need an MFer with Tyran Stokes. I really believe that. Whether it’s John Calipari, Bill Self, [Tom] Izzo, somebody like that. I think he can walk all over Mark Pope, to be honest. Tyran Stokes — his body language has been atrocious a lot of the time.
The more I read about Stokes, the more I dislike.

Why?

Rondo, Boogie, Bledsoe, Randle, Walker, etc. - all of them had reputations of being guys who could be difficult to coach at times.

I'd rather have a superior athlete with a bit of an attitude than the collection of passive "ah shucks" misfit losers like the ones we had last year.

With the exception of rondo with tubby, those players had coaches who could handle and push them. The pope/stokes relationship could work like Rondo/Tubby or could go the carruth/tubby route. I don’t think pope has the personality to handle the UK position and that starts with the handling of certain players that UK will always covet.

So Stokes only wants a mf’er as his coach? Don't think he’s ever said that.
Don't think that's even what Goodman is saying. He seems to be saying that only an mf'er as a coach can handle Stokes. Not that a nice guy can't get Stokes.

But Goodman knows he has a large platform. He’s been taking shots at Pope this whole season and actively ADDING to the negative recruiting against Pope and UK.
After he initially was one of national media’s most pro Pope guys, and helped sell him to our fanbase.
If he really wants to help Pope, he should keep his mouth shut. Stop forcing stories to fill airtime. Stokes might not even be that difficult of a player.
He’s basically saying “Pope can’t handle elite talent”. Screw him. He’s Pope’s friend right? What a pal.
These media types are all backstabbing worms.

Stokes strikes me as a guy that will pull a Sharpe. If things aren’t going his way, he’ll fake an injury and sit out the rest of the season. He just strikes me as that type.
I’ve had that feeling the whole time

Definatley agree. The guy has been kicked out of school for disciplinary reasons and is literally trying to drive up the price on his "stock" while he continues to shop himself around. There is a reason a basically every school has backed off him. He's a walking red flag!

No idea what’s true or not regarding Stokes. Seems all sides are trying to spin things for whatever reason. Not gonna lie—kinda just wish it would be done and over. If the kid is legit would be great to land him. If he goes elsewhere there seems to be some good options in portal we can chase. My days of drooling over these HS kids and the protracted drawn out process is done. Just gonna hope for the best.

Not implying Jeff is correct here but I've been saying Pope is way too nice of a coach and wonder if the players really respect him.

Seems easy to push over but what do I know.

A lot of players these days are soft. It's about finding the right balance for your roster and the personality of the players you have. I wouldn't say Pope is "too nice", but he needs to find his voice at the right time, with the right mix of players. This is something Calipari was good at.

Goodman's problem has been more with Calipari and not UK. Don't know why exactly. But whenever Calipari's name is brought up with Goodman you can see it in his face, he doesn't like him at all.

In his opinion, that is. Goodman stressed fit with a softer coach so thats his opinion. He very well may be right. We'll have confirmation about that soon

Based on last year, how can anyone disagree? We let jq and lowe literally rob us. He let jasper run wild and literally cost us games.

I see zero proof Pope can manage someone like this ESPECIALLY if we're going to be paying him as much as reported. I posted this before but now even major reporters are talking about it.

This entire situation is just asking for disaster.

We haven't seen Pope with elite talent. By your logic Pope should never aspire to land any great players because it may not work out. Makes no sense
Pope let Oweh do his thing so who's to say he'll handcuff Tyran. Honestly, I believe he'll have more freedom at UK. Self coached Wiggins and DP, neither of which won a Wooden Award or championship.

Agree of JQ but how did Lowe rob us? He literally had surgery on his shoulder....

Agree, though all what he said about TS attitude and body language, attitude and such, not good, IMO
This is the same information from before. Stokes’ fighting with teammates, being “removed” from his school.
Nothing new learned.

100% - strikes me as a kid who deep down is a bit douchey, masks it by going overboard with the on court theatrics. He has very weird vibes.

He got a magical no contact injury on the shoulder on the very last day that he could qualify for a redshirt.

He was legitimately injured, that much is true. Also his loss didn't really impact us as much as it was sold. He had one good game and we actually got better as a team when he finally shut it down.

Magical? His shoulder popped out several times throughout the season. He was hanging by a thread and still putting his body on the line. Gtfoh

I think I agree with this to an extent, the best friend parental status Pope uses will not work with this guy. Imagine a teen that is spoiled with tons of money and just wants to party but also be loved for having crazy physical traits. He would need to be pushed even though he didn't like it, Pope is NOT that guy.

That said if we put enough good pieces around him his lazy 12 and 5 would still be nice, as long as he was not a pure cancer on the team - which going back to the spoiled teen thing he probably would be. He just seems off to me, not saying I do not want him who wouldn't but I don't have great vibes.

He definitely does not like Kentucky, with or without Cal. He's literally using his nationally known platform to harm UK's ongoing recruiting efforts, as we speak.

If it doesn’t work it will be the final nail that he can’t be our coach. If he can’t manage or win with elite talent then he needs to go.

Stokes is a diva. I don't think this is anything Earth shattering. The fact he's dragging out this recruitment for so long would give anyone pause. I think Goodman is right.

Goodman is a whiner; he's mad at Cal for moving him to the upper deck in Rupp.
2 questions come to my mind:
1) Would you rather have 8 months with Self or Pope? If Self was a Nike school, he's a lock for Kansas.
2) If Nike is paying him now, is he going to cut bait and flip to Adidas?

I can't see Nike losing because of money and Pope has no backup plan. Both of them will have to overpay.

People psychoanalyzing someone they have never met. 😆
This whole thread is people running off of assumptions they have made based on assumptions Goodman is making. He plays this fanbase like a fiddle.

Most of these goofballs had never heard of Stokes 6 months ago but now they are experts on him, on and off the court.

All I know is the longer this drags out the more hostile Chicago is liable to be for Stokes no matter what his decision is. However if he goes to Kansas its going to be more hostile there for him than if he picks UK since BBN travels for the Champions Classic more than Kansas does.
