Not sure why you don't go with a 3 wood off the tee on 18 with the championship nearly in hand.
Maybe he did.
Maybe it’s different for a pro, but I can shank my 3 wood just as often as any other club. As long as there’s no water in play, I’d say grip it and rip it. If you’re in the trees, better to be in the trees and closer to the green that in the trees and further away with a shanked 3 wood.
That said - no one, and I mean no one, should take any golf advice from me! Ha!
Those who remember the Des Moines Register back when it was a Pulitzer-Prize winning newspaper may remember columnist Donald Kaul. His column was called "Over the Coffee" (OTC). One of his favorite things was writing about how golf is a game, not a sport. Kaul was highly entertaining, and one of the Register staffers who cofounded RAGBRAI. Once RAGBRAI became so popular, the Register suddenly claimed it. Anyway, good to know the "golf is not a sport" debate continues. It would leave a smirk on Kaul's face.

I loved Donald Kaul's columns
He was always fond of Iowa City and in one piece he described how a bank robber in IC, dressed as a clown, left the bank and quickly blended into the crowd on the sidewalk.
The Register was a great newspaper back when.....
