Get guards from Europe who can shoot

Not a small pool from Europe but after the success Illinois had you're still going to pay a premium for the better guys coming over. In fact, don't be surprised to see more schools straight up prioritize them because they understand team basketball and have better fundamentals than many AAU raised kids here.

SHU needs someone who can adequately scout Europe for sure though

Will be getting a commitment from a solid Euro big man today. Hopefully it’s just the beginning of a Europe pipeline for us.

I absolutely love hearing that and really hope its the beginning of a trend, if the money is decent I don't see how they can't attract European talent given the proximity to NYC. For int'l kids I'd imagine that has some weight.

It's all too much. To imagine that a player such as Hines could earn $8-10 mllion to go to college and play while in theory getting an education is insane.
There's a long history of NBA players blowing their multi-million $ fortune and becoming poor. Getting educated in the right way and maturing can help prevent that. And a college education supposedly enables a person to increase their earning potential through life. (With the rise of AI that might not prove to be true any more.)

They are NOT I Repeat NOT going to college to get an education! Maybe in the past but now they go to make money. Lots of money. Education is not a priority! Getting a degree is NO longer the goal. Getting lots of money, tattoos and funky hair dos seems to be the norm. Showcasing for the next school or the NBA is the plan.

Relax Ryan Cassidy. It's a somewhat solid get at best. Nowhere close to "absolutely huge." Not a difference maker anywhere he's been and has never averaged double figures. He would be solid off the bench replacing Simpkins. Can play some defense, is athletic, and has some all around game. Can hit the three if open. Not sure if he can create much off the dribble or not or put much pressure on the rim like Sha teams are known for.

Yawn. So much for recruiting shooters. Hopefully next is a shooter
He shoots 91 percent from the FT line and will only get better under Sha. He was good enough to start many games for a very demanding Pitino. This is a good get at this point.

He can shoot it a bit, although the stats don’t bear it out. He probably should have come here last year. He was sh*t at Texas, and couldn’t beat out some pretty middling players for wing minutes. By the end of the year Miller was playing Camden Heide and Chendall Weaver over him, which is not great.

I suspect this is another case of Shaheen thinking he can fix a kid with a high HS ranking who has struggled in college, à la Garwey Dual, Scotty Middleton, Trey Parker.
Dual now at Syracuse, and after his off-season shoulder surgery, had a decent year for McNeese State. I always liked his potential.

I asked why because the kid has been in terrific spots to succeed his entire college career. Perhaps he breaks out as a senior because that’s why older players with talent do sometimes, but I don’t think this is a scenario where a kid has been buried for years or not given opportunities. If anything he has been put in a position to have success from the jump.

Wel. He's never been given the keys to the bus anywhere hes been either like he will next year.. always looking over his shoulder with every mistake made...

Good for him and his bank account, but he still has the exact same limitations and they are a killer on a Sha-coached offensively inept team. We wouldn't want him. Or at least I wouldn't.

Maybe he can be successful on a team surrounded by shooters and playmakers, or coming off the bench somewhere.

Giving "the keys" to him sounds like a recipe for another losing season. Would he have started over Mike Williams last year? Not sure.

Maybe you know more than me, but as a sophomore at SJU I recall him basically given the keys to play the 2 guard role. He played lots of minutes and started most of the time with what turned out to be a loaded starting cast. That team really didn’t have a 2 guard, so it was him.

I’ve been posting that I like the addition, so I’m probably more bullish on here than most everyone. But I’m also not taking the view of that Twitter guy who posted above and massively overstated it.

Yea I agree with everything you posted except the part about him “only getting better” under Sha. Lots of portal movement the last few years on our end. I like having an older player who has played for great coaches on good teams and has talent, because the odds are that kid is at least a solid contributor and may get better because he’s already been in college for 3 years competing against high majors with said teams and coaches.

We are going to have a similar roster to last year. Wilcher is experienced, plays defense and has some offensive ability. We are treading water on NIL, so there is no elite shooter showing up again.

If we got him for what would have been Simpkins offer this is a good replacement. Simpkins did not do well against top Big East competition. At least we know Wilcher can play against top competition although he is no star.

He's at best a combo guard who can run the point in a pinch. Not sure how his pg abilities would compare to Parker but he's definitely not a pure point.
Everybody says they’re a “combo guard” nowadays. That term holds no value anymore. It fools the regulars into thinking a player has multiple high level skill sets, when in reality they probably struggle to fill one position.

Same as everybody calling themselves a forward instead of a center.

Hard knowing Hines, Clark, and even Simpkims most likely gone, but I will take this. I heard of this kid being one of top prospects from NJ. I think same class as Pettiford or Corey Floyd, but regardless you got to get talent. The guy got minutes on a decent Texas team that made sweet 16, he has top 5 conference experience. You got to take the talent. With how it is nowadays; this is NIL, it's like professional sports so you got to hope for the best and build with what you have and can get.

That's why I can admit my hypocrisy hating on Bought Johns, but it's whatever.

I do believe this team hands down needs some sort of CONtINUITY. I think Hines is obviously gone and Clark looks more and more likely. IDK about Simpkims, but I hope we can bring him back.

IDK the markets about Parker and don't know if DAR will come back, but Parker and DAR are the guys you need to try to keep some continuation. They both also play hard, passion, and great defensive strengths that Shaheen loves.

Issue is we still haven't addressed the shooting and we need to replace Hines and Clark's impact. I do think Wilcher can provide decent enough offense and if we wrong Simpkims back or Parker can develop more, it is one less thing to worry about.

Hopefully we can have a similar portal like last year. I just hope we have guys from last year us fans can keep rooting for and can be part of the legacy here. Parker is a junior so he has lots of potential to me to be remembered as someone bigger than these players that want their precious short term money.

Really? Why?
Because most guards get better under Sha and the kid has talent. Committed to North Carolina out of HS before switching to Pitino for next 2 years. I'd say those coaches are good judges of talent.

And Sha recruited him out of HS and portal. Coach of the year in BE? Sha knows talent. Grant it, he is not grabbing the top players he would like but I like Sha's judgment of what we can afford and who he is going after.
