His production on the court has been sparse. But he is a pg...

I'm not excited, more so, chagrined.

I always think if this kid just went to the hall out of high school and played all 4 years he had the tools to be an AA.
Why? He’s been coached by excellent staffs and put in great positions to succeed. Imagine being a 2-guard at the college level surrounded by Kadary, Zuby, RJ Luis and either Aaron Scott or Dev Smith. Or part of a Texas group with Swain and numerous guards that draw attention?

I mean this was our bread and butter pre-NIL. Local guys "too good" to go the Hall out of HS that underperform or were recruited over at bigger programs and thrive with us. Sterling Gibbs, Richmond, Dawes, etc.
Richmond wasn’t recruited over. He wasn’t going to be a PG at least not right away for Jimmy B and we tampered the s&&& out of him.

Not sure Dawes was recruited over either.

You say why. I say why not?

I asked why because the kid has been in terrific spots to succeed his entire college career. Perhaps he breaks out as a senior because that’s why older players with talent do sometimes, but I don’t think this is a scenario where a kid has been buried for years or not given opportunities. If anything he has been put in a position to have success from the jump.

Another guard that cannot shoot?
He’s definitely not a PG. At all. He is athletic and can defend for sure. I recall watching him and his jumper looks good form-wise, and Pitino used to beg him publicly to shoot as a sophomore because that was something that team needed and he had so much around him the opportunities were there.

Former Texas guard Simeon Wilcher has committed to Seton Hall via the NCAA Transfer Portal per On3’s Joe Tipton. He has one season of eligibility remaining.

Wilcher made 25 appearances and one start for the Longhorns this past season. He averaged 5.6 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 18.6 minutes per game. He shot 36.6% from the field and 33.7% from beyond the arc.

Wilcher transferred to Texas last offseason after spending the first two years of his collegiate career at St. John’s. While with the Red Storm, Wilcher amassed 64 appearances and 27 starts.

He averaged a career-high 8.0 points per outing in the 2024-25 season. Now, Wilcher will aim to reach new heights at Seton Hall.

Simeon Wilcher played high school basketball at Roselle Catholic (NJ), where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 36 overall player and No. 6 shooting guard in the 2023 recruiting cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings.

Seton Hall finished the 2025-26 season with a 21-12 overall record and a 10-10 mark in conference play. The Pirates didn’t appear in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive season.

Next season will be Shaheen Holloway‘s fifth at the helm of Seton Hall. He was named the 2026 Big East Coach of the Year after guiding the Pirates to a fourth-place finish in the Big East despite being projected to finish last in the preseason conference poll.

With players like Simeon Wilcher by his side, Shaheen Holloway will aim to build on Seton Hall’s momentum. Earlier this year, St. John’s head coach Rick Pitino raved about Holloway.

“I love the way he gets his guys to play hard, unselfish basketball,” Pitino said. “He recruits a lot of no-name guys who aren’t on the radar and makes them name guys. … He’s tremendous, he deserves Coach of the Year. Seton Hall’s very, very lucky to have him.”

The NCAA Transfer Portal officially opened on April 7 and closes on April 21. The new 15-day window was enacted following a recommendation by the men’s basketball oversight committee. Athletes don’t have to commit to a new school by the April 21 deadline.

I do not think he's as good as Staton McCray. But given Simpkins poor play down the stretch I believe the two are comparable although different players.

The key, which I do not know is the cost. Simpkins wanted around a million dollars and to me that was too much.

He can shoot it a bit, although the stats don’t bear it out. He probably should have come here last year. He was sh*t at Texas, and couldn’t beat out some pretty middling players for wing minutes. By the end of the year Miller was playing Camden Heide and Chendall Weaver over him, which is not great.

I suspect this is another case of Shaheen thinking he can fix a kid with a high HS ranking who has struggled in college, à la Garwey Dual, Scotty Middleton, Trey Parker.

I'm probably higher on Wilcher than most of you. I don't think there is a lot he can't do. The trick will be getting him to do it all more consistently. But his raw ability is super high. Maybe Holloway can unlock it. It's always about the right fit.

I don't want a roster full of these guys, but I can take one. And I think he's more accomplished and has played more big minutes than the Middletons and Duals of the world.

I think the difference is Wilcher is more of a proven commodity IMO than those guys. He's actually be a back-end starter and/or contributor on some really good to good teams.

I don't think this is about "unlocking anything". Wilcher has a profile that fits how Sha likes to play, by and large, and he has already played for two demanding coaches, including one in Pitino who Sha kind of emulates in how his teams play defense. This is getting a kid with a lower "floor" who is a fit for how Sha likes to play, and perhaps we get the "upside" of him being a senior and performing better consistently than he has in the past, because sometimes all it takes is "getting older" for a kid to improve at the collegiate level.

That's all fair. I think he's a good piece. He should not be the guard we're counting on to lead us in scoring, though.

Alot of people are "hoping" he breaks out. Never a good strategy. Seems like we are replacing what we lost w the same type of player. Sure u do need these types but not too many of them. Goal is to still put the ball in the basket

It's all too much. To imagine that a player such as Hines could earn $8-10 mllion to go to college and play while in theory getting an education is insane.
