Very interesting considering the talent he had around him, six former top 50 HS players.

I’m having some serious misgivings about Zoom Diallo. Typically when we get a player from the portal that came from an underperforming team in a major conference, you do so anticipating they didn’t have enough talent around them and hope that by putting ballers around them will make them even better. Washington was stacked with freshmen and portal players. 5 star Steinbach averaged 18 and 11 with 1.2 blocks but aside from him and Diallo, no one really improved their game from the prior year. They had three additional guards from the portal that we went after. Wesley Yates, Desmond Claude, and Quimari Peterson. All three underperformed and the only common factor is who their PG was. He’s highly rated because of his size but the scouting report basically says he can’t shoot from deep and is a defensive liability. This is attributed to smaller guards being able to get by. I get that he’s 6’4” but I don’t see the fit in his game. And he was surrounded in talent. They had 6 guys that were top 50 in high school. If that doesn’t give pause then I think we’re getting a little over excited to sign someone. The next PG in 247 is Wilkins who we’ve been in contact with as well. He’s 6’5” but much quicker than Zoom even though his name would suggest he’s fast. Like Soeedy Clayton lol remember him? I’m going to be supportive of what we decide but I really suggest you all look closer.

We dodged a bullet with Thomas I feel. Not sure about this one. I still think you could get Wilkins and Blyden for the hype around this kid and probably get them both for what he is asking. Then you get size, speed, shooting, defense and rebounding plus have injury security so Mason doesn’t have to be thrown into a situation where all the responsibilities end up falling him. And both those guys came from teams with winning records from two man show squads. It’s going to be interesting to see what he’s asking for. I’m actually pretty confident that Pope would take Blyden and Wilkins over him if he could be certain to get them both. I think the fan pressure to just “get anyone” has somewhat tainted the process due to pressure, which I do understand. But this portal is loaded so I think we can have confidence in getting a good squad, but a loaded and great squad is what we want and that makes this decision more intriguing. We actually could still get the other two if we got Diallo because they both can play on or off the ball but I don’t really feel great about him being our game manager.

Wilkins and Blyden didn’t come close to the competition Zoom faced. I get what the person is saying but Wilkins turnover rate is way to high even for a back up against lesser competition.

Sounds like Pope has 2 plans

1 set of players to go with Stokes if he can get Stokes to commit this week. That would include Zoom

If not

There is another set of players he is targeting, which I think excludes Zoom
I think you are right. I would prefer the latter option as the Stokes recruitment doesn’t have a great feel even though he’s visiting soon.

That’s a ginormous bet if true, come Monday, most of the elite-impact portal players will be committed or too far along with other programs.

Man I can’t tell that he has 1 full team figured out for next year. Not even a stating 5. I would love to know what makes you think he has it all figured out multiple times over.

Washington was 52nd in KenPom(record terrible as their luck rating was 360 lol), Claude didn’t play most of the year, most folks have no clue who their coach even is nevertheless knowing if he’s any good.

No one is claiming Zoom is some superstar. In my opinion he meets the threshold needed to be a starting PG on a very good team.

His other most public option is to be handed the starting PG keys to a final 4 team coming off a 1 seed season.

The post mentions Blyden and Wilkins. Call me skeptical that the negative masses online wouldn’t dunk all over signing freshman PGs from Furman and Toledo

Agree 100%
Zoom will be abused by the SEC quickness. He can't shoot. He is just average in all aspects. Why pope targeted him, I don't know or understand. The kid from Colorado or even Oregon would be much better fits due to speed, quickness.

Also would take blyden and Wilkins because they can play both positions. Also like vanterpool and the vcu guard as they both can score.

I really like a larger, tougher point guard like Zoom. If you look at his stats he was one of the best pick and roll playmakers out there. There is a reason Zona is pulling out all the stops to get him in for a visit.
Arizona will have much better talent around him and play a more wide open offense.
UK with Pope is one dimensional and has less talent

Arizona was notoriously not a “wide open offense” last year. They were really good on offense but it was by abusing you around the basket and getting rebounds. National rankings: 2nd in 2pt attempts and makes, 2nd in rebounding, and 4th in FT attempts and makes. 360th in 3pt attempts.

I don’t know how their team stacks up next season but I’m guessing it will be similar. I’m guessing they see Zoom as comparable to Bradley in terms of size and play style.

A lot of fantasy conjecture going on here first off Stokes will take his visit say all the proper things and then commit to Kansas. These other top players will not commit to Pope they are using ky to leverage higher deals with the school they want to play for We all have watched this movie of desperation before.

Maybe the wrong move, but take whoever commits first on Monday, wish the rest the best on their journey. I'm sick of the hat on the table garbage, players holding out on us. Make them take it or leave it, and make it public.
