Of course they have their evaluation and that's why they are taking him. We have one of the few staffs in America still together from when he was in high school, luckily I guess. Hope he finds success here, as I said, lottery ticket, nothing wrong w him as Jones replacement on roster, probably an upgrade.

Need a Zrno replacement too.

Its amazing how everyone, including the mods, immediately reacted like this kid was nothing but a down the bench addition - older, taller guard with these kind of offers? - I'm guessing the staff is looking at him as a starter, and I'm guessing we are done at guard also. Time to look at 4's and 5's. I don't think the other kids we are currently looking to are good enough - time to look at GOOD, and big, Euros.
That’s a joke right? He stinks..

One under-appreciated element of NIL is that its provided a world of message board warriors to combine their expert personnel evaluations with crack financial value analysis.

To be fair, college atheltic coaches, staff and these new GMs have never had to consider financial value analysis when building rosters.

They literally only had to worry about giving out scholarships.
Never had to consider "If we spend $500k on Duarte then we can only spent $2.5m instead of $3m on a Center. Is he worth it?"

I would say professional sports fans (while not actually doing it) have spent much more time considering it.
Literally every offseason it's been a consideration while watching the Nets, Devils and Giants build rosters.

Considering the limited resources of Rutgers compared to the rest of the Big Ten, it's an even more important consideration. We have much less margin for error on "wasting" money.

So your premise is that fans and message board dinks sitting home on their couches are better evaluators of how to spend money than the AD’s, GM’s, Coaches and support staff? Got it.

What is your point? Fans have been entitled to their own opinion for many years

it is the cost of college athletes being paid now that it spreads more into college sports

fans of professional teams have been critical of spending habits of their teams for many years… MANY times they are correct when they see a product on the field is failing and the signings or moves they make continue to lead to failure

it’s an insane premise that we as fans just have to 100% of the time put blind faith the people being paid millions of dollars are making the right decisions all the time and because they are in that position we can’t question based on the information we have AND previous experiences that they haven’t been doing the best job with similar decisions in the past

what reason does anyone have to not be skeptical of Rutgers the last 3 years?

You’re right. Maybe if we move quickly we can send Bac, Fat Koko, and Rutgers Al over to Pakistan to help Vance.

Instead of making a joke why not answer the question

do you just treat your fandom as “I’m not getting paid so pike must know better”

does he know more about hoops than us sure doesn’t mean he’s made good decisions

My point is that the people who are tasked with making the decisions know INFINITELY more and spend INFINITELY more time working at it than the keyboard warriors. Have you ever encountered anyone in your professional life who knows more about how to do everyone else’s job than the people who are doing it?

The GM of the Washington wizards knows more about the nba than I do and the GM of the white Sox and Rockies know more about baseball than we do

but they consistently are the worst teams in professional sports … so why is that? Bad luck?

Rutgers has been mostly a terrible college program for 4 decades … is that because we’re just unfortunate? String of bad coaches and bad decision makers and poor execution on the court

If your point is that Rutgers needs new evaluators and decision makers rather than the current group of Sullivan, Pikiell, Knight, Young, etc…well that’s a reasonably informed opinion based on recent results.

Maybe you didn’t read the post I was responding to that said “professional sports fans (while not actually doing it) have spent much more time considering it.” Lol.

Being skeptical is one thing… thinking you know better, bat **** crazy. Unfortunately with the invention of the internet, everyone is a an expert.

Building a college roster using financial constraints and considerations is literally about 2 years old.

That is Pike’s professional experience.
And his strategy appeared to be "lets pay everyone the same amount".

Honestly, I might consider being in an auction fantasy football league more expeirence in THIS type of roster construction than decades of college basketball coaching experience.

Any roster building prior to this has zero relevance.
It's not just about having scholarships anymore.
If you give Duarte a scholarship, it doesn't impact giving an elite center a scholarship.

Now, every dollar spent on Duarte or Ware reduces the amount avaliable for a rebuilding the frontcourt.

Didn’t say I knew better but I am skeptical

it’s not wild to be a skeptic about bringing a kid in from overseas who didn’t qualify academically 3 years ago right after being burned by a kid who didn’t qualify academically and using my limited data to see he averaged 8 points a game in a league that’s worse on a global scale than the ones Zrno and Denis came from

I hope he does well as a fan but I am a skeptic

Um dorien jones

Stop. You err on the negative side but come on. It’s not the same. Pike knew there was a good chance Jones wouldn’t be eligible. He was our last pick up of the cycle when only complete garbage was available as an alternative. And his academic situation was new and pending.

This kid was a 2022 commit at NM. He didn’t qualify that year and went to DR and played pro instead. It’s now 4 years later and he’s our first portal pick up. There’s no way Pike hasn’t vetted his qualification. It wasn’t that he didn’t do it with Jones - he just didn’t care because we weren’t landing anything playable at that point anyway.

How does a grown *** man that's been playing professionally in the DR after failing out once already now qualify academically? Im not even doubting that he does qualify, but how? They take an entry exam or something?
I don’t think he failed out. He was never on the roster. He didn’t qualify in the first place and chose to go play pro. Now going to college has economic appeal so he’s interested again I guess.

Money and crappy fan support from guys like 95 and bac are a big part of our problem----who needs enemies when you have" friends" like that.

That might be true but what does that have to do with whether we can be skeptical as fans after decades of bad decisions and bad results

even our most successful coach has had more bad seasons than good…

OR lack of m University support and commitment to winning. Prior to 3 years ago it was all on the school and its unwillingness to pay for proven coach.

lol. We had an AD that wouldn’t support NIL. That was 100% the problem. Even if you think Pike was the issue, no coach was coming here with the NIL support Pike received. Exactly why Willard left MD and they had more NIL money than RU.

Umm for the last 40 years NIL was not the problem or the fans it was 10000% on the university and it’s commitment to excellence.

The last 3 years yes NIL and Hobbs dropped the ball but Pike not putting in any effort maginified the problem.

One of those 3 years Pike had top 15 money on the floor so it was not a NIL problem.

This is a University commitment issue. Bad head coaching and leadership.

I guess the women's team has their own budget? Those are the type of transfers people want to see. Former 5 and 4 star twins from the sec and another former 4 star recruit from the sec. I'm assuming it's cheaper to get players in women's ball but still..when they bring in some front court players on the mens side, they need to be high caliber.

No I'm not, and very few here think I am. He's a good player who had significant offers and got lost because of academics. Why would anyone think this kid would go from having offers from Illinois and South Carolina three years ago to being a bench player at Rutgers. That's just f%$king stupid.

How much training and high level coaching has he received outside the college basketball system? To continue on his projection from 3 years ago that garnered interest from Illinois and South Carolina.

Also, even kids in college basketball programs have regressed and gone from elite prospect to less than a bench player at Rutgers.

Do you know something we don't know about his training the last three years, or how good his coaching has been? Sounds like a lot of supposition.
