Keeneland Discussion - Pope Recruit Visits

I keep hearing people being negative about Pope bringing Zoom (and recruits in general) to keeneland.

This thought is absolutely outrageous. Keeneland is something Lexington has that makes us stand out amongst other university suitors. It is a Lexington staple. It is a place that shows what Lexington is all about - in a nutshell. It also shows how beautiful Lexington can be with the right weather.

After the Zoom posts, I have seen SO many haters talking about how "I have never been interested in Keeneland", "Keeneland seems boring*, "these kids are probably bored by Keeneland."

If you think that, then you have probably never been as a college student, or at any age for that matter, especially if you have money for prime seating

It is at the heart of what it means to grow up in Lexington - the horse capital of the world. It has historical customs - guys and girls get dressed up, head to toe, with the "classiest* outfits they have.

People arrive at 7-8am in the morning to save spots to tailgate (maybe even more hardcore that college football). People have kegs in the back of their truck.

Women are wearing their, sometimes pretty revealing, sundresses. Men are in suits and ties. Everyone is hammered by noon.

The place is completely packed to the point it's hard to walk. Hence why it is so cool to have box seats, or the space someone like Zoom would have had.

It is the epitome of Lexington: Horses, blue grass, tailgating, good weather, bourbon, heavy drinking, beautiful women, "classy men" (IDK about that, but at least they looks their best in suit and tie), old money, green spaces, historical customs, loyal fanbase, people showing out for Kentucky, etc. I could probably go on. (I might edit, but that's enough for now.)

Keeneland is honestly crazy. The people talking about it negatively are probably the Eastern Kentucky coal minors who have never seen a reason to save the money to go, people who never actually graduated from UK nor lived in Lexington, older homebodies with kids, introverts who do not like to go out to crowded places, people without a friend group to go with, etc. Those are the people that don't like Keeneland. Hell, even my parents took me and my brother there as kids.

Keeneland is a Lexington staple. Keeneland is something that makes Lexington, and UK, different than any other school. It is probably the best place to show what Lexington is about during the BB and FB off-season. Where else would you go?

These kids have, probably, never seen anything like these crazy white people going crazy like this in their entire lives. I truly believe the people trashing Keeneland have never been, are introverts, or don't have a group to go with. That place is insane. And again - the women are beautiful. (I know I keep mentioning that, but I truly believe that is something a young, soon to be MILLIONAIRE, takes into account.)

Some of these people will just hate on Pope for anything....

I have zero interest in Keeneland and I’d say many basketball players are not interested in Keeneland. But I don’t think it’s really about Keeneland, so much as showing how big the fanbase is, how engaging it is and how much celebrity there is being a Wildcat. I think Keeneland is a way of identifying whether or not a kid likes the attention and smoke this jersey brings. Don’t care how many “whiffs” — I think Keeneland is a good idea.

You must be too young to go to Keeneland. Girls , girls, girls. Every team in America wishes they had a Keeneland.

I have zero interest going out in public where heavy drinking is involved. The general population is full of idiots and morons. I wish I could enjoy Keeneland without people (never going to happen.)

For a college kid however, I don’t think it’s the worst thing in the world.
It’s old folks drinking. And the recruits are not drinking there.

So Pope introduces them to old people with bourbon breath and they’re supposed to act ‘charmed’.

Awkward.

I love Keeneland. But I am in the horse business a little. But I also love Saratoga, Oaklawn Park, The Fairgrounds and Santa Anita. Also Turfway and Ellis Park.

But I have no idea what a high level basketball recruit would think. I would guess they would like the crowd more than the actual racing.

I can see it giving a player a taste of what Lexington is all about.

And don’t forget where the real NIL money is coming from.

Well, to me, just good quality time, my son attended UF, they don’t have much there either, probably less than Lexington. Tour the campus, go over his fit with the program and a nice dinner.

Pope does those things too. Diallo went to Rupp, Carson's, and obviously they talked fit.

Calipari had the players go to Keeneland too. Maybe that's the issue for some is that Pope is standing with the players.

This discussion the past day or two has really been surprising to me. Every coach at UK during my lifetime has brought recruits to Keeneland. This has been a tradition that was always celebrated within the fanbase for as long as I can remember.

Pope's sales pitch apparently sucks for a lot of recruits, but it certainly isn't because of Keeneland.

THIS! It’s been a thing for Kentucky Basketball as far back as I can remember too. Just a bunch of haters.

Keeneland is also a place where UK boosters congregate. I doubt that Pope and the recruit are only there to watch the horses.

If you've never been you should go. Otherwise it's a fun day off with the office tailgating and all. As an old married dude with kids , I'd have no other reason to go.

Girls in sundresses, alcohol, vibes, horses, beautiful weather, betting, racing, and thousands of UK fans rooting for and introducing themselves to the kid and Pope and showing the prospects how passionate the fans are. I don't understand why people **** on Keeneland. Lol

Exactly. 50 year old + crowd think kids overwhelmingly are breaking down walls to place losing bets for moment long races.

It's all good until you step on a big pile of fresh horse turds on the walkway.

Personally if I wanted to show off the beauty of Kentucky and their horses, I'd take them to the Kentucky Horse Park. It is infinitely more majestic on sunny day than Keeneland has ever been.

This is a 2 Americas situation. Basketball recruits that aren’t from Kentucky don’t care about that bro. They just don’t.

How much am I gonna play?
How much you gonna pay?

I’ve always assumed coaches take recruits to Keeneland for the ladies, not the horses. They’ve all done it. It’s not like a coach can just personally escort a recruit to house parties on a Saturday night to get a feel for that aspect. Also not like a high school kid truly gives a crap about a horse race. It’s for the ‘scenery’.

However, given what college sports has become (a joke), it seems like a briefcase full of cash sitting open on a table and a “there’s more where that came from…” whisper would do 99.9% of the talking for today’s hired guns.

I think if you need to fill out a player or two, maybe you go to Keenland. When you have no roster and you need players, you’ve got a move as fast as you can. That means come in for a visit and get a verbal while they’re on campus not at keenland. Some coaches know how to use that to their benefit. Pope just does it because he thinks it’s some kind of right of passage.. He probably doesn’t even know what’s going on over there gambling and all..

If the kid and their agent are present, it's a good networking opportunity for the agent to find other possible avenues to make money, I guess. Other than that, it's more of the clinging to the past, name on the front of the jersey type thing to me.
