For all the hate on the board about Jmike I for one will be looking forward to honoring an actual 4 year player on senior night next year

kid is a willing team player based on his role this year and I think will be willing to take on whatever role they want for him next year too

I have not been his biggest fan, but I admit he looked better last year and showed improvement. I will take him off the bench in a limited role as one of the backup guards. I assume they didn’t have to break the budget to keep him either (at least I hope so), so I see this as a win/win. We just need to add a legit, starting point guard.

This is show business; not show "friends." I'm okay as with Davis coming back but if we don't open up a couple of more slots we'll be fielding a team that looks a lot like this year's disappointing version. It's better to draw new cards than play a weak hand. Pike (or one of the assistants) has to have the difficult conversation letting these a couple of guys know they don't have a seat on next year's bus.

As it stands now they have 6 more slots to fill still I would hardly call that mostly the same

that being said I expect Ware to be gone which is 7 new faces then

you can’t turn over the entire roster

I don't want to be negative, but as it is stands we could be starting Davis, Francis, 1 NEW GUY, Buchanan, Ogbole.

Great young man and happy he will be getting his degree. Should be a spot bench player 6-8 min a game if at all

Shelby is stunned that Ace Bait chose to return instead of getting drafted. He’s a 5 tool player, and has 11 more tools in addition. More tools than Tim ‘The Toolman’ Taylor.

I hate to be Debbie Downer but he’s not a quality Big Ten guard. Eh. Guess we'll be in the bottom of league again.

Pikiell on Davis - Will be a 2nd year captain - tough, unselfish and THE HEART OF THE TEAM. Don't be surprised if he starts next year. You generally start the "heart of the team." You don't look down the bench and say "do you see that guy down there? He's the heart of my team." Starting Mark at the end, IMO, was just to sway him into returning. After Francis, JMike was probably the best player on the team, and when you take everything into consideration the best player.

Bro wants to sound prophetic and profound but then adds Ogbole to next years roster. I swear some posters don’t read anything on here and just comment away. It’s been said 10000x Ogbole is not coming back.

All crucified Simpson but all on board for JMike.

The mental gymnastics and hypocrisy is unbelievable….

Huh? No dude. Nobody would’ve wanted Derek out if we didn’t have Harper coming in. He’s a good kid but not the type to fill a back seat role. Just two totally different types of kids and the return situation couldn’t be more different.

The bottom line is we must buy a front court. Let’s hope that’s what we are quietly prioritizing behind the scenes.

My fear as well
Actually, my fear is we ultimately end up with a worse center than Ogbole and pay 7 figures for it. It’s amazing to me how many folks sit on the side of “anyone” would be better than him when meanwhile we had 2 centers in Fall and Ware last year who couldn’t even make it onto the floor.

And no, I’m not saying we should look to keep Ogbole I’m saying we need to be willing to spend money on a frontcourt and for next year that might mean being okay with J Mike, Tariq, etc. in the backcourt. Upgrade frontcourt significantly. Slightly upgrade backcourt via development of returners and maybe one new complementary addition who can give good minutes. And hope for the best. That’s our ceiling and those suggesting otherwise are being unrealistic about next seasons trajectory.

I think he gets 20+ minutes a game and might even start. Surround him with some scorers and he becomes a really good player.
He is a good program guy but not a power 4 player unless treated like a walk in player. He was surrounded last year with the 2nd and 5 the pick in the draft and was bad.

Pike failing in the portal early

He's a program guy, pass first back up/starting swing pg that scored double digits in 50% of his games against Big Ten opponents this year. He's a big ten player.
The whole team last year was bad.

Pass first? He was 559 th in assits last year? He scored double digit in blow out losses. Late buckets were just given away. Not one guy on the roster was Big ten quality.

someone has to shoot so bad players putting up numbers means nothing.

I hope JMike coaches here one day but a big ten pg he is not!

Whatever you think of J Mike as a player, this is a silly take considering TF scored most of our points and as a scorer his game is more about creating space in iso and drawing contact than catch and shoot. Now there’s no data to suggest one way or the other who got the ball to TF and the position they got it to him in, but the goal in utilizing him best is to feed him in one on one situations where he’s set up to only have to beat one guy. Passes to him that way are not recorded as assists so it’s not showing up one way or the other. He scored the bulk of our points, and it would be borderline ridiculous to suggest the others didn’t score because J Mike didn’t get them the ball. Our catch and shoot guys didn’t take contested shots. They just didn’t make that high a percentage. We had no post guys to pass to.

I’m not saying he’s a great option as a starting PG but if you put Cliff and RHJ on our team in the front court and had to run with him 25 mpg the team would 100% be a lot better. For all who still dont get it - THIS is why we must target better front court. Swapping Harper for one of our guards was worth one more win. That’s it… and he had Ace too to slide to the 4. How is this not clear as day?

No and a ridiculous take! JMike has been here 3 years and has played w Cliff and with out Cliff. He has played w two lottery picks . He has played w your boy TF and has yet to make the offense or defense better.

if your goal is someone small who can get the ball across half court but will not create, finish at the rim and struggles to shoot. Then yes clear as day
