1. talk about generational differences...watching some TV today and listening to all the accolades about the accomplishment of sending astronauts around the moon...fascinating stuff.
But, back in 1969, my wife was about 1 month from delivering our son, who is now 55, which tells me that those of you who are 60 or so, weren't around when we actually landed people on the moon, spent time there and then brought those astronauts back to earth...seems as if we've wasted about 60 years of science...as we're back to where we were pre 1969

2. Most of you know that I'm a middle of the road guy - used to be criticized frequently, and relatively harshly as "both sides". I usually can comment on the good and bad of our leaders and will often comment on some of the "over the top" comments from posters on "both sides". But right now, I have to admit, that things are not going well in this administration. Forget all the promises about ending the war in Ukraine, eliminating inflation, reducing grocery prices on day one....anyone with even a basic understanding of economics could not have put any stock in those comments. But beyond those promises, where we are right now almost makes you want to crawl under a rock until the trump storm passes...inflation, tariffs, deadlocks in Congress, government shutdowns, affordability and..I could go on, but you get the message. I understand the need for those on the left to do nothing but criticize and for those on the right to support..and I really don't put a lot of belief in podcasts from people who only know what they read in the papers or hear from others and spout that as fact, but right now we're in a little (or lot depending on your perspective) bit of trouble, and need to take some significant actions to get us back on track as a nation. I've been through a lot of administrations and seen more than most of you - Vietnam, the Carter year, Iran Contra, balanced budgets, WMD, etc and some of these were bad times, but right now I think this is worse, especially right now that our leaders in the House and Senate don't seem willing to talk to each other...and this just exacerbates the problems.

Just thought I'd give my impressions..Also, it would be nice if posters could debate each other without all the name calling. Most of us are rational (not all of us), college graduates, have kids of our own, have good jobs...can't we do better?

Ok, I'll wait to be called all the names :)

I give this post an A and you don't deserve to be called names, and it would be nice if no one did but you've got to admit that others go out of their way to ask for it. ;-)

I agree.

We need someone willing to raise taxes and cut entitlements, while not fighting expensive wars we are destined to lose. For someone to do this they would need to be completely detached from either party, a true independent. I was briefly interested in trump bc I thought he might be an independent billionaire who could be this person. It did not take long to realize that he was a moron, deeply flawed, a swindler, and not a real billionaire (before he took office at least).

The tribalism will prevent this from happening.

Stopping with Hitler Cheetos and other name calling and sticking to policy would be great

Less Calling everybody out for lieing

Politicians are all lyers and do hyperbolic rhetoric

But with that said free speech is free speech

The Artemis stuff really is chuckle worthy.

I was 5. My parents woke me up in the middle of the night in Laramie to watch the brief landing on TV. Gas stations gave away these little cardboard lunar module kits which were great fun (tab a into slot a sort of stuff). I still get an uncontrollable smile when I see a clip of Cronkite letting his guard down and being human like the rest of us.

Not to denigrate Artemis, as sending a person into space and back is still a huge and dangerous deal, but you get the sense that a difference between now and then is that the modern version seems more dangerous because of the modern tendency to want to completely risk-proof everything. There are downsides to a mindset that seeks to eliminate risk, rather than to simply make an informed decision whether to embrace it. (FTR, I write this while blowing off "active shooter" training here at the office.)

If you have not seen the Apollo 11 documentary from a few years back, please do, it's extraordinary. Even better if you can see it on an IMAX screen. Lots of previously unseen archival footage filmed in 70mm! But what really jumped out at me, compared to modern times, was how we managed risk. These days, you see a guy or gal sitting a panel, and most of the risk management and redundancy is built into software programming. Then, you had a guy sitting in front of a panel, and then (which I'd never really appreciated until I saw the movie) you had three guys sitting behind the guy sitting at the panel. The go/no-go sequence where humans make decisions in the face of a generated alarm at landing is another wonderfully human moment.
