I mean, you could get the top big man, wing and PG for 12 mil. Based on our perceived 22m budget last year, that still leaves 10M to fill the roster…..
Exactly! That’s why that silly number from last season was laughable! Everyone knew it was BS, but they used it all season long to roast UK!

And UK deserved every bit of it for not denying it!

The NCAA ruined people's lives over a tiny fraction of these amounts back in the day.

Not really the NCAA's fault though, is it? It all stemmed from a player suing for NIL rights and then the flood gates opened. Seems to me that its the players, player agents, player unions and morally void lawyers who caused all this.

Do I think players should get a cut of the pie? Yeah.. but looking back, it sure seems like we had a nice system going: players got a free $250,000 education that they could always come back to and the college game (football and basketball) could have pretty good stability from everything from major programs down to the d3 athletes. Sure, some players got paid under the table. Oh well. Maybe that comes with the territory of being a super star.

I guess we dont know how great we had it.

its probably way more. goodman is getting those numbers from coaches who want the prices on the lower side. if he asked agents those numbers would be a good bit more. there is no way juke harris is going to commit somewhere for just 2.5M-3M.

those numbers are from the coaches perspective. they are trying to reset the market and using goodman as a sounding board. if you think blackwell and harris are playing in college next year fro just 2.5M.....those dudes are not playing for your team

Not sure about the free $250K education part of your post considering all the academic cheating. A relative of mine went to a university in Florida and wanted to major in something that would set him up for life but he was told he couldn't do that and play football. Seriously, how many of these guys get a REAL college education?

a lot of people wanted this. remember that. I wish I could go back and see how many of you were comparing these players to slaves lmao. what a joke. that was around the time when we couldnt say gay or retard but we could compare young athletes getting free education, lodging, and facilities to slaves.

I couldn’t care less that they’re getting paid or how much. I don’t like the portal at all. They need to have 2 year contracts. That would fix 90% of all the issues. The NCAA doesn’t want to do it.

Yeah, still don't have a problem with this. It's not my money and the wealthy still enjoy spending. Pope is supposed to be a numbers guy. Well, go get your new team.

To those who repeatedly say college basketball is going to end or disaster is coming, record ratings and a pretty fun tournament say hi. Duke can do it. Florida's had recent success. UCONN keeps making runs. Michigan turned things around quickly. Lots of examples of this working and programs having success.

I have a feeling this is the last year of it

players will be looking for long term deals spread out instead of a single year payday based on the decisions the NCAA is going to make with Political help

I would even argue the product has gotten better. The only ones complaining are the institutions that were making billions off free labor and the people who fight for establishment to keep all the money.

Well, I'd say it's more so what is the VALUE of that $250k 4-year degree (which is actually probably closer to 300-350k now). But still, they are getting a free education, room and board, food, etc. I'm not saying that's the same value as getting a nice payday to play college.. but I think it's a pretty decent setup. Nothing is perfect, someone should or could always make more, and some else might deserve to make less.

I'm fine with players making money, but there need to be contracts put into play and limits on number of times someone can transfer. I'd also make it possible to trade anyone that isn't a freshman.

If they're gonna be pros, be pros.
And performance and injury clauses written in. They can't just opt to sit out the rest of the year until NBA combine time after breaking a fingernail.

Yep the same people rooting it on are the same ones now saying "we gotta do something about this!!" now. What everybody keeps missing in all this is there is no in between when talking COLLEGE sports vs. PRO sports.

The reason the NCAA fought for years to keep their model as close to amateur athletics as possible was not because they knew (like a bunch of others) that once you introduce pay into the equation it was no longer managable as a COLLEGE sports league. Once the model is changed from a Collegiate Athletic league to a free market business with the door opened for players to earn what they want, it cant go back.

People say, "what if we tweaked this or tweaked that and put in restrictions for transers etc" . . . doesnt matter and wont work. Once its treated like any other business it must comply with all free market principles and those will always prevail in courts. You cant scale it back once its out of the barn. There is no in between.

People say, "its alwasy been a business and the NCAA has been making money off these kids for years!" . . . No it hasnt. Yes the NCAA secured lucrative TV contracts that generate a ton of money but where does almost all that money go???? Back to the Universities. And what happens to the money the Universities get? It gets spread back out for amenities and benefits for the players. It goes to facilities (arms race) so the can have the best of the best stadiums to play in, training facilities, meeting rooms, lounges, steam room, saunas, physical trainers, health trainers, nutrionists, medicine, the best food, clothing, gear, travel, promotion, on and on. A study 5 years ago showed that the total cash benefit of all this came to aruond $250K per athlete per year. Thats why almost every athletic department runs in the red each year, all the money they take in gets spent back out.

The only ones getting rich off the deal in the past were coaches and top administrators, not Mr NCAA. And you can argue the coaches salaries are another expense paid by the Universities for the players benefits to get the top level training needed to go to the next level.

So bottom line is there is no in between, and now there is no more COLLEGE athletics at all, theres only one option.

Matt Jones said it wasn't even close to that, however, I know how most on here feel about him so................🤣

Performance based contracts. No more making millions and not playing......if I don't perform my side of the contract I don't get paid. Same with them, they don't live up to the hyped....they lose money.

or go to a school that doesnt include that clause. that would be so easy to recruit against. "sure you could go to kentucky, but if you get hurt they wont pay you a dime. here at florida....we dont have those conditions so come on down"

Hate to break this to you, but the majority of players do not attend class or learn anything. Basketball and football are simply minor league sports.

When they say we are the gold standard, it has nothing to do with our ability to play basketball. It is we pay at a Gold Standard.
