This will not be a popular take but I have a strong opinion on recruiting. My first few years of recruiting I always found holes in players games and passed on them, searching for the perfect player. Without having my desired success I started looking at filling our team differently. I looked at what we needed and what a player CAN do to help us, not what they couldn’t do. Our teams improved a ton. What’s the point I am trying to make:

How about a player like Kenzie Hare? What do we need? I would say a priority is three point shooting. Can she help us? I guess that’s the coaches call but she might be a very good fit for the Hawkeyes. We certainly need to go after former 5* or 4* players but let’s not under value those players who can fill a big need. Hannah and Kylie had holes in their games but I hope we would all agree they were huge contributors to the Hawkeyes success. We are, not yet, a blue blood program where 5*s are lined up to sign. (AKA U Conn).
Hare doesn't move the needle much from my perspective. I guess if she is taking the spot of Kennice and ends up contributing at all it's an upgrade from Kennice.

Yep, Hare is likely not going to draw a big salary and probably wouldn't be expected to contribute much.
I guess you need insurance for injuries and she probably would be someone that is an 8/9 in the rotation.

I'm wondering if JJ and staff had scouted and been in contact with her in 2025 after her sophomore year at Marquette. Consequently she had the "no contact" label to start the portal entry process. Her skills and ISU system might not have been a good fit. Probably not a huge difference in $. The Jr status is also attractive considering 27 commitment Jada S and other potential recruits.

Its been mentioned but Ellie Brueggemann is visiting this weekend, it sounds like she is visiting Nebraska as well.
Nice looking stat line against lesser competition. Will it translate to the BIG?

Her and Hare are the only names I have heard visiting so far.

Dani Carnegie played her freshman year at Georgia Tech. Was ACC Sixth player of the year and All-ACC freshman team. She played with Chit Chat and was coached by Barrett. That’s why we have an in with Carnegie.
ESPN has her in their top ten portal players, will be hard to get her out of the SEC.

It all started in that Rhode Island game when they had great success and then it felt like the next 10 games everyone used the press against Iowa and they kept turning it over and over and over.
Teams began double teaming CCW or Stremlow at the corner of the half court line which resulted in quite a few turnovers.

Every player might be a one year acquisition at this rate!😅

This has to suck for coaches.

We may well find out we wish would have kept Teagan, if we could of. I just don't see Iowa landing top talent, say to 25 portal entries. After that, who knows. Yes I know it been less than a week, but many have do not contact tags. The girl at Northwestern would be a nice add, Tayla Thomas at 6'3".

I was in Palm Springs for a meeting the last two days and Wednesday afternoon I was sitting in the hotel lounge with an Iowa shirt on. A gentleman walked up to me and said I see you are a Hawkeye fan. Long story short, he told me his daughter was recruited by JJ to play basketball at Iowa. She was a top 100 player according to ESPN. Naturally, my thought was why didn't she commit? He spoke kindly of Iowa, as a family they liked the city, the players were friendly to their daughter and the fans were super. He then explained why his daughter chose not to come to Iowa. He said the moment they entered Carver and went on the court, the discussion was about Caitlin Clark; her jersey in the rafters, her number on the floor, etc. JJ pointed out where they hold their "circle".That turned his daughter off because this was history not the present or future and the talk of a circle and culture did not resonate with her.Later that day his daughter told him, I'm really not interested in CC as I will never play with her. In a discussion with three of the coaches they asked about their basketball philosophy and such. According to him, their daughter thrives in a fast paced structure. Again, according to him, JJ did not effectively delineate a strategy. They asked more specific questions and never felt JJ had a solid grasp of their style of basketball. He never felt that JJ was as effective of a communicator as she needed to be as a coach of a major program. Finally, he said money was not an issue with him or his daughter. All she wanted was to play basketball and believe that her coach would further her career, and his daughter did not get that vibe. I will say, I looked this girl up. She is a first or second player off the bench and had a nice, but not stellar season. Now should I believe everything he said, who knows? But his daughter plays at a strong program, that I can verify.

i know many are confident we will get and fill our roster with much better players than we lost through graduation and the portal. Color me gray in that area. I’m pretty concerned that the top 50 in the portal didn’t wake up the morning after they entered the portal saying my destination is going to be Iowa. There’s a lot of work and luck involved. I’ll feel better when we here about a large number visits planned.

Wow, didn't you have quite the lengthy discussion. Jan was Bluder's top recruiter as an asst. coach. Iowa is not going to be a great fit for everybody. Interesting that the #6 player is coming to Iowa. Jan recruited Ava and Layla to Iowa. I'll trust Jan and her staff's ability to recruit.

Hmmm...what, if any, impact does this new addition to the Illini mean to Guyton? Any opinions on that? Just a curiousity for me as I was a little bummed to see her leave the Hawks after only 1 year and then I don't think she played a lot for them this past year. Did she just get recruited over or is this addition going to help her get more playing time/success?

Now this is interesting . . . . If you are, anything interesting you are hearing or seeing? Welcome back . . . have missed you over the last year. Greatly appreciate any insight. Hawkbuck has been spot on for years.

Edit: based on join date looks legit.
I haven't looked thru many of the posts here, so what I have heard may have already been covered. Hare from Iowa St. has already visited (yesterday, I believe). She has interest from Michigan. Hare would be a good replacement for what McCabe offered. Can shoot the 3, has quick release and spreads the floor for Iowa. That was missing after McCabe got hurt. Iowa has interest in Speiser (K-State) but the rumor is her price tag is steep (maybe too steep currently). Iowa appears to be all in on Carnegie from Georgia. Carnegie and Chit-Chat played together with Florida Essence (AAU) and went to G-Tech for a year together, I am told. Addie Deal was unhappy pretty much from the get-go and was not happy about coming off the bench. She let her 5 star status go to her head in what she was entitled to and what she actually needed to earn. Someone has to replace Kylie's minutes and if Coach Jan didn't promise Addie those minutes, then that tells you a lot about the evaluation of Deal by the staff. Callie Levin simply wants to play and the staff doesn't feel she is going to get the minutes she wants, so she is moving on. From another source, I hear she began looking around elsewhere before the season ended and it became well known she was doing so. Intel tells me that Iowa can afford 2 higher priced transfers, but the rest of the roster may need to be some really good mid-major kids looking to play at the next level. Carnegie would be a great get. She can make plays, especially in crunch time with the shot clock running down.
No surprise. Anyone have word on why she seems to dislike Iowa so much?
It was time for Journey and Divine to split up and Divine has some family in Illinois. Those in the know thought Divine was going to select Illinois all along. Her going there now is no surprise.

FWIW, while I am a LONG WAYS from being a recruiting insider, I do know that Coach JJ was on the phone 2 nights ago with someone that fits that ^^ bill. So there is activity on that front for sure.

I would HATE to be a mid-major coach nowadays...even more than I would hate to be a high level coach. :) You finally get a kid, or two, playing well and here comes the "big" school to take them away. I'll say it again...we get closer and closer to "shirts and skins" pickup games all the time.
