Malone’s father, Michael Malone, was on the Carolina Insider podcast this week. (NBA Champion head coach of the Denver Nuggets)

not too much there about the volleyball team, but great interview nonetheless.
Just a reminder that our new MBB coach has a daughter on the VB team. Bridget Malone is probably here to stay, lol. And it is not hard to imagine that his building a connection to UNC through his daughter was a factor in us landing him as our coach.

I bet he mentions her and that connection at his introductory press conference today.

Well, he just said that he knows Pat Sullivan. He calls him Sully. Antoine Jamison and Danny Green played for him in the NBA. If you listen to what they are saying, it is a great hire. Jamison said that he was on the hiring committee, and that Michael spoke with Roy Williams, Eddie Folgler, etc. Jamison also said that Michael was going to keep Sean May and Pat Sullivan on Staff. He has been to a ton of UNC practices this past season since he and his wife came a lot for his Bridget's volleyball games. He said that HD told him to come down to the floor and watch them practice which he was very impressed because he was not originally part of the UNC family; however, since his youngest daughter plays on the Volleyball team, he and his wife are not part of the UNC family and how HD made him feel part of the family by inviting him to have a front row seat to watch the team practice a few times this year. He said that he is from New York. The same as Frank McGuire. His dad was a coach in New York for a very long time; therefore, he has been around basketball for all of his life. He said his dad talked about Dean Smith all the time and that he and his father were big time UNC fans when he was growing up.

No 3397Char. In his press conference he said that his daughter was not a factor. He said that Bridgett chose UNC because she liked it and she wanted to carve out her own path. Michael stated that he was worried about coming because he did not want to interfere with what Bridget had already establish with the Volleyball team and he did not want to take the spotlight. He asked her and she said it was okay. Truth be told Michael said talking with Antwan Jamison who he coached and who was part of the selection committee, Kenny Smith, Pat Sullivan, Roy Williams, and Eddie Foggler where the one's who played a major role in him coming to UNC. He gave HD credit as well for allowing him to sit in on their practices and speak with this year's team this past year also help him understand the family side of UNC basketball.

There in no world where his daughter's ties to UNC, which lead him to visit UNC much more often, did not deepen his relationship with UNC.

Why was Coach Malone at UNC practices? Because he was in town to see his daughter play volleyball and had time to kill. He met the 2025-26 team, staff, and athletic administration because his connection to UNC volleyball lead to it.

Did this connection alone make him take the UNC job? No, of course not. Was it a factor? LOL, yes of course it was.

Three things can be true at the same time: Malone's relationship with UNC was deepened significantly by his daughter playing here. AND of course his relationships with former UNC players and staff mattered significantly. AND UNC is a top job; most every coach would be interested. This is not a binary equation.

As to his comments about his daughter at UNC, he had a needle to thread there. And he did it masterfully. He gave his daughter the opportunity to define UNC as her space. But she said, no, I want you at UNC. That is a beautiful thing; no reason to step on it with these arguments.

UNC Schedule for 2026 is becoming clearer:

Will play Colorado State at home, JMU at home, South Carolina at home, Vanderbilt in New York , and AT Kentucky as part of Showdown at Net, and will play at NEBRASKA.

Much better RPI Preseason opportunities.
