Number of freshmen starters on National Championship teams the last 6 years:

2021 Baylor - 0
2022 Kansas - 0
2023 UConn - 0
2024 UConn - 1
2025 Florida - 0
2026 Michigan - 0

1!!! Only once in the last 6 years has a freshman started on the championship team.

1. Shows how important the portal is.

2. Main reason I'm not too worried about not landing a star freshmen.

Dude come on man, we have a staff that will fail on both fronts, Pope can offer two things money and PT, nothing else, zero bonafides as far as coaching and development. He will improve their chess game more so than their BB game.

The portal really killed that way of thinking. It’s why cal got out. He knew he wasn’t winning anymore so cashed the biggest check he could.
If we’re being honest though, it never really worked like that. Came close a couple times.

Guess how many 3rd-5th option portal players started on a championship team since the portal became a thing?

Hint: Less than the 1 freshman that started the past 6 years on championship teams âś…

If you’re going to make an argument, first make sure that there’s an argument to be made that’s relevant.

Umm Michigan had 3 this year. Too lazy to look back further. Non of these teams building a portal squad to compete are getting 1st option guys all the time. Obviously you have to get the 1 portal stud and build around them, that’s the formula.

Need top tier talent. No one said it had to be freshmen. People keep making an argument no one on here is making.

There are 3 things you need to win a tit

1. A good coach
2. Two to Three good portal players
3. 1-2 very good freshman.

You need a balance.

The coach is the number one thing. If you coach can't coach and figure out how to get the best out of what your roster is, you won't win crap no matter if you have the best portal and/or freshman class.
