Are there two Andrija Jelavic’s?

Someone help me understand what I’m missing here. I keep seeing fans on twitter talking about how much potential he showed this year and how much better he could be next season. Did we watch two different players? This guy didn’t have a good game all season against any team with a pulse. Terrible shooter here and in his European career. Not a good finisher inside. Not a good shot blocker. There’s gonna be dozens of portal guys that could give us more production. He had a TOTAL of 2 points in 2 NCAA tournament games. 0 double doubles all season.

What am I missing here?

Look at Aberdeen and Mo as well. There’s one common denominator. That’s Mark Pope. He’s a complete *** head coach.

He’s a good rebounder and has shown glimpses of being able to score around the basket. If he could only dribble. His outside shot may come around.

He moves decently well for a guy his size and played decent defense against Caleb Wilson, but that was about all I saw. I do think he has potential. I don't think Pope is able to draw that potential out.

He’s a 21 year old former pro that didn’t show much of anything this year. Usually players show glimpses of what they can be and that constitutes showing potential. He didn’t show me anything this year

Is the “potential” based off his limited athleticism or his poor shooting?

3 years of real stats:

-never over 70% FT
-never got to 33% from 3

I’ve referenced it everywhere, but by Evan Miya’s site, he was by far our worst player. Even more than Garrison/Jasper

Mo played 5 more minutes per game here shooting nearly 9% worse from the field and 20% worse from 3. Only averaged 1 point more. Rebounds, assists, steals and blocks nearly identical. I wouldn’t call that better, objectively.

Jelavic played in a semi-professional league in Europe. It must have been a rude awakening to come here and have to listen to world salad about gratitude and beautiful stories. He'll be ok under a different coach.

Yeah he was terrible with Butler, Brea and Amari last year. And Aberdeen was much improved from the year before. Horrible take

Junior Garrison was TRASH
Freshman Jelavic was TRASH

Both have mirroring stats across the board probably got Jelavic cheap and again over paid Garrison.

I don’t understand the fascination with him either. It’s almost like a fair number of our fans have a generalized idea of how Euro bigs play (specifically that they excel at passing and shooting), and projected that onto him regardless of his actual play. In reality, he wasn’t a very good shooter in Europe and wasn’t here either while putting up more turnovers than assists. He’ll also be 22 years old by the time next season starts, so I’m not sure how much room for projected growth there is compared to a more typical 18 or 19 year old college newcomer either.

He rebounds and finishes at the rim just well enough that we could probably do worse for a 9th or 10th man, but I’m not optimistic at all that he’s going to come back and be a star.

Across the board Mo's stats were lower than they were last season. You are right on about the 3 point shooting . He shot 40 % last season and half of that this season.

You just have to understand this was expected. International scouts told you BEFORE THE SEASON that guys like Jelavic take months to adjust to college, much less the SEC. These types of guys are tricky because the switch can come on at any point. Would I be upset if Jelavic went to the portal? No. I didn’t see enough to feel like I missed anything. Do I think he still has potential? Yes.
