Its important because its a COMPLETE 180 from who our coaches have said we were for these many years. I mean I get the whole portal era thing, but Jan still professess "culture" and the "Iowa way" . That's all going bye bye if you have to replace 7-8 players on a regular basis. So the question then becomes can Jan and her assistants adapt not only to bringing in so many new players, but build something from that group that is SO "un Iowa". Just like Kirks squad this kind of turnover is unparalleled at THIS school. Jan's been here 26 years. Can she adapt to that kind of roster turnover, and stay somewhat in her comfort zone?
I think you will probably see the staff target players they wanted initially, so you end up with a similar roster to what you could have had anyway. The "culture" comes from the personalities more than the time spent with the team. I mean, it has to, right, because this is going to be a yearly dance until longevity contracts come into play. Ideally yo have the glue players that hold the flame, and I think you are seeing those players stick.
Nobody wants this, of course, and I'm sure it's not Jensen's ideal (nor any long-time coach's in NCAAW), but here we are. Fans are just going to have to adjust.
But again, pay attention to the players they look at.
Hare (from Chicago area)
if Speiser (almost a Hawkeye last season)
if Carnegie/Thompson (friends with Chat, relationship with Barrett)
etc.
What I would bet, is that they don't look too far outside that familiarity bubble, so if they weren't initially recruited by Jensen or Barrett, the odds of a speed-dating culture fit diminish, and maybe you start to lose that.
