haha, I dig you Village Idiot. You are cool by me.I don’t like that you troll our board. When you get snappy and big for your britches, you may want to bark up a different tree. I’m kind but ruthless.

Not for Pope. You can say that about any coach. If he can get real good recruits, chances are that they will be good.
I guess UK fans aren't the only ones that are a detriment to their team.![]()
That’s not up for debate. Otz turned down the job.In addition to the the names mentioned in that tweet (Donovan, May, Lloyd) anyone else think UNC probably reached out to and got rejected by Otzelberger as well? I would have definitely reached out to him if I was looking to make a coaching hire right now.
Goodman is usually a decent source, Donovan might have just been stringing UNC along as a backup option without ever being legitimately interested in going there, and UNC merely picked up on that and decided to move on.I just can't buy that. The Bulls are officially out of the playoffs, so their season is "unofficially" over. If we must wait for the regular season to end, then the Bulls season is "officially" over this coming Sunday, last game of the season.
They certainly could have made some gentlemans agreement if Billy Donovan wanted the job. Maybe he was waiting to see if he got fired? But again, it was very very likely he was going to keep his job. And for UNC, if there's reports that Donovan wanted the job (again, I don't know if I believe Goodman), then that info had to have made it's way to UNC.. And if so, you wait a few more days.
I am not doubting you, VillageIdiot, but how do you know that for a fact? Has that been reported by any legit sources or is that just your gut telling you that? I agree with you, just wondering if you have a legit source. btw, do you like Otzelberger too? I think he is a great coach. Love how he coaches defense! That’s not up for debate. Otz turned down the job.

Agreed.I texted a unc guy and he didn't seem thrilled with the hire (we both live in Denver, too). I know Pope has jaded some, but if UK had this same process and ended up with Malone, people would not be happy.
Thanks Village Idiot, but you didnt answer my question. Do you like Otzelberger too or not really??u just
Kansas should be taking notes too for when Self DOES leave, which will def be in the next 1-2 years at most. But something tells me they are going to be able to land May.I think this shows that UNC did not learn from Kentucky's mistake in that college coaches will not just automatically throw themselves at a blue blood that comes calling. If UK was smart (big if sadly) they should be taking notes on this for the next search.

I LOVE Otzelberger. He’s 100% my kind of coach through and through. Cut off a left nut to have the guy be the Wildcats coach if it doesn’t work with Pope. Thanks Village Idiot, but you didnt answer my question. Do you like Otzelberger too or not really??
Kansas has long been rumored to pass the job to Jacques Vaughn when Self retires. We will see if the rumor is true possibly in a few months.Kansas should be taking notes too for when Self DOES leave, which will def be in the next 1-2 years at most. But something tells me they are going to be able to land May.
Way down their list. Swing and missed. Settled. Their fingers are crossedNah, fake news, I heard nobody wants to be the head coach at a blue blood, they'd rather stay put at ******* state, plus, I heard the blueblood fanbases are way too mean. Hurting coaches feelings.
And UK would likely get turned down by that entire list too.Obviously he would. Everyone on the board knows that.
Everyone also knows UNC got turned down by:
Hurley
Otzelberger
Mark freaking Byington
Dusty May
etc etc etc
They went through about 10 “no”s before they got to Malone, and I didn’t hear a single one of these hardcore “bluebloods get whoever they want” people talking for weeks about how scared they were about Carolina hiring Mike Malone. It’s almost like they think you can’t click on their names and look directly at everything they’ve said on this topic within the last 72 hours. I have zero tolerance for that kind of cat and mouse game. Let your yes be yes and your no be no. Everyone on here, for better or worse, knows exactly my stance on things. It doesn’t change everytime the wind blows. That’s cause my posts are actually ME not just an internet game.
This is going to be our exact situation, you know that, right? This is a VERY unexpected AND underwhelming hire. Tells me that UNC already knew all of the A-List candidates (Hurley, May, Lloyd, Donovan, et. al.) had ZERO intention of going to Chapel Hill.
You know your college basketball, Village Idiot. I'll give you that! Glad we're besties again!Kansas has long been rumored to pass the job to Jacques Vaughn when Self retires. We will see if the rumor is true possibly in a few months.
You’re preaching to the choir on that one. I’ve taken hell over saying that for the last year. And UK would likely get turned down by that entire list too.
how many titles have they won without him?I just reviewed his coaching record in the NBA (which as others have pointed out is the only head coaching experience he has)...and I have to admit....it was underwhelming considering the talent he had in Denver.
I respectfully disagree. I could see UK landing someone like Otzelberger. This is going to be our exact situation, you know that, right?
Well, in fairness, all the coaches RR listed were NBA Champions. Mike Woodson was a career 46% winner. These things are not the same.Or Mike Woodson.
The problem is we already know how you’d react to hiring a coach here with zero college experience. Some of you use one measure for your own school and another measure for everyone else’s. Malone wasn’t even a top 10 candidate for that job and you know it. Can he coach X’s and O’s? Sure.
What’s his philosophy on the transfer portal?
What’s his high school recruiting philosophy?
What’s his tactical approach to college defenses?
ETC ETC ETC
It is a massive, massive risk of a hire. Obviously.
Well, they have had more success than us since 2020. Two Elite 8s and an SEC title.Keep laughing, buddy. Mark Pope enjoyed walking out of Sweat Hog Arena with the W next to his name. Still waiting on your program to do something significant since the Clinton administration.
Otz issued the most convincing "I'm not leaving" statement I've ever heard.I am not doubting you, VillageIdiot, but how do you know that for a fact? Has that been reported by any legit sources or is that just your gut telling you that? I agree with you, just wondering if you have a legit source. btw, do you like Otzelberger too? Plus he had Jamal Murray.I think Mark Pope was 100% the wrong hire and a bad one. He’s an average coach at best. That being said this is also an awful hire by UNC. If it was us making this panic hire the board would be self destructing.
It’s UNC so I’m sure he won’t be awful because by name alone you make the tournament 95% of the time but I don’t see him suddenly becoming elite. He won an NBA title because he had Jokic, not because he was some phenomenal coach.
I didn't see this coming.
It's kind of interesting to look at the last few blue blood hires.I think this shows that UNC did not learn from Kentucky's mistake in that college coaches will not just automatically throw themselves at a blue blood that comes calling. If UK was smart (big if sadly) they should be taking notes on this for the next search.

I respect your opinion, Cats192.Otz issued the most convincing "I'm not leaving" statement I've ever heard.
He may not have had a formal offer. But there was speculation and he told the media very matter of factly he wasn't leaving. He really went to bat for the university, the AD, the President of the university. His wife is from there. I'm convinced he's not leaving.
Nate Oats gave a far less convincing "I'm not leaving" statement. And then signed an extension with a huge raise.
I think it's fair to say everyone turned down UNC.
And I think it's fair to say those same people will turn Kentucky down if we open up next season.
Not such a ridiculous termination. I thought so too initially but then the dirt came out. Guys like Murray and Joker aren't drama guys and they had given up on him; tells ya all you need to know. Plus he was butting heads with the GM...who coincidentally also lost his job at the same time in a full clean sweep. He won a title in 23
Won more games in 24 and lost in G7 of the semis to Minnesota
Got fired the very next year right before the playoffs while being 15 games above .500.
It was a ridiculous termination.
College basketball is such a crapshoot right now with so few proven guys in this era. Unless you were getting one of the handful of guys who have been successful in this era, it’s all a risk. I’d certainly chalk this up as a better hire than we made in Pope based on coaching resumes.
DAMN....Mark Byington from Vandy turned down UNC?! has this been confirmed or just a rumor??!!And UK would likely get turned down by that entire list too.
And I’d be fine with that but again, he’s never been to a final four either. He was one of the guys I wanted in 2024I respectfully disagree. I could see UK landing someone like Otzelberger.
