Sure why not, TnT have a rich history of true freshman national champs. The list: Spencer lee... And that's the the list. *Two redshirt freshman champs, one actual and one super redshirt who was technically a RS sophomore I believe thanks to a lost year of eligibility because Vs Tech were jilted lovers. Hard to argue with you given that track record.

In fairness, I can only think of one true freshman national champ for cael as well, Mark Hall. Which, if true means David Taylor just had more true freshman national champs in one year than TnT and Cael combined in their careers....That's a wild and concerning stat for the rest of college wrestling outside of Stillwater..PSU included.
what good is a freshman title over any other title if you never repeat? Would you rather your team win the title and you come in second, or you win the title and your team come in second? I vividly remember McGinness telling me that his title was somber in a way because Lincoln lost that year.

Are teams more hesitant/unable to offer that can’t turn down immediately sign money, are wrestlers being more hesitant, or was there just less back alley deals being ironed out at ncaas?

I'm not sure what you're actually asking here? I wasn't saying anything about inherent value of a true freshman title vs others. I'd bet most true freshman title winners win another, at minimum. As far as team titles, unless you wrestle for a very small # of programs I doubt a team title is ever a realistic thought in your head.

Is Keuter really going to try and play football again? Iowa has a slew of young linebackers in the pipeline who are light years ahead of him now. He'd be an undersized DE if he wanted to go that direction and would simply be a depth piece at either LB or DE. In my opinion he should just heal up, put on 10-15 more lbs, and try to win a natty at heavyweight in his final two years of eligibility.
As someone who saw him in practice at Iowa on multiple occasions, he wasn't close to being a contributor or in the 2-deeps. Multiple injuries and extended time away from the sport will not get him any closer. It's clearly not my decision to make, but wrestling is absolutely his path.

Or the portal has only been open since Wednesday and it was a holiday weekend.

The Little Rock guys committed 10 days after the portal opened last year.
Dean - 2 weeks+
Endene - a month

Not saying its 100% impossible at this point but Ben really needed to be healthy enough for spring practice and with that to see how he looked in reps at DE because playing LB seems a bit far fetched now.

The young LB core is really salty. Cam Buffington will be a really good MLB and they just brought in two top 10 national LB recruits. Kirk has one more elite team run left before retirement and IMO its not coming next season- although will be good- but 2-3 seasons.

Crazy to say this given the goliath Ohio St football is but I could see Ferentz vs Campbell in a BIG title game soon.

The portal isn't going to be as exciting as the past few years. There aren't 5th, 6th, and even 7th year guys looking for a new home and in turn there aren't those same guys blocking younger recruits that don't want to wait for them to get out of the way.

AND the money is different starting this cycle. With all NIL contracts over $600 having to go through the clearinghouse moving forward, it's a lot harder to just throw cash at guys.

They wouldn’t pay both to be 197, both too big for 184, and Merrill is going to be a title contender at heavyweight as a true freshman.
You are probably right. I think Ferrari will be 197 but there is probably a scenario that his best option is to take $ to be a 285. ISU also has Herrera though so even if Merrill doesn’t RS they have a solid guy.

Endene. But hey maybe both do.
I'm really interested to see if Endene is actually able to get this year back. I think everyone assumes he would get a medical for it, but I don't think it's that simple.

He was only able to wrestle this year because of the one-year exception that the NCAA put out while they were dealing with the Diego Pavia court case. That was also a pretty well-defined and well-structured extension which is a significant improvement compared to what the NCAA has been doing for the last decade. That waiver basically granted anyone that had been at a JC who would have had their eligibility run out at the end of the 2024-25 academic calendar one additional year. His injury would likely qualify for a medical, but I don't know how much flexibility that they will give to guys that were already on a waiver.

merrill is not going to be contending for a title as a true freshman
Didn’t say he would win it, just be a contender. If healthy he should be mid to high AA at least. He has been a man amongst boys for a while. Had a few close loses to Ross last year. If Ross is healthy, he definitely could beat anyone returning.

If Kueter is healthy he can beat any new freshman and everyone returning. But we haven't seen him healthy yet...

FWIW, with the case not being for 10 more months, the thought is that it will end up being extended for another year--those out of eligibility at the end of 2025-2026 would also now get another year.

That doesn't mean it will have any bearing on Endene, since as you noted his claim will have a medical element.

Endene seems like a nice enough guy but he's also not reliable. And I think his stature eventually catches up to him. Not to take his nice win(s) away from him.
