Are You Genuinely Able To Root For Our One And Done Players?

Once a Pirate, always a Pirate, right?

Before the wild west and insanity of NIL and the transfer portal(as they currently are now)fully set in, that phrase used to mean a lot. It meant a lot to every college sports program. Does it still mean anything if it's a one and done player?

Obviously, there's a world of difference in perception when it comes to a player who comes here for their senior or graduate year versus someone who comes in as an underclassmen and bolts for "greener pastures" after one season. Sure, it's the way things are - and it's certainly not the individual player's fault that this is current state of things - but are you ever able to root for that player again?

Opinions are going to vary, but I'm at the point of feeling secure that these are big boys making big boy decisions, and making BIG money, they certainly don't need my support and encouragement to get by when they change programs like changing a pair of socks.

Granted, I think circumstance can vary. If a player hits a handful of game winners for us one season and is gone the next, can I really have ill feelings toward them? No, of course not.

I will say this though: someone like Taurean Thompson is more of a Pirate to me than Hines ever will be. Could see this coming from a country mile away, but I still feel like telling him to not let the door hit his @$$ on the way out.

Just my two cents.

Yes, I can root for them while they have the Seton Hall uniform on. I was just as invested this year in the games against St. John’s and Connecticut than in years past. I also found this group easy to root for. Next year will be a new roster and I will root for them. Once we get the roster set at the end of summer I’ll be looking forward to a new season of hoops. No, it isn’t what it used to be and that sucks, but I’m also not in pieces over it other than the clear risk it’s putting on the program to sustain. Otherwise, I’m rooting for the jersey and the school over any individual player.

Depending on the player and impact here I may check in time to time on how they’re doing elsewhere out of morbid curiosity or this board bringing them up but not rooting.

No. I watch to pass the time. But winning and losing doesn’t interest me like it did 20 years ago.

Same with pro sports. The infatuation with individual stats and juiced up rules has taken away the fun.

Sorry, I don't think i worded my post correctly.

I meant once they've moved on can you still root for them? I mean, we don't know for certain they are a one and done player until they declare themselves for the portal.

Yes, I will definitely root for them while they have our uniform on.

For guys leaving to get pt at lower levels I have interest in seeing how they perform. For the mercenaries like Samuel Davis Kadary Coleman and Hines I hope they suck at the next stop.

I hope they do well. If that’s rooting then OK. But I won’t be watching their games and following them, etc.

I could care less what they do when they move on. Although, I did watch Coleman season with interest this year.

I have found Bediako and others to be players I felt an allegiance to despite one year at Seton Hall.

It sucks, but it is just the reality that we will never be able to pay top players the same as they can get paid elsewhere. I will not blame a player for leaving. It's a business and they should look out for themselves. I'll root for them while they are here, and while I don't care much about what they do after they leave. I'd be lying if I said I did not enjoy OSU overpaying for 6.4 ppg for Coleman though.

Part of what made college basketball special was watching guys develop over time. That part is pretty much gone for us right now. Until there are changes to NIL / transfer rules, all I want as a fan is a team I can root for. Guys who play hard and we can find a way to hover around the top 5 of the BE.

I dont pay attn to them once they leave. If you'd bet me $10,000 for the name of the school tyrese or the guy who left the same yrvas KR (his name escapes me lol) I would have to pass

For me, it depends on the circumstances of their departure and where they ultimately go.

I had no major issue with, say, Dre Davis moving on to Ole Miss, I think it was? He was promised far more there than he was going to get from us, had a child to look after, and chose a program that exists in a separate orbit from Seton Hall. I was able to enjoy his success there, even if it was a little bittersweet.

Gus Yalden wasn't a Big East talent, but found a place and an environment where he was able to tap into his talent more effectively. And really, what do I care about a kid who goes to Vermont? I enjoyed seeing him play well this year.

That other kid who left at the same time at Dre Davis for St. John's, despite the fact that he had lucrative offers from distant, out-of-conference programs? I haven't written his name on this board since, enjoyed when he flopped, and ignored whatever success he had.

At the power schools with big NIL $$$ they close their eyes, hold their nose and root for the uniform. The students are passing thru the school so why would they care about players doing the same. We are old school alumni of a school that can't or won't compete in this new environment, so it kills us to see the decline and the probable future of the men's basketball program.

If they were 2 or 3 and done, I might care. Otherwise, I have little interest other than some curiosity. as to how they might do elsewhere.

I don't have the resources to light a candle but I no longer curse the darkness. If Hines comes back for a game down the line and Tim McCloone introduces him, I will definitely give him a round of applause. That being said, I don't follow their careers after they leave if for no other reason then I'm busy learning the names of all the new guys we do have.

My favorite one and dones are guys who came to us for one final year and then made a big difference for the Hall. The gold standard there is Andrew Gaze. As for the ones who move on to play elsewhere, good luck to them and I have no real interest in how they do.

I like Gaze, but don't see how he is the gold standard. He and PJ played the one-and-done-game almost at the outset.
A poster above writes that he wishes transfers who leave no bad luck but doesn't root for them. I agree. I feel that way whether they spend one, two, or three years with us.
That said I was interested in Samuel's performance at Florida, and Jahari's at Maryland.
