This popped up in my recommended yesterday. Duke vs UNC final game of '79 season. Duke got the opening tip and scored in the first 20 seconds. Dean Smith then proceeded to hold the ball for over 13 minutes before a turnover after 198 passes and 108 dribbles. It was utterly repulsive Basketball if you dare to watch.

The only good thing it brought about the shot clock. TV about died they couldn’t get in their commercials. Follow the money. Thanks Dean!!

Being born in 93 its hard to imagine the sport with no shot clock or 3. Complete different game and watching experience I guess

Dean was a winner in the same way Milli Vanilli were winners.
Like sure you technically “won” but your product was garbage, very few people in the know respect you, and your lasting legacy is a mostly negative one.

UNC and Smith had pulled this on Duke more than once. In 1966 he did this in the ACC tournament when Vic Bubas was coaching Duke resulting in 21-20 UNCheat win. Bubas was later commissioner of the Sun Belt when he successfully lobbied the NCAA to allow the conference to institute a 45 second shot clock which was later adopted nationally.

BIL doing internship in Baltimore. Unc playing MD. Announcer brought poetry bokk to read while Phil Ford ran 4 corners.

The KHSAA is going to one next year. The hold up for a long time has been getting another person to run the clock and do it well, especially at the high school level. I'm hesitant to see how it goes because I went to about 5 high school games last year and all of them had multiple stoppages because of clock operator error. That could be compounded by a shot clock. Still, I welcome the change.

UK was playing on the road this season and the other team had the shot clock incorrectly reset after a turnover twice. The turnovers happened in the back court but the other team was only given 20 seconds and NOBODY caught the error except for some posters on this site. We didn't know if the clock operator was confused and using the women's rule or if he/she just didn't know that the home team was entitled to the full shot clock.

My point is that clock operator error happens on the college level too.
