My recruiting to salvage next season

First, the departures that are occurring to me is positive such as Garrison, Lowe, and Jasper as it opens up the roster to get better players. The two most important positions are a physical center and a talented point guard who can pass, drive and handle contact, and be an on ball defender. I saw some criticizing the thought of getting someone like Somto. Wrong. He is the type we need (although there may prove similar but better options that will occur on the portal). We need a strong low post physical presence to combat talented big men on other teams. We need to keep Moreno as he showed a lot of development and with an added low post physical center (which was not Garrison by a long shot) Moreno could even be an option as a face up offensive combo. Then the other obvious need is a talented point guard. There will be several portal options.

Also, and I know many will disagree I would pay the $7 million or whatever it takes to get Stokes! Why? I don't think there is any Freshman in this class that is a Boozer or Flagg. Certainly Stokes is not all that. But, getting the top ranked recruit would send a message about Kentucky basketball still being a thing and an ability to attract future young talent. It also would draw a lot of media attention next season.

Of course there are other positions but I am concerned about getting these supposed talented players from places like Arkansas State, etc. You can be great against so-so less athletic competition but too often we have seen that if not capable of handling the physical nature of the SEC you fade. I prefer assessments of guys who have played at major conferences.

My final comment is about Hawthorne. There are reports that he is awesome in practice. This seems a double edged sword. If this proves to be true than why in the hell didn't Pope play him this season where he was needed? So, I have to believe he will still be more of a project but hope for otherwise.

I think we should do what it takes to get Stokes as well, but we need a more full portal picture before we know what to do for sure.

You don't spend money to 'send a message'. If the expense makes sense for what you're trying to do, then yeah. We're not going to just lavishly throw out money because we're UK. This nonsense needs to stop. If players have to accept that kind of money to play here, then they don't belong here. Once all this gets sorted out we'll be back to things being a bit more normal.

Yeah. Not sure I understand why we would do that. Especially after last year’s $22MM figure being brought up constantly.
We’re Kentucky. Everybody knows we have enough money.
Don’t worry so much about sending messages. Focus on winning games

my strategy would be to be:

  1. get moreno, chandler, and williams to return. moreno will be a starter but chandler and williams will have to fight to start but be the first off the bench at that position
  2. land stokes - need to game changer and top talent, have him play a point forward in your offense at the PF spot
  3. focus on a PG, SG, and SF in the portal. need 1 of those guys to be a top 20 player.
  4. have mo d or jelavic be the back up PF, first come first serve
  5. PG/combo guard and center for back up roles

Why is it always about “salvaging.” We aren’t here to salvage we are here to win. With the portal it is entirely possible to have a much better team next year with a real chance to compete. Why don’t you stop the non sense and watch who we sign and then we can start with a knowledgeable conversation about next years team. The utter disarray and doom and gloom is so out of control. The players who entered the portal from our team we wanted to, it was a net positive for both parties. No we have to land the players we need to compete and personally I believe we will.

The 22 million was not well spent. The only potential stars were J.Q. and Oweh. If we recruit 6th men or bench players again good luck. My "salvaging" and pick on the word rather than the thought......is based on what a winning team will require.

Don’t have names of players to target but we need desperately players that can:
1. Rebound the ball - physical PF and/or Center, Chuck Hayes/Oscar type
2. Protect the ball - PG with passing skills, but more importantly handles the ball well. Also a secondary ball handler that can help
3. Pressure the ball - ideally would like all 5 starters have this ability, but especially at the PG spot
4. Score the ball - of course a couple 3-point shooters but some inside offensive presence

Backups - may have 1 good/outstanding skill and just average other skills be that shooting, rebounding, defensive pest.

Players with multiple skills are probably not going to come as backups but look for opportunities to start and make more $$ elsewhere

The Hawthorne being great in practice was the same time as everyone and Pope saying the team was like a ferrari. and we know how much BS that was so why wouldnt the Hawthorne stuff be wishful thinking BS also?
