Some changes: more money going to teams and only the top 10 NCAA placers auto-qualify (previously top 12). They also give last year's top 4 NDI placers an automatic bid, but those 4 also placed top 10 at NCAAs this year.

The remaining 6 teams are randomly selected from teams who finished 11th-20th. Last year it was a random draw from the pool of teams who placed 13th-24th.

However, 4 teams in the top 20 declined. They're all Ivy League teams and declined because of the date conflicting with finals week. They happened to place 17th-20th, so the top 16 teams will all be invited.

Still unclear how replacement teams will be decided.

Penn State will never go.

While being a great team they will duck this competition for the sake of keeping guys fresh for the NCAAs.

They do not have any interest in growing the sport.

OSU and Iowa have the same mentality of scheduling any and everyone even if it hurts them.

Most teams are game to schedule anybody and everybody.

I have no problem with the event showcasing other teams, especially as Scuffle/Midlands etc decline in participation. Last year NDI was awesome and I expect this year to rock too. Dudes wrestled their butts off.
Plus PSU fans... how to put it delicately... well they love public displays of disrespect online, plus they were so rude to Jordan Burroughs in person that he considered leaving the sport completely... I dunno, I just wouldn't trust a mass of them to show up to NDIs and not cause or attract unwarranted trouble. Like maybe it would stay good rowdy, nothing wrong with a hostile wrestling environment, but I could easily see it spiraling into fights in the stands and whatnot.

But heck maybe them sitting out DOES grow the sport. Maybe folks tune in because they like the parity.

A lot of silliness.

What is good rowdy? You claim Burroughs almost quit the sport because he got booed. Isn't booing good rowdy/hostile wrestling environment?

One of the knocks on PSU duals is due to the age of PSU fans it is too quiet, but now you think the geriatrics who attend duals will start fights in the stands.

I'm not "claiming" anything. You're a data guy, the source data is out there. JB gave interviews and social media is filled with vitriol from PSU fans and towards PSU fans. I don't even seek out this stuff and have been pretty shocked at what I've seen in the past year, well beyond the normal fanbase banter. So yes I could see it spiraling.

I thought the drawing thing last year was kind of cool, so kind of stinks. PSU will probably be only team that declines so that will be interesting to see how they pick #16

What’s the scuttlebutt about Va Tech declining?
Apparently the same as the IVY teams, which is exams. I heard Robie speak about it on FLO. I don’t get it, aren’t basketball players playing games in December at that time? They have tournaments then too.
