Football Open Practice Set For April 25

IOWA CITY, Iowa --
The University of Iowa football team will hold an open practice on Saturday, April 25, in Kinnick Stadium. The open practice will conclude Iowa’s spring drills and is free to attend.

Gates to Kinnick Stadium will open at 9:45 a.m. with practice scheduled to begin at 10:45 a.m. Fans will be able to enter select gates, including Gates A (south end zone) B (southwest) and H (northwest). Regular season game-day search procedures will be in place and fans will be allowed to sit in the south and west stands.

Free parking will be available on hard surface lots, while normal ramp fees will be charged. Concession stands will be open at select locations on the concourse with limited menu items available. Additional information is available at hawkeyesports.com/footballgameday.

The Hawkeyes open the 2026 season with three straight home games: Northern Illinois (Sept. 5), Iowa State (Sept. 12) and UNI (Sept. 19; Family Weekend). Other home contests inside Kinnick Stadium this fall include Ohio State (Oct. 3), Wisconsin (Oct. 31; Homecoming), Purdue (Nov. 14) and Nebraska (Nov. 27).

Questions concerning the purchase of 2026 football tickets, including general public, UI faculty/staff and UI student season tickets by current UI students, should be directed to the UI Athletics Ticket Office. The office telephone number is 1-800-IA-HAWKS and ticket information is available at hawkeyesports.com/footballtickets.

It might be a good year to go to Kinnick for the spring game. Havent seen a game there in a few years and stopped my season tickets after the 2019 season (was just getting too old for every game).

Of course the weather will need to be nice

10:45 on Saturday morning isn't going to help student attendance.

Hopefully the QB’s will be allowed throw the ball plenty of times. The Hawks need improvement in the passing game if they want to take the next step forward and spring is the time to work on it.

Have QB's ever not been "allowed to throw the ball plenty" in the spring? 🤣 What exactly do you think they're practicing?

Iowa will be as good as their defense and special teams. Just like most years.

Whether the passing game has been good, average, bad, or terrible, the number of wins have stayed about the same

It’s my birthday so we are coming for the weekend to watch this as I am rather pumped to see Heck run the ball and see his “Gunner downfield passing” he’s going to be a good one, mark my words.

I’ll be there! Bloodies and breakfast downtown first, the the stadium, then Stella’s afterwards…or Pat and Frans in Coralville. Looking forward to seeing the QBs and Oline vs dline.

I wouldn't expect Heck running much, if at all.

He's got a small frame and is a bit of a risk taker, from what I understand. So I'm guessing the ability to protect himself, is something the staff is really going to have to coach into him.

Of course, the best way for a QB to protect himself is to hand the ball off. But I suspect we'll see quite a bit of slinging the ball around this season 🫣

Disagree- dude has wheels and can move the ball on his feet … will
See he’s a gunslinger supposedly but I do think he’s going to be a better runner than a thrower … I have known to be wrong lol but I do think he’s going to be a great dual threat QB like Beathard was but he was taller … will see! This is why the games are played

I hope you're right. If so though, learning how to protect himself will be even more important.

He definitely won't be pounding it up the middle, like Grono.

But I'm all for it, if some mileage were to be gotten out of the boot-game

Correct. Just because he isn’t taller doesn’t mean he shouldn’t or won’t run. He’s not a slender guy. I’d rather see a guy like Heck run over a taller guy like Petras. All one has to do is look at the qb we played in the bowl who Heck is built similar too with Pavia but few inches taller than him. He ran for 800+ yards each of his last 3 seasons. Granted will probably see fewer designed runs next year as we had gronowski did but I bet Lester will still utilizing his legs when need be especially in RZ when its important. And it’s about making right plays and not taking unnecessary contact knowing when to slide and run out of bounds. With spring game they obviously won’t be doing any qb designed runs so won’t see what he’s capable till the fall.

but like Tate and Beathard I like because he’s a pocket passer first but if need be sounds like he can make plays with his legs.

Not every undersized runner is a gambler. Most, in fact are the opposite.

If Heck, in fact has some gambler in him, that's the concern with much running from a smaller/not overly athletic guy.

Hopefully he and the staff figure out how to navigate it and have a good feel for sliding

Depends what one means by dual-threat.
To me it's not only mobility, but designed runs. That would be guys like Grono and Banks.

I'm not expecting much designed run for Heck. We'll see

The last time we played a "gunslinger" back yard scrambling type QB team we destroyed them.

this thread is making me nervous. I sure do hope that the 2nd string
QB is ready, willing & able to go, because it sounds like we may need him sooner than you think.
