This gave me a chuckle, along with a "what the hell is this guy talking about." So we want to limit our offensive potency, not improve it? Got it. Having a guy that can create is good thing, in every single way. Just because a guy can create doesn't mean that's the offense or that he's a "ball hog." In our last two games, we could have really used a guy like that. "Sorry Tyler, we're really not interested, you are way too good at getting open shots and scoring a lot." You know what happens when a guy can create, or can get around his defender and penetrate the lane? Not only can he score more easily, the other guys on the team are often times wide open as a result.
I think it's a balance, I agree that it's really important that Fred has someone running the offense who isn't selfish. I also think JL could have hunted his own shot a lot more than he did. I'm not too worried that Fred is going to bring in a ball hog who doesn't fit the team identity. He lived through Teddy Allen and I don't think we'll see that again.

Frager is that type of guy . Did you not watch the Vanderbilt game.I think as he gets older he will continue to improve in that area. Nuts point is we don’t need or want a Teddy Allen type that is going to just go off and do is own thing and ignore the team concept.
I did watch it. Frager has some ability, but he’s not a pg, and isn’t looking to pass. No, we don’t want ball hogs, everyone agrees.

LOL. You totally misunderstood and that's OK! "Create for himself" is a code for ball hog. We don't want some other team's cast off. Believe it or not, there are a lot of guys out there who can create for themselves AND set up their teammates. I know that this team needs someone who can get to the rim, hit a pullup or just consistently force help defenders to leave their man and find the open man.

I'm thinking about guys like Teddy Allen and Alonzo Verge. I bet those guys combined for a one to one assist to turnover ratio. (Sam was about 4 to 1 in assist to turnovers). We don't want guys like that. Damn good stats but their teams lose.

You most definitely want a guy who is athletic enough to create scoring opportunities when things aren’t working.

I think whoever is NU's primary ball-handler next year needs to be a scoring threat. Doesn't mean he has to monopolize the ball, and I would not want that. But even though Lawrence was a pass-first guy, this year's Huskers were at their best when he was hunting some shots and putting up points - the wins at Indiana and Illinois and the close loss at Michigan, for example. Later in the season he was less much aggressive offensively. That was fine if Sandfort was filling it up, but not so fine if he wasn't.

Sam's production won't be easy to replace, because he had a really good season. But despite what the national talking heads kept saying, Sam didn't play PG. He was kind of a Swiss Army knife who didn't really play a traditional position. Sam was way more of a Dennis Rodman than a John Stockton, and I mean that in a good way.

Pretty close to impossible to define in black and white what Sam did for this team. I mean.... everything? Ok maybe not much in the shot blocking department!

Yeah I always felt like the TV talking heads just saw a short white guy with a headband and declared, "starting point guard!" - even though he wasn't.

And I give Fred credit for that. He found a role for Sam in which he was productive, even if it didn't fit a traditional mold.

My bad, and thanks for telling me it is "ok." I don't want to totally misunderstand you again, so please clear it up for me if I get it wrong. What Nebraska needs is less guys that can "create for himself," because they are ball hogs, and instead we want are guys that can "create for themselves" (aka ball hogs) AND set up their teammates. So being a ball hog is ok if they set up their teammates? Kinda seems like a contradiction in terms. I'm just really confused on whether or not this create your own shot guy is a benefit to the team. It has this feeling of being something every coach in America would want, but you make a strong argument against a guy like that.

Regarding Teddy Allen and Alonzo Verge. What if they were the best option to score? Did they have shooters on those teams like they did this year for NU? If you have Sandfort and Frager and Mast and Lawrence on your team who can knock it down from outside, you don't want TA or AV not passing it to those guys when they are open. But when you don't have reliable shooter, maybe coach leans heavily on you to do the scoring.

It's about when and how often. Sometimes, yes. Every time. No. A guy who can break people down and create for himself or others is fine if they are not ball dominant or ball stoppers. Fred's offense works better with the ball moving side to side. So if a guy drives to the basketball it's right away against a close out with help side out of position. Or it's off a quick on ball screen. But other times he keeps the ball moving and moves. That's the offense in a nutshell.

But if a team is guarding the **** out of you on the perimeter and grabbing cutters, etc. You have to be able to attack pressure. Drive to the basket. Or have someone post up and someone else who knows how to feed the low post. That's what was missing at times.

I want to play against guys like Alonzo Verge and Teddy Allen. There's a reason guys like this are still available to transfer in July or play for five teams. But someone will eventually take them. I think Fred taking Verge was one of those times. He needed a guy, took a chance. Still lost 20 games.

It's gonna be hilarious when Freeman has a good season for Nebraska next year. Only partly joking. Obviously Hoiberg is friends with Mac and will have deep insight into what happened this season, but his highlights from Iowa pop.

HE STINKS!
You know what he did at Iowa in 24-25 right? Averaged 16 and 7, had 15 and 8 against Nebraska. He definitely sucked at Creighton this year, but so did everyone else. No clue if Fred and Loenser could get him to play in our team concept, but if he went back to 24-25 form he'd be exactly the kind of post we badly need. Could be an opportunity to buy low. Obviously I believe Fred when he says the most important thing in he portal is to find guys that fit in the locker room. No turds allowed.
