Roster limits won't be an issue for a few years. Many of our guys are grandfathered.
That was my understanding also. I've seen a couple of posts here lately about this issue and this board is the only place talking about roster limits. The way it was explained to me is any wrestler on a roster at a certain date was grandfathered in for the remainder of his time in college wrestling. It didn't matter if they were on another team.
Approximately correct. The settlement allowed the ability to designate a wrestler or recruit who would be cut as a result of the immediate application of the roster limit. Those wrestlers were then forever exempt from the limit where ever they went. So not ever Iowa wrestler is exempt from the roster limit, but surely some are. If you can get that list you can then figure out how many openings there are.

The $54 question is how liberally was this allowed to be applied? Meaning, say your roster was 38 when the court ruling came down; were you allowed to only designate 8? or 11 potentials? or the entire roster? IDK the answer, and like most things, there are always loopholes on how this is applied.

And the NIL data they publish is a hot mess.
My point was that it's all about what David and Cael bring to the table in their ability to transform talent to make them a little better and their ability to recruit the right guys, not the fact that David is the "new exciting coach." As for Vega and Robideau winning this year if they were at Little Rock or elsewhere, you're on crack. We've seen the DT effect whether we want to admit it or not. Those two Okie State wrestlers who won it all last year were close in previous outings but not NCAA champs...and certainly not beating Kerk and Gable Steveson at HWT and Levi Haines and O'Toole at 74...no chance.. I think the same goes for Vega and Robideau...they wouldn't have won with lesser coaching IMO. And yes, Jax is in his own world; I too believe he would have won wrestling for Paducah Technical College.It has everything to do with cael and Taylor lol no one is coming in with a bigger appeal then those 2... thats ridiculousvega, Robideau, and Jax would have won this yr if they wrestled for little rock lol **** Jax could go to a community college and still run the table, you think his 2 months at okie st made him lol
SHHHHush! You can't say the true part out loud. Better recruits are picking the guys who can help them get better and achieve goals. Vega jumped levels this year. Jax is Jax but getting the right situation was still important. 197 and 285 both really improved during the course of the year too. These guys are great coming out of high school, but most are not yet ready to plug and play as NCAA champs. Zain wrestled more like Angelo as a true freshman but morphed into a turning machine. That didn't happen by just collecting a check or working out without purpose. Coaching still matters.
I dont think you guys know who Vega and Robideau were before they came to college lol they were elite recruits, they werent just a couple of random guys that no one heard of and DT molded into champions in a few months of them being on campus

If it were that easy to put high school blue chippers on top of the podium, Iowa would have done it more than twice in the last dozen or so recruiting classes.

Its crazy how No Colorado can produce 1 NCAA champion and a couple of AA ... must have some up and down coaching there... and CSB has a guy get 3rd last yr, but not much before or after that... its definitely all coaching and not the talent of the wrestlers lol Purdue really developed Joey Blaze into what he is now, they been pumping out title contenders yearly since I can remember you guys following along yet??? I don’t know. More of a general statement. Each individual situation is different.
Though I don’t think it is some cosmic accident he’s had such success with finalists and champs so quickly, his worth is more proven over time. And he’s not there yet.
My comment was probably more relatable to PSU.
You could have made a lot of money betting on Vega to win 141 at the start of the season. Did you? Did you bet on Robideau to win? Again a ton of money. These guys were high level recruits but high level recruits seldom beat 2 time returning champion like Mendez. Quit pretending that was always supposed to happen. I didn't read anybody on this board predicting those two guys to win the tournament. You should be a rich man so fund the program. DT has been outstanding to this point (only 2 years in) at getting his team to over perform at the NCAA tournament. Don't let fact ruin your fantasy. Not true, high schoolers are getting better as a result of MMA, RTCs and quality coaches. Before you had Fried, Kolat, McGinness, now you have many many more.
So do you think if Seidel went to okie st and Jax went to VT them Seidel would have won the championship???

Bro, they were both ranked 1 and 2 throughout the season. They’ve been on campus for a total of 2 months before they hit those rankings. Everyone knows these top 10 p4p kids can’t all compete out of the gate. They are already talking about Miller doing exactly what Jax did this year. if coaching doesnt have anything to do with it then why isn't every Top 10 recruit in the finals as a FR?
there is definitely coaching involved in the success. sometime that only needs to be in the form of 'not effing it up'. but it is indeed part of coaching.

Who did IOWA get as recruits at the level of Vega, Robidue and Jax? Besides SL and AF
Why run to the corner of extremes? Agree with both factors making these kids young champions... insane talent, and a coach creating an atmosphere that makes them just enough better to take the crown. Agree with Spooner that it is situational and these coaches are pulling specific strings for specific kids...individuals.
I am still leary, and not looking for a fuss, but would love to see stringent testing on all college athletes.
PK Kueter Gabe deluca were all ranked pretty high top 10 for sure of the top of my head so was Jesuroga before he hung them up

I will give DT credit on his work with Robideau, Jax and Vega may have done the same if they went to any top 10 school.

I dont think some of you can read or comprehend words... I said coaching has little to do with these guys then talent itself... David Taylor is drawing in these big time guys... they are either hits (Jax) or misses (maybe a Lockett) or big whiffs (Taylor to new but example Penn St with Teske) ... so if a big recruit like Teske or Teasdale goes to Penn st whos the best coach since Gable, and are complete flops how is it not a big red mark for the coaching staff??? But if they have Aaron Brooks come in and dominate for 4 years then coaching is a big deal you all make no sense... its like 80-90% to do with the kids talent and work ethics.. theres less then 10% that has to do with coaching... Cael is a great coach cause he has a great eye for talent, and can draw about anyone to the program, and Taylor is now approaching that Cael level when Cael was in his early yrs at PSU...

Also whos to say these recruiting ranking have any value... youre looking at thousands of wrestlers and think theres someone out there that can pinpoint the best 10 lol some of them are easy to see of course, like PJ, Jax, and so on, but id honestly trust a coaches eye for talent over some guy at internat or flo , not knocking those guys, love seeing stuff like that... but if they were elite at spotting talent they'd be getting hired on a staff... and talent slips through the cracks in every sport at every level, baseball is a great example of how some guys hit their stride at different stages , sure coaching plays a little role, but you think talent and work ethics is the biggest role.
