Lloyd staying at Arizona

North Carolina has a ton of appealing areas to live, and the triangle is really nice. Trying to diss the state is silly.
It's definitely looking that way regarding the blue bloods poaching top coaches. It seems more and more like blue bloods will have to hire like everyone else, and get the best available up-and-coming. coach rather than the best available non-blue blood coach. The advantage they have is they can probably win the competition for those coaches in the open market. Although even then there will be exceptions. UofL is higher on the CBB tier list than Michigan, but Dusty chose Michigan between the two.
It may incentivize waiting a year longer on a coach you're otherwise ready to fire, if there aren't many obvious candidates from lower ranks. That gives you the possibility of firing during the season too, and getting the first shot in the next round of hiring.
Or you can take a chance on a top assistant, like Arizona did with Tommy Lloyd (or UK did with Stein, though I think football is a bit different).
Not surprised. I didnt see him as a fit at UNC. He's a West Coast guy period. Don't think he would fit here either.
Now we really only need to worry about Donovan or May getting that job. Anyone else outside those two and Lloyd is a significant downgrade. Even Nate O

He went as far as Pope this year with a LOADED roster compared to us, LOL. Thank heavens for Walter Clayton Jr.s lighting in a bottle last year.
I really don't want him or Oates but I'd take Golden over Oates all day long. I'd make Lloyd turn us down first, then Byington but there are still others I'd rather have than Oates. He's won nothing because his teams don't play defense. Not to mention, he just seems creepy as hell to me.
The good news is, we aren't looking for a coach right now. We'll see what Pope does next year, (hopefully with a healthy roster. What will really piss some people on here off a lot is that if Pope has a decent year next season, he may very well get a 4th year, too! Some of ya'll will jump off of bridges if we don't win a title next year but it's not realistic anywhere to fire him if he makes improvement and maybe a sweet 16 or elite 8 run.
Just being real with some people is all I'm doing. So they need to prepare for that. It's a very real possibility!

Carolina is a pretty state, might have to shake it up with up and comers. I hope Pope does well next year , if he gets fired or leaves id like a younger coach who's an up and comer. One who has potential to stay for a while... I mean not too many options now.

I’m of the opinion that the cheats won’t be landing an “elite” coach. Just about bet they won’t get a coach that’s won a title, highly likely not get one that’s even been to a FF. I wonder what a lot of our fans will think then. Even WITH the Jordan pull. LMFAO!

I’ve been saying this for years on here! UK is not only a blueblood, they’re THE bluest of bluebloods and it’s a pressure cooker like none other in college basketball! These fools that think we can land ANY coach we want are just that, fools!
People don't get it, basketball has changed. Why should Golden or Lloyd go ANYWHERE. Golden has won a title at Fla, Lloyd about to where he is. Both guys have jobs pretty .much for life at schools that will pay them big bucks to stay. Why go to a " Blueblood" and face relentless pressure, life under a microscope and relentless criticism for every decision. People used to say coaches will come because they want to win a title. When you can do it elsewhere with less pressure and the same money , why come. Please don't tell me for history or tradition, most guys today don't give a damn about eithet.
So the move then is to hire Mark Pope? What are all the coaches that dont want this job, speaking on things of which you are very certain?
If he wins the NC this year (or any other) at Arizona, I wonder if he would leave. He's a Washington native and he spent many years coaching at Gonzaga, so I could see him going home.
Western NC is pretty damned nice but it's filling up with people now. The rest of it I can do without though.
Tucson area has a lot more public land and outdoor activities close by than does Chapel Hill. That would be a pretty easy choice for me if I were choosing based on location. I love the desert.
This is where I’m at also. Keep Oats and Golden away from UNC and KU.

The best Arizona reporter said conflict with the AD was a huge issue.
Honestly I'm over the college coaches. We were going to spend $9 million on a buyout, plus make him a top paid coach, plus a big NIL package. Just go get Donovan or Mike Malone, and put the extra $9 million into NIL.
Oats has already said he isn't leaving Bama. As for Golden, I know I am in the minority and may have to eat some crow but I think he is overrated. Yeah, he won a title but Hubert came within a few points of winning one. Mike Davis had a FF appearance. I could go on and on.
It’s going to take an AD with balls who will sit down with an agent a year before they plan on making a move and planning all this out I think. It will take a massive offer these days for sure. It could be done but it will have to be strategic.
I'm not sure how you came to that conclusion from his post. I think being realistic and logical is best, if what you want is to be successful. I just think he's being logical about it is all. I don't see anything wrong with that but I do think we can get most, not any..coach if the money is right. I'd make Lloyd turn us down first, then Dusty May. I'm not big on Oates. There's more to bball than just good offense and Oates' teams just don't typically play defense well. IMO, it's why he hasn't won anything yet.
Then again, Pope could have a good season next year and I doubt we even look for a different coach. Again, just being realistic here. I think he'll have a good season. Not necessarily a final four or a natty...but a good season. One that keeps his job intact. I know that's gonna hurt some feelings but I think it's pretty likely to play out that way. Gotta wait to see how the portal and any big recruits play out yet. It's too early to know right now.
