We put out an April Fool’s edition of The Setonian when I was editor and it was a big hit as I recall. And I don’t remember being called on the carpet for it either. Our moderator back then — Father Ken O’Leary —was a true mensch.
Seton Hall gives every incoming freshman and 98% of all students some form of need-based or merit-based scholarship. Very significant amounts averaging $25,000 per student per year totaling $170 Million awarded in University aid per year. They need to cultivate a spirit of gratitude and develop their students to want to give back to their school through supporting school activities, volunteering, joining groups or clubs.
Seton Hall doesn't do well with this. Students do not form a positive connection with the University community when enrolled and they don't become donors after graduation. Building a positive culture and a sense of engagement is key for any organization.
Until they build the culture, they should require giving back to the University in some way. One way would be to attend 1 free basketball game per year. That's 6,000 students in the Student Section as a baseline minimum each year.
