Pike gets a pass from me on his first 3 years because of the disaster he walked into.

In the 6 years that have followed, he's 103-86 (58-62) including a 24-63 mark away from the RAC. Bad OOC losses to St. Bonaventure, DePaul, Lafayette, UMass, Temple, Kennesaw St etc.

The fact that Pike dug this program out of the abyss, broke the tournament drought and restored pride have bought him a lot of time. But we've been middling for a while now and the arrow is pointing down. IMO, last year was the most embarrassing of any RU season I can remember, in terms of both results and perception. He somehow goes into year TEN with zero expectations, as the team is picked 17th or 18th in the pre-season B1G rankings.

Will this team resemble the scrappy, pain in the *** RU teams Pike made his name with? Or are we just resigned to a dreary 11-win season?

Massive year for Pike.
With this season (mercifully) wrapped up, we can now update the profile here.

Since 2019-20:
  • The overall record now stands at 117-106 (64-76 B1G)
  • The record away from the RAC is now 28-74
  • CCSU can be added to the list of embarrassing losses
No idea what we're supposed to take from this season, other than it being a waste of time. Sure, Francis and Mark improved as the season went on, but Grant, Davis and others wildly regressed. Other than this supposed cash infusion, what are we supposed to look forward to in Year 11?

Don't know how you can say that about Davis...the facts CLEARLY show he took a solid step forward in almost every category...Davis.gif

I see what you’re saying in terms of personal stats but basketball is a team game. All I know is the more mins he plays the worse our record is and we have lost more blowouts. Hes just too short for power conf play. Maybe regressed isn’t fair but he still hasn’t proven to be a big ten player. He plays more mins and he scores more. His rebounds didn’t increase though for more mins. FTs were pretty good though but 77% still isn’t good for a short G

His rebounds and assists doubled from last year. His free throws improved 12 % points. He shot 36% from 3. 3 to 1 assist to TO..

Would be interesting to look at it all coming off the bench too.

Never said he was a starter but I think throwing him under the bus is unfair. Same with EO.

I didnt look but I bet their end of season stats were much better. Thats all.

He improved offensively but his defense was not as good this year.

I’m sorry, meant steals not rebounds. My bad. He did play a lot more explaining the categories with increases. He’s not going to grow though.

the % increase in the categories effected by playing time is much more than the actual increase in playing time. Especially for year 1 to year 3. The increases in all the shooting % are unrelated to playing time.

I don't understand how you don't think he will not grow when that is exactly what he showed each of his last 2 years... ?

Grow in terms of height. He’s still not a big ten player. His gain in skill is admirable but the more he’s played and the better he’s got we still lose. More length helps in terms of him getting shots off, not getting stuffed at the rim, on defensive closeouts, guarding passing lanes etc.

We’ve lost our best talent and will be rebuilding. Unless Lino and Zrno play out of their minds, this year is going to be very difficult. We have a young team that will be finding its way. People will just have to be patient.

He is only allowed one mulligan and he's already used two.

Yeah looking at those other teams..they are/have giants at all positions.

I agree with almost none of this on Davis - led the team in 3 pt. percentage at 37%, 77% from the line is ok, assist/turnover ratio very good, and the idea he is too small is ridiculous. Size doesn't matter much for a PG. He's taller than Braeden Smith and Michigan's PG., two of the best. The average size for an NBA point guard is only 6'3". Though he is probably a little shorter than 6'2", he is only slightly shorter than Darius Acuff who is considered shorter than his 6'3" listed height. Solid PG's are measured by assist/turnover ratio, ball handling, speed and quickness. I think you're usually right about things - not on this one.

Fair. I respect you and most of your stuff so I’ll meet you in the middle here. I admit his numbers are pretty good (except for FTs, want my pg at higher than 77, and that’s just this year, career iffy). A:TO is outright impressive. Three pt % just under 36, but a point per shot the last two years. The metrics are good and I’m a stats guy, so I’m about to be a bit of a hypocrite but I just don’t feel we’re better with him. Look at our record since he’s been here. I can’t get past his lack of length. You cite two of the best Pgs on very good teams. RU is no Michigan. In fairness JMike hasn’t had much of an inside presence to work with. Maybe id like him better if we had a true C. Also really tough having him and Tariq on the floor at the same time. 40% of my players with a disadvantage on close outs and shutting off passing lanes. But again that’s team construction, like a C, not JMikes fault. I miss Mulchay and Caleb at G. If we retain JMike of course I’ll root for him, just hope they get him a true C, PF and a 40% three pt shooter.
