Former student manager at IU under Bob Knight. IIRC, Indiana could have hired him but went in another direction. Michigan plays defense.

“Recruiting has been much more streamlined and is much more efficient than it’s ever been”

What an idiotic statement. Recruiting in the revenue sports isn’t “more streamlined”, it’s completely obsolete. It no longer 17ing exists. It’s just shopping now. When I go to Five Guys, I don’t “recruit” the hamburger and fries I’m about to eat for lunch.

I'm not sure calling his statement idiotic and then comparing a hamburger and fries to a human basketball player is the best move.

Why not? There’s not much difference at all in how the transaction occurs, other than the fact that there aren’t typically multiple people all trying to outbid each other for the same hamburger.

Perhaps a better comparison is buying a piece of furniture on eBay. Either way, I’m not having to convince the item to ship itself to my doorstep, or the hamburger to be cooked for me. I pay the required amount of money, and the item is mine. End of story. That’s all “recruiting” is now. Pay the required amount of money. Nothing else matters.

I'm not getting into a long back and forth, but recruiting an athlete in the portal is obviously not similar to buying a hamburger. It's not a good analogy.

Explain your position then. Do you really think there’s anything more to it than who is offering the most money?

I made it clear I'm not getting into a long back and forth for a reason. I know who I'm disagreeing with and I know how disagreeing with you goes. It's obviously a bad analogy, plain and simple. That's all I'm saying and I'm not arguing about it because I know you can't admit it and it'll be wasted time.

Well, that’s a mysterious statement. I don’t recall having many (if any) disagreements with you, so I’m honestly not sure what your baseline is there. But oh well, moving on.

Not mysterious. You don't have disagreements with me because I avoid disagreeing with you. I've seen how it goes with others.

I agree, let's move on.

Last weekend I saw 2 D3 coaches I know well- they were out recruiting at a massive youth tournament. All 3 of us were talking and when I get to be in those situations I tend to try and peel back the curtain a bit and better understand their recruiting processes(interest and benefit for me).
These are D3 coaches so the stakes and circumstances are different since money is less, but they are still impacted by what flows down.
Both were high level players in college, in their 20s, and recently stopped playing professionally(lower level foreign teams), so they also recently experienced high level college play and chaos.

Both coaches confidently said it is easier on a coach's life right now to recruit D1 and D2 because of all the player turnover. Its total chaos, but the amount of time coaches must dedicate to recruiting is significantly less. Instead of traveling the country as often for youth recruits, they have college level film of recruits that are in the portal.
So a higher level coaching staff can overall travel less and be home with family more, at least when compared to 10 years ago.

Meanwhile, lower level college coaching staff are still in person at large tournaments just as often as before. They arent landing many D1 or even D2 portal entrants that have college experience and film, so that route is a non-starter. And while every youth recruit has countless hours of highlight film, that stuff is largely worthless beyond being able to superficially determine if someone has some athleticism or not.
And because there is no NIL or Athletic Scholarship money to offer, they are still having to sell kids on whatever benefits their school and program have beyond $, which is best done in person and on the recruiting trail.

Anyways- just thought it was interesting to hear a perspective from a couple coaches who arent navigating recruiting in the age of paying players in various ways.

The price of five guys made this a very good analogy. Well played

I take back the quote from Mark Twain. You get it. This Perd guy/gal clearly does not.
I get it in principle. Head coaches jobs are easier / less stressful in the new climate, due to not having to go all over the damn place to recruit. Duh. I simply took exception to his choice of words.

You didn’t simply do anything. You took the time to compare building a basketball roster with ordering a ******* hamburger (although there is something very simple minded about that approach).

PSA: You are now on ignore, so I will not be reading your reply.

You’ve been pretty negative about all this from the beginning. It sounds as if you’ve doubled down. If a coach says crootin is more streamlined, I believe him. There’s no incentive for him to say that.

Now, what he means is, it’s streamlined for programs who have enough money. And that’s true.

This is not going to sit well in the White House***

Just what we need when popularity of the major college sports is on the rise - get the ******* government involved.

There does need to be regulation. Right now it’s unrestrained capitalism which leads to monopolies.

You just can’t see past the present day.
