Yeah that about sums it up. But I do think it’s important for Arkansas fans to understand that the fanbase was completely justified in turning against him. It wasn’t just that he had spent the last 5 years losing games he had no business losing, it was the manner in which he lost them. Refusing to play statistically productive player combinations. Being intentionally vague about injuries and player drama. Bristling when questioned about anything, as if his previous accomplishments made him above reproach. They may have at a lesser program, but at Kentucky (and any other blue blood, be it basketball or football) it’s always going to be what have you done for me lately. That’s just the way it is, and Cal knew that going in. The fans loved Cal, and would have afforded him a lot more grace had he chosen to try a different approach rather than double down on what had already been failing for some time.
Cal has done OK at Arkansas, and will probably continue to do OK there. He may even reach an FF at some point, though I do believe it will require some changes that I don’t necessarily think he is crazy about making. His career has proven that he needs massive talent AND a great staff to succeed, and right now I feel like he has good talent and a crappy staff. The man has always been an elite recruiter, but one need only look at his coaching tree to see how deficient he is in the X’s and O’s department. So again, not saying he won’t bring Ark to places they haven’t been in 30+ years… but I would be surprised. He’s just too old and stubborn, IMO.
