And to me, the odds are very low that he is going to choose us, so a 4/7 deadline is what Pope should do here, or just pull the offer.

His offer from UK is reportedly $2m higher than anyone else. The fact he's still thinking about it, tells us all we need to know, move on.
If KY is the program everyone thinks it is, should KY be setting the deadlines and not the player ... after being reasonable, of course ??

Exactly.
Pope has been more than reasonable here.
Now, it is possible that Mo Williams has taken over this recruitment. If that's the case, well, that changes things.
It’s a gamble either way, hopefully Pope and Mo pick the right gamble to take.

Man it feels like we are gonna get played again, give me a portal player that is hungry over this crap any day.

Stokes comes in and gets exposed because - he can't dunk on everyone because - it's not high school. Then fakes an injury and hopes the pros take him on "potential." I have seen this movie before.
And we pay 3-7 million to watch a rerun.

No thanks

If Pope puts a team together full of transfers from small schools, it’s going to be a rough year. As far as support and the product on the floor. We can agree to disagree.
Anyone that says this is labeled as a bad fan and troll on this board. Most of us seen the direction of the program and wont sit and watch the garbage without calling it garbage. Mark will have to turn **** into Lucky Charms this off season and most of us can see that we are gonna have to swallow this **** soup another season. I agree with you and hope Im wrong and Mark hits it out the park this summer but we all know were this is headed.

I’m 50/50 on this.

On one hand, we need elite talent and this kid is elite. It makes sense to wait.

On the other hand, this is starting to look like yet another Wilson or Ament where we end up being the bridesmaid once again.

My gut reaction is similar to OP’s, but I guess with a talent like Stokes, you have to take the gamble that he picks us. I will be shocked if he’s in a Kentucky uniform next season.
This is where I'm at also. I would probably give Pope credit for having the balls to back away and leave Stokes to deal with the Nike / Adidas thing and the fact he left however many millions on the table, but the best way is to probably just keep the offer there and recruit the portal like you lost him. Even be transparent and say "we appreciate you letting us recruit you, but we are going to operate as if you have turned us down. No hard feelings." If a stud becomes available in the portal go get him.

Michigan: 5 of their top 6 players are transfers.
Illinois: only 2 RSCI top 100 players (#23 & #57) and 3 transfer players.
UConn: 3 transfers and 1 top 10 kid.

The team that had all the high end NBA star power, is sitting at home. It can be done and it actually is done more often than not.

Michigan has a lottery pick and a coach with Final Four experience. We do not. UConn has the best coach in the game, we do not. Mark Pope is what he is until he's not. An average coach thats going to have another double digit loss season next year. Tyran Stokes can help mask some of that in ways small school transfers cannot. Same thing as Calipari, except Pope can't recruit as well.

That lottery pick, is a guy that was a transfer, you didn't mention that.
And you're right, Mark Pope is not Dusty May, but that doesn't mean he has to have a lottery pick to get to a FF.
Last years team had FF potential until Robinson and Butler went down. Change out Andrew Carr for a transfer, like Yaxel and it most certainly is a FF roster.
But here's the thing with these blue chip kids these days, too many of them opt out now. It’s what Peterson was doing, Sharpe did it and so did JQ. I'd rather find a Yaxel, than beg Stokes. Stokes has opt-out written all over him.

Why didn't Yaxel come here

What potential problems?
This kid and his handlers are stringing along major universities’ athletic programs for money and demands.
Maybe he is a hard nosed player that leaves it all on the court for the name on the front of the jersey. Maybe he’ll make sacrifices for the good of the team and take instruction from the coaching staff. Maybe Stokes will become a legend in Kentucky basketball history for his unselfish play as he leads us to a title.
Or, maybe he’s an entitled player that has been told how great he is all his life and has an inflated sense of importance and skill?
Peterson at Kansas has been a story all year and Stokes has a worse attitude than him.
These are the HS players that should be allowed to go directly to the NBA. They have no interest in playing college ball.

This!! Spot on. Waiting for a guy that we all 95% is going to Kansas is costing us getting somebody else that wants to be here. With one recruit signed for next year we need to hit the portal hard and get some of the best available players before other teams do. Cut this guy loose.
Actually Mark Pope is costing us elite recruits! He has absolutely zero 5 star nba players. Pathetic. Kids don’t trust pope, not even at Kentucky.

Jeff, you and I agree on about 98 percent of all things Kentucky basketball. But I do not see a light at the end of the Pope tunnel and you seem to be pretty firm in your stance that he’s the guy.

I fully accept he’s gonna coach Kentucky next year and I hope we win every game. But I refuse to get my hopes up that next year will be any better than this one, and most of the evidence from Popes coaching career is backing me on that.

Why would he be desperate? Just recruit good enough players in the portal. Stokes could be great or he could be a head case. Some players pan out like cousins, others end up being kicked off the team like Rashad carruth..
If we get him great if we don't get some good players in the portal. Dusty did good this year with the portal, last year we did better. I'm on wait and see mode to see who we get in portal. The ones saying we are going to be crap without seeing the roster no little to nothing.
I don't know if he can recruit, when he probably isn't good at lying which most people do when signing kids. Some tell the truth about pt and other stuff but most I don't think are completely honest.
Pope ain't desperate. Several posters here are, though.

You gave no actual reason other than UK fans are bad. No surprise there
What reason do you want? I answered your question for you and gave you the exact answer you wanted to hear.

Yeah, sure, Pope lost a recruiting battle to Michigan, but how about you tell me why UConn and Kansas didn’t get Kobe Brea? They sure tried, who got him?

You think UK was the only one that wanted Butler, Carr, Oweh, Aberdeen, Mo D and Moreno?

It goes both ways.

One way is a player who is looking at a shot for a championship, the other way, well, is not

No sir, I've said it a million times and I'll say it again. I am absolutely not firm on Pope. He never should have been hired. Mitch is a huge f*ck up that should be run out of town. I'm only defending Pope, because I think a lot of the critisisms have gone too far. He's getting top rope type critisism thrown his way, like he went to the NIT the last 2 years. He's getting a 3rd year to prove himself and he's one of us. On top.of that, he wants the same things we want and he's working harder than we are to get them.

I'll say this, Pope showed me some things in year one and at times, this year, that tells me he can do this, IF he makes a lot of changes.

The ball is in his court. He gets a 3rd year to fix it and if he doesn't, I'll stand on the front of the FIRE POPE BOAT like I'm George Washington.

I think he lost this team in November. Something happened that caused a divide and they never bonded. It explains a lot of things that happened. He deserves some level of our respect.
