So, reading this thread, it sounds like Somto sucked for most of the year but looked like Hakeem Olajuwon against us. A familiar theme.
Yep, and next year with him and Mo together on the floor their average would be 11pts., 10rebs., 3 steals and 3 blocks along with 4 fouls, 46% from 2, 31% from 3 and 60% from the line. (In big games numbers will fluctuate, usually worse)

I read the article about how UCONN coach, Hurley re-built his team after last year. The guy is a prick but the article was interesting how UCONN went into the portal looking for guys who had fight in them and would fit in what he wanted. Not always the popular pick in the portal but who seemed to fit their needs at that position best.

They took a guard from Georgia that was OK, nothing to write home about but goes to UCONN and turns into a key piece form them.
Each piece has to complement each other. We did not seem to have that this year.

But I am with you on wanting a beast in the middle.

Nothing more satisfying as a coach, when you make a kid and team better. Hurley can coach 🤬

He can take a beast, and make him a smart beast.

He’ll prolly go to Arkansas with those 5 stars and enjoy a nice round of 32 appearance before moving on.

The only move I saw from JQ was sitting on the bench and occasionally standing during a time out.
Yeah he really wore those warm ups out this season. He walked in the huddles amazingly well too. NBA quality as far as bench guys who witness the coaches huddle from the outside.

Didn’t Pope go to his house for a surprise, impromptu dinner and the guy choose UConn the next day?

Word was…….Pope either forgot to flush the toilet or completely plugged up the sewage line .

Pope has to change his entire system. The reason I say that is because he’s an offensive coach but in the win in the SEC you have to be a strong defensive team. The league is physical. It’s tough and next year I mean Florida’s got everybody coming back so you wanna win SEC? You gotta beat Florida if you get the formula beat Florida you beat everybody but the first step beating in Florida is having guys that match up that can defend. And it’s gotta be like some 6’10” types or 6 foot eight with long arms. You know guys that can move set. Screens can hit shots. I see Arizona, Michigan, Duke, Florida UCONN they all have the same type of team big they can move and defend. If pope doesn’t know whether a guy can play defense, but puts up a lot of numbers or a guy that’s strong on defense that’s terrible shooter. You always get always have to go with the offensive player the guy with the offensive skill and then send them through defensive boot camp this summer send them all through defensive Boot Camp this summer but when you pick those guys, you gotta make sure that they can play man. It can’t be some skinny dude that can’t hold his ground but can nail threes. So Pop’s got his work cut out for him. That’s all there is to it.
Florida has everyone back? They’re losing everybody that mattered basically. Chinyelu, Condon and Hough will be gone. Next year will show if Golden just caught lightning in a bottle with a special team or if he’s legit since the last part of the title team is gone.

Haugh is probably gone since most analysts have him as a lottery pick. I see a lot of second round grades for Condon and Chinyelu, so unfortunately for us, I’m not too confident at the moment that they won’t come back. They’re the exact type of player who’s been staying in college longer once NIL and revenue sharing came into play.

Just FYI:

Pope targeted Demary from Georgia as his top PG option. For whatever reason, their personalities clashed, so it didn't work out.

To those not wanting Somto, I’ll bet any of you Pope doesn’t sign a better player! He makes Moreno look and play like a small child.

I’m honestly not all that impressed with him. The shot blocking is elite, but it’s pretty much the only thing he does well.

I see a lot of posts assuming he’s a monster rebounder to go with that, but he’s not. This past season, he got 12.2% of available offensive rebounds and 15.1% of defensive rebounds when he was on the floor. For comparison Moreno was at 12.2/18.9% and Garrison at 10.3/17.4% in those same categories.

Once you factor in that he has no offense besides dunks, can’t hit free throws, and has twice as many turnovers as assists, I don’t actually think he moves the needle for us very much.
There's a good deal of negative polarization regarding all things Pope and this team in particular.

I reckon 90%+ of all college basketball games watched by UK fans are actually UK games. There isn't enough time in the day to watch 30+ Georgia games. We remember all the games Moreno made bad plays or played poorly. Cyril, in the mind of an average UK fan, is the game against UK and his box score stats. Those box score stats include good games and bad games. However, we didn't actually see any of Cyril's bad games.

Yep that's exactly as it went. That scenario perfectly explains our recruiting struggles.

Love to have an enforcer inside but only if he is the only non-shooter on the floor. Sick af of only having two or three scoring options.
I feel the same. Don't think were going to get a AA at the 5 in the portal. I'll take shot blocker , rebounds and put backs at the 5 and then have shooters all around him.

Pope should use the season 1 formula in my opinion and get a bunch of guys who can shoot and then add a more defensive minded 5 & a PG like Butler.

Does anyone think pope will go after this guy?
He would be fine with a team full of scorers, but uk doesn't have that
