I might be the oldest guy on SPS. I am bucket list traveling in April on a train trip from Portland to Chicago. Four more states and a trip to Wrigley Field are the goal. That will make 48 states. I did the Master’s and the Ryder Cup last year. What does the Pack think about the ultimate Bucket List goals? Where are you going or doing?
Nail Sydney Sweeney. I've done just about everything else.

Catch and land a 100+lb tarpon from the beach.
may i ask if you’ve landed a tarpon of any size off the beach before? I’ve caught tarpon but all from a boat. The summer of Covid I was hell bent on catching a snook from the beach. Finally got it done after a lot of trial and error (mostly error). Can’t imagine trying to land a tarpon from the beach much less one that size. But I’m sure theres plenty of people out there that have pulled it off.

I'm 40 and have some work to do.
Mainly on learning how to pick a fan base. What the 17 is wrong with you. I guess the Cubs had a good run starting when you were 30ish? But unless you didn't become a baseball fan until then, I can only assume you picked them, the Detroit Lions, and Mississippi state fandoms to fill your time when you aren't repeatedly punching yourself in the dick for fun? I thought I didn't understand what in the hell is going on in Christy Noem's husbands head, but your choice of fandom makes his choice in recreational activities look positively normal.

ETA: You cheered for two 17ing teams where Crooms was in charge of the offense? You sick, sick, masochist 17

Go to all 63 national parks. (64 if you're one of those folks that include the Natchez Trace.**) I've already hit several that aren't so easy to get to - like the 2 in Hawaii, the 4 in south Florida / Virgin Islands as well as some of the most famous like Yellowstone, Sequoia and Yosemite. The one in Samoa and 8 in Alaska will likely have to wait until I retire.
When you do Alaska, travel by rail as much as possible. While the national parks are great, the rest of Alaska is just as good and you will see far more by rail than car or plane.

I was fortunate enough to see most of western Europe as a kid. Two years ago I went fishing in Alaska. Last year a Nile cruse in Egypt. I also checked off Wrigley. A few years back I got a boner in Islamorada. Not much left in the states I have left that I can do.

I was supposed to be in Greece right now but a blown up knee canceled that trip. Vietnam and Cambodia this fall on a river cruse. Looking at a Great Migration safari for next year.

This is really good advice. I’ve done almost all of the Alaska Railroad, Fairbanks to Seward. It’s spectacular. Make sure you split it up a bit so you can do it all during the day. You wouldn’t want to miss any of the scenery, especially Anchorage to Seward. Rail travel itself is fine as long as you are aren't sleeping on the train.

Yes, I've landed several small ones. Nothing that requires 2 hands to hold up. I've hooked 3 that would have pushed 75+ lbs, but never landed them.

I've caught a 41" snook from the beach a few years ago.

I was planning to travel mostly by plane when going to the Alaska NP's just for the sake of time. But I guess we could do a combination of the two. But what exactly is bad about sleeping on a train?

Well hen you are sleeping you are missing the views. That's the big thing. Some people just can't sleep while a train is moving too.

I just don’t like it, and we had it pretty good the only time I’ve ever done it, private cabin on the Canadian from Vancouver to Jasper. I don’t think that you have that option Alaska, except in a seat. You Don’t want to do any of that line at night though, trust me, it’s spectacular. We did it in three legs, Fairbanks to Denali, Denali to Anchorage, and Anchorage to Seward.

- Get Scuba certifications and start diving in exotic tropical paradise locales (doing the certs this summer or fall, depending on my job situation)
- Do America's Great Loop (already started boat shopping)
- Hike the Appalachian Trail (if Nimblewill Nomad can do it at 83, I can do it 50- or 60-something)

Just a few months ago a dude finished it at my neighborhood boat ramp, where he started. In a 16ft jon boat.

We are past 70 now and have already knocked out a lot of our bucket list stuff, but we still want to see the northern lights and are considering a trip to Iceland. Most of my stuff centered around various hunting trips and I have accomplished all of my goals, except for a Dall Sheep. I have a couple more trips booked for the future and will probably continue to make hunts for as long as it’s physically possible, but I am way too old for the sheep hunt.

As a huge fan of the movie Lonesome Dove, I always wanted to go on a real cattle drive. There are places that you can still do that but I don’t think my knees and hips could handle that much time on a horse anymore. So unfortunately I think I will give up on that one and just continue to watch the movie a couple of times a year.

One of my simpler goals that might give some of you older TV western fans a laugh was to go to Dodge City, KS. And drink a beer in the Long branch Saloon. Got to check that one off about 3 years ago.
You’re not too old for a Dall. Do it!

My state list only lacks Montana and Nevada. I plan to do those soon before I get in worst shape physically.

I don’t have a formal list but there are things I’d like to do when I retire for good…
Travel more often
A. If I have a Bucket List destination, I’d like to pay my respects to Ernest Shackleton at his grave in South Georgia… Generally that also means going to Antarctica…
B. Explore Europe more in depth. Spend weeks in different countries…
C. Visit Asia, Australia, Africa, and Central and South America…
D. Go on one of those music cruises or travel experiences… Heck, see shows in all 50 states…

Train trip from Chicago to the Northwest has always been on my buckets. I use to travel from Jackson to Chicago numerous times a year for Business. A couple a times a year, I would book the Sleeper Car on the City of New Orleans for the overnight trip.
