Fran had a lot of positive qualities. Too many don't appreciate how he truly embraced and highlighted the legacy of CMS40. Alford never did, and Lick was too busy holding his head in his hands. BTW, when Lick was doing that in year one, I kind of wondered if maybe he wasn't as good as hire as we'd been led to believe

Fran was passionate about the game, and he backed his players 100%. He certainly had shortcomings, but if you stack him up against our other coaches going back to Ralph Miller era to present, he does okay. Not the best, not the worst, and his character, tantrums aside, can't really be questioned.

I think Fran is a good person, I also think Patrick is a good person... Fran did embrace the Chris Street legacy and it was really cool to see some of them game reunions. He also did a lot of good with cancer fundraising. His problem was his arrogance (Not as bad as Alford), which can probably be attributed to being an East coast guy and he had a lot of his jerkiness with the media when he was asked fair questions. He had his players backs almost to a fault and I also think that he was always thought he was the smartest guy in every room he entered and talked down or was condescending to people that he didn't feel was on his IQ level. I also feel that his wife was as much the HC as he was, when his boys were on the team... They would have been much further ahead to play for other programs.

He gave us some good years and brought us out of the dark gloomy Lickliter days. It was time to move on and hopefully as the years pass he will realize that and appreciate his time being at Iowa.

Good post. I think we all appreciate that Fran brought us out of the dark years. We had dominant players like Garza and Murray (among others) and yet we never did much in the tourney. Defense was obviously bad almost every year. Fan apathy crept in and it was time for a change.
