I don't see Ono leaving Penn State.

One of the interesting things that people don't think about though is that all international athletes are on F-1 visas. That means that they cannot receive NIL or Rev Share without losing their visa. The only pay that they can receive is for internships within their potential career field...and even that comes with a ton of restrictions and oversight.

I can tell you with 100%, verifiable confidence that the NCAA is aware of it. They send out communication annually to every NCAA athletic department about it.

It's not worth going through all of the various restrictions, but there are basically only 2 types of visas that international NCAA student athletes would qualify for (F-1, J-1). About the only work allowed for either is an on-campus job (up to 20 hrs, and heavily restricted on what qualifies as a "job") or for an internship (up to 40 hours per week and a ton of additional paperwork). Neither can receive NIL payments or revenue share without losing their visas. Those payments are considered unauthorized compensation and any attempts to pay them will get both the student athlete and the school in hot water. Failure to comply could see the school lose the ability to sponsor international students for like 5 years...and international students are a university cash cow so they're not going to risk that.

Apparently you didn’t watch the Iowa-Illinois elite eight game. They said Illinois has a specific person on staff in charge of foreign players and figuring out how to make things work. I’m quite certain they didn’t come here after military service and playing pro basketball at home for the education.

I didn't actually. I basically only follow Iowa wrestling.

I would definitely like to learn more about what exactly that person is doing to keep things above board. Do you happen to remember the guy's name or staff position title? About the only thing I could think of to keep it above board is work to identify potential NIL opportunities inside of that athlete's home country. There aren't really waivers or anything as it relates to student visa holders and no collegiate athlete can qualify for a P-1 visa while competing at the NCAA level.

Honestly I’m not really sure where I saw it but I thought it made a lot of sense if there’s a way to make it work. Not to make this about PSU but I assume Ono is getting something isn’t he? Maybe not?

Ono’s family is one of the largest soy sauce manufacturers in the world. Anything PSU could possibly pay him if they could - they can’t - would be like pocket change for the weekend for him.

When people have money like that, they are not making decisions on what they want to experience based on factors that are relevant to someone like you or me e.g. money.

For what it's worth, Soy Sauce is a GOOD thing!
