"Just one more lane will fix the traffic problem" - places that never fix traffic problems
I agree with the sentiment but Goodman needs more lanes. It's been ridiculous for 20 years.

We thought Church would eventually become the next Goodman and take a lot of that congestion but that hasn't materialized (yet).

The next big thing will be widening the north/south roads that feed 269. They're working on widening Craft road right now.

Star Landing was approved to be extended through OB by the County. That was going to be the next Goodman Rd. It was going to allow commercial traffic, and businesses not allowed on Church. OB ruined that with their hostile annex.

That's not the only thing OB acquired via hostile annex. They annexed my area a couple of years ago and all I got was double property tax and 40% higher car tags.

Drebin,

Looks like the plan is widen craft to 4 lanes to make a path for the trucks to warehouses. But what they need to do is widen 305. But that would involve buying a lot of houses and property.

To often we have trucks on 305 trying to get the warehouses at 305/78 and hacks and 302. There really needs to be some major infrastructure adjustments or new roads built to solve these issues on 305.

Widening roads continuously only makes issues worse. And I have to give Goat credit where it’s due - he’s correct about intersections. Goodman road is a problem because you stop ever 15 feet for the next signal. It’s a beast for a number of reasons, but widening it won’t fix the issue.

The more you widen roads, the harder it is to get out from side roads, which means more intersections “meet” signal warrants, and then a signal goes in. Which increases mainline delay, which prompts the next round of widening. It is a cycle with no end.

The answer is smart sized roads, better grid roadway networks, turn lanes where needed, less dependence on 2-3 roads only, less signals, better access management, more roundabouts.

edited to add: you can absolutely boulevard roads when mainline volumes actually warrant the need and be smart about managing access. The older style five lanes are a big problem.

What saves Church is the lack of businesses on it but it has gotten more used over the past 10 years. I hope that stays because that is my path generally. If you are trying to use it between 4:30 - 5:30 it is pretty bad. I shouldn't post this but then Starlanding takes me home.

I don't know how many people have to be killed at Bethel/305 before they fix it. And there's a zoning meeting coming up to rezone much of the area along the eastern side of 305 north of 269 as commercial.

The I55 section in that area is also going to get a lane added. Only 15 years or so too late though. Same issue with the interstate at Gluckstadt

Seriously. I hate that section. Needs to be 3 lanes each way at least up to the Nissan plant, and really up to just past the Canton exit. Fortunately, I take the Madison exit and rarely take the interstate to or from Gluckstadt when I do go up that way.

If I remember correctly adding lanes does very little to none to alleviate traffic congestion. Maybe some of the CEs on here (especially the ones who have done the Northwestern Traffic Institute) can chime in. But I remember my dad, a CE, talking about this. And speed bumps increasing speed between bumps rather than slowing traffic down.

The sitting on our hands and not widening 55 in De Soto county is almost criminal. The amount of accidents between Hernando and Southhaven each day is insane.
Just to give you some inside baseball, my group was asked over 10 years ago to put together an estimate to relocate the transmission line for the interstate widening. We literally just finished that small portion last year. It took MDOT that long and they still haven't moved a load of dirt for the actual widening

I've heard this for years and it's bullsh*t. If you spread 100,000 cars per day over 2 lanes, it's going to be less congested than if you only have 1 lane. Now sure, when it grows to 200,000 cars per day, it'll be just as congested as it was, but much LESS congested than it would have been if you hadn't added a lane.

I wouldn’t doubt it.

There’s a guy up here that owns some land we farm that is part of group the lobbying for it to get done. I asked him several years ago how long he thought it would take to get it widened to Hernando. 25 years.

Right. If it were that simple. It's not. That's the point. It just fills up however many lanes you build. I'm not nearly educated enough to know the details and how long etc. this takes. That's why I said maybe a traffic CE could enlighten us.

They announced a roundabout at that intersection. Not sure when it will happen. I’ve heard from a few people that a roundabout will cause them to find another way to travel. If enough people think like this it will improve by process of elimination.

Sorry, but it really is. I've experienced it first-hand many times. I can buy that it's not a 50% reduction in congestion if you double the lanes. But it is a very significant reduction.

I don't mind roundabouts. But I think a 6-lane one would be pretty unworkable.
The wife and I took a trip to Aruba last year. They love roundabouts. There are a few 2 laners and those took a little getting used to. Any more than that would be pretty stressful and not helpful

The number lanes will not ultimately reduce congestion if there are lights every quarter mile.

Multiple lane traffic circles work if people know what lane they need to be in based on what direction they want to exit the circle. If you have driven in Europe you know what I mean. You can forget anyone in MS willing to learn the proper rules to make it work. One advantage of a traffic circle is they can limit the amount of tractor trailer traffic on a road.

There is a round about at the hwy 72 and hwy 7 in Benton county. Other than the coast it’s the only round about I can recall seeing in MS. It’s not bad IMO. Keeps people from pulling out in front of you and causing bad wrecks.

There are several in the Jackson area. Including a 2-lane one in Ridgeland. People are used to them by now, and they all seem to work smoothly.

Most people that are claiming more lanes doesn't reduce congestion are making a claim around "induced demand". Basically, when a new lane is opened, there is an immediate short term response where people that avoided that road by driving side roads or just foregoing unnecessary trips completely start driving the road now that traffic isn't as bad, so the road feels just as congested even though there is much more throughput. in the medium and longer term, better access to a desirable place means new residences, whether multifamily or single family, will be constructed to take advantage of the access provided and roads will end up just as congested if not more congested as density will in some respects create its own demand also.

You will often see people making this claim completely ignore the benefit that 20% more drivers are using the road simply because the congestion stays the same.
