He intentionally made contact with the crown of his head. It's absolutely a T.

Change the rules of the game for different times of the game? I never agree with that. He intentionally contacted a ref to intimidate. What's next? A light headbutt is ok as long as it's a one possession game and within ten seconds remaining? If so, put it in the rules. And the refs would not have changed the outcome of the game. D*ckhead Danny would have changed the outcome. The refs would enforce the behavior which is what they are paid to do.

stuff is called different at different times of the game, different situations of the game, and different stakes of a game. welcome to the real world...

and did you hear Karaban's interview where he said something to the effect of "that ref was different than the other two. you can talk to him. coach and him have a great relationship"

hurley knew that was in good fun and so did the ref...it's a non story

Perfect, refs send the message that physical contact with a ref can be acceptable but only at certain times of the game. Maybe loose cannon Hurley escalates to a light to moderate head butt next time on him. But it's ok as they are friendly. Which in itself is a conflict of interest and could skew calls such as this. What if the Duke coach walked up and did a forehead rub at that same time or even a player. OK or not OK? And no skin off my back by the way as the no call actually helped me. I won a small bet for UConn to win straight up.

If it happens with 8 minutes to go he’s getting a T.

No official in the world is going to do it in that moment.

Ayres was in a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. By not calling it, he's saying it's ok to make physical contact with a ref. If he did call it, he would be deciding which team goes to the Final Four. But after what he did to us at Ohio State a few years ago, I don't feel sorry for him.

if you call a tech there the entire building and everyone on TV better know exactly why in the instant you blow your whistle...

you don't call one because a bench guy put two feet on the court for a half a second or whatever the hell this is above...

it's one of the biggest shots in the history of the tournament and the players have fully decided the outcome don't make it about yourself as a ref.
if it’s a tech with 10 min left - it’s a tech with 1 second left. it’s absolutely a tech.

3 Final 4's in 4 years, back to back championships

His players love him, his fans love him, the coaching fraternity respects the hell out of him.

Remarkable coaching job yesterday.

Read his latest book, he pulls no punches on himself.

I sure do wish he was coaching the Scarlet Knights
Same here. Years ago when Danny was a young assistant at RU under Bannon (1997-01)I met him at a RU golf outing. He recently had graduated after playing at SHU and beginning his coaching career.

He was very young, well spoken and said that he was “very happy with the opportunity” to coach at RU. As an RU fan that pleased me to hear him express that and I hoped that RU would continue to have him on the staff. The Hurleys were already a legendary BB family in NJ at that time and RU could have benefitted from a good relationship with them.

But Bannon earned the scorn of AD Bob Mulcahy by showing up late to practices, among other incidents, and by canning Bannon and his staff RU ended up tossing Danny Hurley as well.

RU BB had Danny Hurley on staff for four years on the Banks but couldnt manage to build a relationship with him. It makes me shake my head to this day that we blew this opportunity with the Hurley family.

Most coaches would get a technical for that. That ref let him slide so maybe there was some nonverbal caveman communication which explains the weird exchange.

Glad they didn’t call it as that would have bailed Duke out when UConn earned the comeback.

The Hurley family's relationship with Rutgers pre-dates Dan's Rutgers coaching tenure.

"Seton Hall and Rutgers were among the best Division 1 programs that recruited me. I wanted to attend Rutgers, partly because there wouldn't be as much pressure. It was the Atlantic 10 Conference, not the Big East. It seemed less intense than other places. My parents and everyone in my basketball life, however, were dead set against it. When I came back from my Rutgers visit, they told me how it was going to be." - Dan Hurley

like saying every time you put two hands on a guy it's a foul...sure it's a rule but it's just not enforced.

listen to Hurley with the PMT guys...this is such a non story and just people getting mad for no reason.

Two hands on a player during a game is so much different than initiating contact head to head contact with an official.

The pretzel logic here about why head to head contact with a ref this should not been called is pretty funny.

He's a good guy....

He's a multi championship level winning coach...

He could have been the HC at RU...

It's the end of the game....

He's friendly with the ref....

He's a great competitor....

All of you are jealous of Hurley....

It was all in good fun.....

Contact with a ref in pretty much any sport at any time in any game and at any level is pretty much a T or similar in other sports or even an ejection.

But the ref publicly said it was nothing

why are we still talking about it… everyone’s talking about this and not about Duke having an absolutely epic collapse two years in a row

We're talking about is because its and interesting and controversial topic for discussion bridging to the next round. Also, there is an entire Coaching Malpractice thread on Duke if you want to discuss the topic of Duke's collapse.

And of course this wasn't a T...Ayers was leaning in trying to talk to him (in an obviously very loud environment). Looks completely awkward on the replay, but Ayers didn't even know what they were talking about when Seth Greenberg asked him about it after the fact.

Maybe he's friendly with him.
I hope folks posting in this thread heard the comments made during last night's 1st Crown game. The announcers said folks coming out to get all worked up don't know the friendly relationship Hurley has with this ref. Seemed to make it sound like a man crush thing between them and said it was in no way deserving of a T. It was more affectionate than in anger.
