Sports spending without proper oversight may be very common in the college world.

A Rutgers University graduate has filed a class action lawsuit against his alma mater alleging that the school’s athletic department “has squandered tens of millions in taxpayer funding” through “wasteful spending, lack of oversight, and other gross negligence” and has “harmed New Jersey taxpayers“ while racking up a half-billion dollar deficit over the past decade.

This was only a matter of time. I didn't read any of the links, but in general, the claimant would be better off focusing on the burden the university places on enrolled students more than the taxpayer at large. New Jersey taxpayers who choose not to do business with Rutgers really don't feel much of that, but enrolled students -- the majority of which could not care less about any of that -- are the ones being put heavily upon in student fees and other hidden charges meant to offset the profligate and wasteful spending of Rutgers football. It holds no interest to them and yields them absolutely no benefit.

Not sure foolish government spending is actionable. If it was the lawsuits would be beyond counting.

We have no idea how are tax dollars are being spent.

Yes, but it is not just taxpayers. Alums donate and want their donations well spent too! Just like Seton Hall alums!

But we do know that what the average state taxpayer pays toward Rutgers athletics is pennies per year. I've seen the figure, but it was a few years ago, and not updated. Trust me, it's nothing to be upset about. You're not the one having your pocket picked for that.

They are either directing their philanthropy to Rutgers Athletics, something else at Rutgers, or to an unrestricted fund. If it's the first, they are likely glad. If it's the second thing, their donation cannot be used to fund athletics. And if it's the third, they are consenting for Rutgers to do with their gift as they will.
