I've gotten to know both families. Ava's parents are a little more laid back with regards to her basketball. They moved here to be able to have fun going to her games, but more so, they came because Ava's an old soul and a homebody and she just likes having her family around. Ava prioritizes her academics just as much as her basketball career, and even coming in to college it wasn't necessarily a goal of hers to make a career out of basketball after college. Her parents aren't going to push her into making basketball her life if that's not what she ultimately wants.

Addie's parents are more basketball focused and hands-on, with more of a mindset that a career in basketball was the goal, and they moved with her to help her achieve that as much as they could.

Thats cool! I have only met the Heiden's and they were really great. I can totally see all the things you have said.

Good Lord, get off my A--! Big Z said "we played GREAT down the stretch" Thats what I responded to. We did NOT play great down the stretch, by any metrics. "Down the stretch is basically the way you end the season. We played in the B1G champ and got absolutely woodshedded. I'm NOT sure how you can just gloss that over. I know very well UCLA has more talent, but a quality team doesn't lose by 50+ points to anyone. To me this was even worse given the public statements made by Jan and Ava, that we had "plans" for how to attack them after getting drubbed out in Cali. (Not even sure why would have given Close that bulliten board material either). We also didn't play well in either tourney game at home.

How you finish is what gets carried into the off season.
The mental state of the program has to be a huge concern for the entire team...and fans.
There's a lot to try and fix.
Hopefully, JJ has some kind of plan. Any plan.

Deal is the most overrated five-star recruit I’ve seen. Either Jan is missing badly on talent evaluation, or there are serious issues within the staff that need to be addressed. She missed on three players—Rodriguez, Hays, and Deal—and that raises real concerns. At this point, I don’t have confidence in her ability to land wins through the portal or recruiting. The results just haven’t been there. I know this will upset those who defend her, but it needs to be said. Her recruiting and player development have been disappointing (specifically with guards).

Bluder was head coach during the major recruitment of Deal and Hays and Jan was the lead recruiter of Clark.
OK, but while recruiting is obviously important, would you have expected the meltdown Iowa had at the end of the year if LB was calling the shots?
Or the multiple games all season where the team looked lost to start several games or after halftime.
The Minnesota game was so strange...dominated early and then GOT dominated in 2nd half.

Several games all season where Ava just got silly fouls and took herself out of games.

It happens...even happened to Lisa over her last three years.

If you are melting down tossing blame all over the place...it will give you practice for next year...and the next year...and the next year...this isn't going away in this climate...to put it in a timeframe...ever.

Lisa made two sweet 16s in 20 years before CC. I love Lisa and think she was a great coach, but I’m not at all convinced she would have had more success than Jan with this exact roster.

How is Hays a miss? She’s a freshman.

Why not??

It is one thing to lose when a great fan plan is put forth, there is energy and effort, good execution and you fall short.

it is another thing when the team looks confused, overwhelmed, and they all off the floor and the fans say what was that?
Everyone wants to blame the loss of McCabe for some of the horrible losses.
But Iowa won eight games in a row after the disastrous west coast trip and the azz kicking from Minnesota.

Then...the last three games debacle.
Why was McCabe the only legitimate outside threat coming into the season???

Not unreasonable to believe your 5-star 3pt. Shooting threat could provide some. And your two portal players have a 3pt.shot., and Mallegni has been nails (in practice). Seems like enough going in, but then 3 of those 4 players all sort-of whiffed the assignment in three different ways. So it ended up a worst case scenario for shooting.

*Thankfully, Stremlow picked up a lot of the slack. Her 3s in the Michigan game(2) were huge buckets. Unfortunately that well ran dry to end the season. Her game winner vs. Virginia was so close to getting them through the pressure they couldn't shake.

Has time to develop, but physically speaking, Iowa can't play a fast paced game when she's on the floor.
Started the season playing pretty well and than things just ground to a halt.

Jensen obviously had no confidence in her.

I didn't realize you talked to Jan on that level.

You projecting what you think on others is just dumb and is meaningless.

You ever watch any games???
Serious question.

In the debacle against Virginia, she literally got yanked from the game after about 45 seconds and never left the bench after.
A traveling call and a blown defensive effort...GONE.
Please watch an Iowa game before commenting.

TIA

I have been watching any game I could find since before Michelle Edwards.

By your reasoning Monica had no future after her freshman year.

Not body shaming, but Hays does not move well(think Crooks level mobility), is a terrible free throw shooter, and didn't play against the greatest competition in high school.
Mentioning Monica as some comparison is laughable.
Hopefully, Layla can contribute in a few years.
I suspect she's not making much $$$.

Or was your post an early April Fool's joke?

Monica's freshman year: 2 ppg/ 1rpg
Layla's freshman year: 4 ppg/ 2.5 rpg

Not saying Layla will have the same jump as Monica did in her Sophomore season but it's a pretty good comparison. Both came from small schools, both sat behind All American level Centers their first year, and both struggled to adapt to the speed of the game in their limited minutes

Love the optimism, so I guess we'll see.
The only difference going forward is JJ is the current CEO and likely won't do as much of the speciality coaching with the bigs.

You love optimism?

Why not find some yourself.

Judging a players future based on limited minutes in their freshman year is as stupid as you can get.

We can go on for ever with examples of how that way of thinking is futile.

How much did Lohaus do his freshman, sophomore, and junior year?

Wasn't the same group of offensive lineman that was considered the best in the country last year trashed repeatedly on message boards in proceeding years?

Some of you are so incredibly soft. We go 27-7 you meltdown. We lose some players in the portal like all teams will you meltdown.

We will have our turn in the portal soon enough. Toughen up Salllys.
Yes we will. We only need 6 or 7 players better than what we had. We got 1 HS recriut. I portal player came with assistant coach last year, 1 a complete wash out. Sally may have cause for concern.

This thread gets more depressing by the hour.
Can Beth talk Bluder out of retirement?

I mean, it's not Iowa State level depressing, but coming off a 27 win season, it just feels like things are spiraling downward.
Nothing is spiraling, you are just a moron and a Debbie downer. If you want a serious discussion we can.

Answer me this - did WBB outperform expectations to begin the season. The answer is obviously yes. That means Jan is doing something right. We have the core coming back, MW and can supplement with the portal. Yes we had a bad loss in the tournament, so what. Losing Deal in the big picture Is not a big deal.

That you are having a meltdown, you may need to get some professional help.

I agree with everything other than losing Deal sucks.

She will be a star for someone else.

I think she can be a good player. Court awareness and good shot. Poor handles, slow, low on quickness scale. She will never be the pg she wants to be. 2ng guard or SF yes. It can suck but we will get a better player than her in the portal. Those funds can be used elsewhere now.
