Can We Please Slow Our Roll on the Curt Cignetti Comparisons or the Immediate Contract Renegotiation?

The #9 seed Hawks just had an incredible tournament run that defied expectations. Hawk fans are understandably ecstatic. But to compare what McCullum accomplished this year to Curt Cignetti's national title run...or for our lady athletic director to consider rewarding the first year coach with a Kirk Ferentzian lifetime contract because he barely made the dance but caught fire and won 3 games in 7 days is not rational thinking and bad business.

Cignetti is in a league of his own. The guy brought a perennial doormat from irrelevance to an undefeated season, a Big 10 title, and a national championship. It's the story of the century in college football. Something that will never happen again in our lifetimes.

McCollum, on the other hand, took over Fran's solid/middle of the pack Big 10 program, rode his senior transfer all-American point guard to a middle of the pack 10-10 finish in the Big 10 + a quick exit in the Big 10 tourney, and earned a #9 seed in the tournament for his body of work. Both Alford and McCaffery were equally capable of doing that, and both were ultimately run out of town. While it is prestigious to even make the NCAA tournament, we quickly forget the Hawks limped in as the 9th place team in the Big 10. Indiana finished one spot behind Iowa in the standings, and they were not even good enough to make the tournament at all.

Yes, the Hawkeyes caught fire when it mattered most, in the NCAA tournament. They are to be celebrated for that. Breaking curses and reaching new heights with a team less talented than most. But when you think of it, Iowa was able to reach the Elite 8 by pulling off just 1 upset. First they beat the #8 seed, a 24-11 Clemson team. According to the sports books, more people bet on Iowa than Clemson to win that game. They also had the opportunity to beat up on little brother Nebraska, whom they had already beat a few weeks prior and taken to overtime in the other game. The point spread was 1 point. Can't call that an "upset." They won another game they should have won. Not many #9 seeds ever get that kind of scheduling luck in the tourney.

Does pulling off a major upset against Florida single handedly negate the team's 10-10 finish with bad losses / no big wins during the regular season? To some extent, absolutely! It brought major attention to the university and will hopefully boost NIL donations in the offseason. But when reality sets in, the team still enters next season as the returning 9th place program who is losing the best point guard to play at the school in the past 35 years.

It's great to be pumped about the Hawks. I sure am. But we might want to see how next year plays out before doubling the guy's brand new salary (which doubled his last salary) and locking him in with a 10 year deal. His 1 year old contract already includes HUGE incentives for making a big NCAA tourney run, so he already cashed in with a bonus worth 5 years salary at the DII level that he was making in 2024.

In college hoops, NIL and elite talent are the name of the game. A roster without Stirtz next year is a MAJOR question mark. This Elite 8 roster, minus Stirtz, would have been a .500 team that would have been lucky to make the NIT.

Cignetti is in a league of his own. The guy brought a perennial doormat from irrelevance to an undefeated season capped off by a national championship. It's probably the story of the century in college football. Something that likely will never happen again in our lifetimes.

No on slowing the roll on an Immediate Contract Renegotiation, Ben is the real deal. His knowledge of the game and the philosophies he instills in his players guarantees a base level of success, and that was proven with this roster. Ben showed first hand that he can scheme for any team, and his policy on defense and its importance to the game confounded teams league's better than ours when we played, eg Iowa State, Michigan, Florida. All three of these teams should have run us out of the building, it took two of the three to have miracles in the final minute to pull away.

As for comparisons to Cig, the most common and prominent have come from the media, not the fans.

Offer the extension, Beth!

The fact you…likely deliberately….have misspelled his name on more than one occasion, and your misogyny towards Beth renders your entire post and point of view as worthless.

The man has won 4 D-2 national championships, and he won the Missouri Valley regular season, tournament, and a game in the NCAA tournament with Drake.

He took a team of mid-major and D-2 players to the Elite 8 his first year at Iowa. There was no “luck” involved. He can flat-out coach.

You are a humbug, as are your posts.

Ben already exceeded Alford and Fran’s coaching ceiling in YEAR ONE……at the end of the day, no one really cares about BT regular season or BT tourney records….it is what you do in March. (That’s why I prefer Iowa football over basketball)1774919515376.gif

Ben has coached all of five D1 NCAA Tournament games so far, and already has pulled 3 fairly solid upsets:

Drake (11) over Missouri (6)
Iowa (9) over Florida (1)
Iowa (9) over Nebraska (4)

Yeah. Sign me up for more of a coach whose teams seem to punch above their weight class in the postseason. Just imagine if the guy can get some players.

You can pump your own brakes if you want, but I want Ben locked up nice and tight as our coach. If it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out, but Ben has won at every stop he's been, and this year's tournament performance did nothing but solidify my faith in him. Don't let this guy slip away.
Did he "win" at Iowa or did he finish 9th in the conference, going 10-10, with bad losses to 3-17 Penn State and 4-16 Maryland? The Hawks were a #9 seed in the NCAA tournament because they went 5-9 in Quad 1 games with just 1 ranked win.

I guess it's a matter of perspective here but obviously recency bias makes the season look better than it was. The proof will be in the pudding in the offseason when we see how the guy recruits non-Drake players.

That's not the way this works. Iowa DID have Stirtz. Ben recruited him, and coached him. Take away any team's best players and they obviously will not succeed.
Was there another player nationally who was more valuable to their team than Iowa's all-American point guard who played 40 minutes per game where the offense was a game of hot potato to get the ball back to him every time he passed it to someone else?

Beating him with the regular season record, and then hand waving the first Elite 8 in nearly four decades as recency bias, is a top tier sh*tpost. I'll give him that.

Are you suggesting that an Elite 8 appearance is tainted because of those bad losses? Here's a news flash - their Elite 8 game showing is in the books no matter their B1G record.

And isn't it possible that in-game coaching and player development, that jelled at the right time, was instrumental in the most improbable of tourney runs?

In this current coaching climate pay the man what he's worth.

that’s not true. Fran won conference tournaments, had 2 national players of the year and finished in the upper echelon of the B1G multiple times. Ben’s team got hot at the right time and some luck was involved as well. Let’s see what happens next season after he loses his golden goose.

Yeah, I am not a fan of the Cignetti comparisons, but the bottom line is Ben McCollum is the perfect fit for Iowa basketball. There is literally no one better for the job that Iowa could realistically bring onboard. The guy has won at the highest level everywhere he has gone and has strong Iowa ties. And, as a TV analyst stated (I don’t recall who), the ‘25-‘26 Hawkeye roster will likely be McCollum’s least talented squad at Iowa.

And yet, they upset a #1 seed and reached the Elite Eight—a feat not seen at Iowa since the Reagan administration.

If you’re Beth Goetz, ya know—the “lady athletic director,” you lock McCollum up into a very long-term contract. Not just because of one tournament run, that would be silly, but because the guy’s volume of work speaks for itself.

In short, he’s as good as you’re ever going to get. Get it done.

Ben did this with HIS players, minus Koch who was the lone Fran holdover. This isn't 1987 where Tom Davis made an Elite 8 run with Lute and Raveling's players. Even if he doesn't get better than "Drake" players, he still made the tournament this year (against a Big 10 schedule) with that level of talent. Even if you want to call the E8 run a fluke, he still had to do enough in the regular season to even be in position to have that chance.

Yeah, there were a couple of bad losses in the regular season. No arguing that. But I'm not going to poo poo an Elite 8 run because the regular season maybe wasn't as dominant as it could have been. Ben's system and style of team clearly works in the postseason. He's proven that over and over. We're not talking about a 1-hit wonder, here (Steve Alford making the Sweet 16 at SWMS comes to mind). Four DII natties, 2nd round in one year with Drake on a team he built basically from scratch, and E8 in his first year at Iowa. The track record speaks for itself.

Stirtz is going to be a big hole to fill, no question, but he did have some help in this tournament. Do you really think Iowa gets past Florida and Nebraska this year without Alvaro, Sage and Koch? I sure don't.

I seem to recall Steve Alford reaching the Sweet 16 at a small school (Southwest Missouri State) then parlaying that into a HUGE pay raise and a job at Iowa.

In his first year at Iowa, the Hawks, led by point guard Dean Oliver, managed to shock #1 ranked UCONN by a basket. That team also lost to Iowa State and finished in the middle of the Big 10. Sound familiar?

It's a good thing the AD didn't have the same knee jerk reaction of fans on this board who think small school success + one big upset warrant an automatic lifetime contract because one big win is proof of future success.

The point is, Iowa just signed its hot young coach to a huge contract beyond his wildest dreams last year. We did so because he was a great coach with a lot of potential. That hasn't changed. So why is the contract he just signed suddenly obsolete because he beat Florida? Isn't that what he was brought to Iowa to do?
