Deus just got back from playing with team USA. She probably was tired. There are so many new faces that it is going to take time for them to gel and find their rhythm.

Deus is enrolling early which is a good implication she will not be going pro early which many believed
Deus just turned 17 today according to her SM, which means she enrolled at 16 y.o. 🤯

After she completes her freshman season she will still be 17 , and if she was signed after her freshman year , she would still be 17 through half of her rookie pro season. That means she would have to be under the NWSL "Under-18 Entry Mechanism" It has a bunch of rules, including these:

Key Rules for Under-18 Players (as of 2024):
  • Each team is limited to a maximum of two (or up to four, depending on specific, recently updated mechanisms) Under-18 players on their roster/entry list.
  • Must be a guaranteed contract that lasts through the season in which the player turns 18.
  • Players under 18 must reside with a parent or legal guardian.
  • Players under 18 cannot be waived or traded until they turn 18 without parental consent.
  • Must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.

Note that some teams keep the maximum 2 players under contract each season, while others have not used this much. So the selectivity seams to be higher than just your average over 18 NWSL prospect. List of under 18 contracts here:

All of this is to say, there are a number of reasons that Deus may actually spend two years in college beyond just her interest in being on a college team. She will not yet be 18.

Hmm... the flights out of RDU aren't great (seriously, the connector is FRA??), and kinda pricey for Dublin. But CLT has some decent nonstops for the same price.

We've been avoiding air travel for a while, but this might be worth the hassle. Tickets to the match are a measly tenner.

per AI and the N&O: Aer Lingus launched new year-round, non-stop flights from Raleigh-Durham (RDU) to Dublin (DUB) on April 13, 2026, marking the first direct connection between the two cities. Flights operate five times a week on an Airbus A321XLR, taking approximately 7 hours and 20 minutes.

I prefer a direct flight out of any airport within 3 hours of my home over having a connecting flight. especially for international.

If you live along the Piedmont Crescent line, Amtrak is a viable option to Charlotte. But make sure your train is scheduled to arrive at least 3 hours before your flight, so it is not really a time advantage. And you will have to taxi/ride share to the airport. (cheaper than paying for parking anyway)

I think the Dublin flight is like 9 PM at night so the 3:55 arriving train is plenty of buffer. The 6:21 arriving train is cutting it close, unless they fix this TSA thing, and the train is within 15 minutes of o time.

I think the AL flights came up in the search and were about twice the cost of the 1 stoppers. We've been before, so I'm looking for a cheap, quick in-and-out mostly just to see this match, visit a friend or two.

And CLT used to be my homeport, but god, it just sucks so much now that I want to avoid it if possible. Still have plenty of family locally, so can avoid the parking costs.

We'll see how it develops, but it looks like fun. And my FOOTY t-shirt could go global!

Made it to part of our match today with Liberty at Finley Fields. Tons of people there apparently compliments of the fact that they advertised it at a girls' tournament in Greensboro. Hope Munson really impressed in the midfield - blistering speed! She had a rocket go off of the crossbar. We actually had a few of those. Scottie Antonucci really impressed as well. We had a number of players wearing jersey numbers that aren't reflected on the current roster so I'm really not sure who was who but it looks like our 5'11 freshman goalkeeper may have been playing on the back line for awhile (wearing #83). Deus got some time in as a center striker. Liberty was really keying on her - surrounding her with defenders. Pennie was all over the place in the midfield. Riley K made some great passes to Hope Munson. Aven Alvarez and Caitlin Mara anchored the back line. I know we scored at least one goal. I don't believe Liberty scored at all. The scoreboard was not "live." Lots to look forward to in the fall!

I missed the first 10-15 minutes, but was told there was no score when I got there. After that there was only 1 goal scored. That was by Summer Denigan (wearing #30 if I recall). Liberty had a breakaway at the death, but Gundry made a great save to preserve the win. I agree about Pennie, Munson, Antonucci and Alvarez. Denigan also was impressive physically. I'm pretty sure #83 was Izzi Stratton. We had 3 shots go off the crossbar, and the Liberty keeper made at least 2 big saves, so we could have had several more goals. Finishing needs to be better. Devey did not play as far as I could tell. They played 3 thirty minute "halves" (a nod to Click & Clack, the Tappet Brothers of Car Talk). Trayer, Johann and Gundry each played a "half" I think.
