I’m out of the loop for a while but have Rutgers revived anything like this recently? It’s not exactly a game changer like other FB programs that get their Million Dollar donations. But even at 500k, this has been Rutgers main issue with competing vs other FBS programs.

TOTAL Waste of money = should have donated it to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Temple received a tidy sum, but weren't the lone ranger of small schools receiving big.
>Mark S. Cruise '81 '84, a University of Rhode Island football program all-time great, and his wife, Sue Cruise '84, have gifted their alma mater $2 million to both establish a new endowment fund supporting URI's student-athletes and to rename the football team's practice field in Cruises' honor. The Cruises' financial contribution is the largest single monetary gift the URI football program has ever received. >

Fund cancer research…NOT a teenager’s G-wagon!

I'm going to go out on a limb here & say most, if not all, of the people donating these sums are also giving millions in other philanthropic areas. We just don't always know about it.

At the same time, do Rutgers fans want the Towers to take their practice field money back ($5m) ? The Garuttis take their weight room back($1.25m)? The Browns take their locker room back($4m)? The Rodkins to take back their Academic center($15m)? Or, finally, RWJ Barnabas Health take back the APC ($20m)?

Totally different IMO. Those are capital improvements that benefit the entire university and as a donor you get your name slapped on the building for eternity. Win-win. A $500K donation to Temple to use in the transfer portal and to stop players from leaving = flushing money down the toilet.

Hoping this a joke as my sarcasm meter hasn't been activated yet...
Joke? It’s Temple Football. Aside from being a waste of money, you would need to add at least 2 more zeros to the check if they are serious about getting Temple out of the AAC basement.

Don't forget the Bauers who donated for the Bauer Training and Rehabilitation Center among many other facilities.

You going to say the same thing about Monmouth, Delaware, and other small schools?

So you want Rutgers to give up the millions in their donations to feed the homeless in New Jersey?
To help someone down on their luck? Absolutely. It would be a much more meaningful use of funds versus engaging in bidding wars for high school/college aged kids who are already receiving a free education/room/board/support.

If you are basically asking whether helping the homeless or curing cancer is more important than paying high school kids to throw and catch a football you should already know the answer. With that said, donations for better facilities or capital improvements, or even paying an athlete in return for services as opposed to just a check or bag of money, is may be slightly more acceptable.

absolutely - all of these small time programs are dying a slow death. At this point If it’s not in a power-4 conference the school should shut down the football program.

You telling a school what to do with their money is hilarious. “If it’s not in a Power 4 Conference”??? So Iowa St, Vandy, Wake Forest, Rutgers (don’t start) should be in the clear since they’re all in a P4 while Tulane, JMU, Temple, ND St should close up shop even though they’re may have a better chance at the playoffs than those 4 in the P4?

Sorry. You must be a troll.

Come back to this thread in about 10 years and see how many colleges have shut down their football programs. Unless the finances of running a D1 football program changes, these schools will have no choice. P4 conference membership gives schools life at least for now. But Even P4 schools are not in the clear because eventually fans will get bored with watching the same teams in the CFP every year.

Cool
In that case, all Hopkins lacrosse donations should cease to exist

Defund the lacrosse program, and take that money to build more hospitals
Demolish Homewood, sell the seats, tell Coach P thanks for all you've done but we're going strictly medical from here on out

It's been real Hop, but from here on out, our mission is strictly medical
What a waste lax is !!!

So let’s get this straight - you are comparing Hopkins lax, a top D1 program with the most national championships in lax history, that also plays in the B10, has its own lax facilities, and a brand/apparel kids can find in lacrosse shops everywhere = to Temple football (or Delaware or Monmouth or insert irrelevant small school football team)? You sure you didn’t escape from some medical facility down at Hopkins? What is $500K going to do for the Temple Football team? Rent a few players for a season and may be they win one more AAC game? Any player with superstar potential will leave for a bigger payday. Not to mention it’s barely enough to buy one (1) good tight-end these days. All these non-P4 schools are or will be nothing more than minor league feeder programs. Not to mention you can’t compare lax and football - totally different barriers to entry. In the next 10 years billions $$$ will be wasted on zombie football programs only to see them collapse like the great Financial Crisis. If these irrelevant football teams were treated like corporations they would be in bankruptcy right now.

I would say 0.

How have the finances changed in the last 10 years?
Are a bunch of schools making money and now they will be losing money?

Athletic Departments have always been losing money.
See Rutgers itself.

And how many schools have lowered football - let alone dropped it?
0. Zero

In fact the OPPOSITE is happening.
Schools keep moving football up!
Literally, North Dakota State and mighty Sacramento State are moving up this year!

Do you think they are unaware of the finances of running a D1 FBS football program?

Moving up means nothing because top FCS schools realize they are DOA = have a great season, make it to the playoffs but still lose money. FCS teams get smaller payouts and pathetic NCAA reimbursements for playoffs which ends with a net loss. So if you are a perennial FCS powerhouse and losing money - better off taking a shot at FBS and losing money. JMU football finances are a mess since moving up although probably no worse (or may be better) than a lot of FBS programs.

First you said schools will shut down football.

Now are saying it makes sense to move up from FCS to FBS.

So which is it?
Schools are going to drop football altogether or more schools are going to keep moving up to FBS?

I thought Hopkins was irrelevant because they’re not a Power 4 Program and “all programs that’s not Power 4 should shut down and blah blah blah…”

Are you one of those Goalpost Movers?

I’m quoting you. Your words. Hopkins is only D3 Football so according to you, they must shut down. It’s also a waste of money to spend on LAX because it’s not Power 4 Football.

Your words, not mine. You either live in absolutes or you don’t.

I love lax but football drives the bus, generating 85 % of the total revenue
Hop is a great school, but they could win the next 100 natties in a row for lacrosse and it wouldn't be a drop in the bucket compared to major D1 football

Whoever wanted to donate the money to Temple cared enough to do so - instead of shaming the person or guilting him into giving for another cause, we should be applauding effort and hoping to emulate that here OTB

Will it make a difference? Probably not
But stranger things have happened - maybe KC reels in an under the radar type QB, leads them to a decent bowl, and elevates their program to levels they desire to be

Regulations will happen in college fb
Between the portal and some kind of salary cap, it has to
Otherwise, the game will collapse

But to shame the guy for giving 500k to something he's passionate about?
On a college football message board?
While we're all here discussing the game we all know and love?
That's some weird **** right there

As usual you open a thread on the free board and see it filled with stupid comments.

The people saying its a waste of money are jealous because they will never be in a position to do that.

Good for the person donating if they believe in the mission.
