The pitcher hit his hat immediately after the call. I just don't see why every pitch isn't called by the robot. Some ump got overturned 6 times. What happens when he misses the seventh call and no one can challenge his bad eyesight?
What did they not like? Does it pick up a breaking pitch catching part of the plate or does it not catch the black? They've tried all robot balls and strikes in the minors, and noboy liked it.
They didn't like the pitch clock when it started. They didn't like the designated hitter at first (or in the case of the National League for years). People don't like change is what I would blame for that. I used to play stickball as a kid and we drew a box on a wall. If the ball was in the box it was a strike. They do it in wiffle ball now. I think if a hitter knows what is going to be called a strike it will help offense. They've tried all robot balls and strikes in the minors, and noboy liked it.
The black is not the plate. You can't catch the black. It was put there for safety. As the pitch in the video any part of the ball touches the white, it is a strike. What did they not like? Does it pick up a breaking pitch catching part of the plate or does it not catch the black?
I looked this up and you are correct sir. I don't why I doubted you except for the fact that I have always heard the phrase, "painting the black", so I assumed, uh oh, that it was part of the strike zone. The black is not the plate. I would have loved a game where Maddox and Glavine and John Franco would have to actually throw a ball over the plate. I still think that's why their post season success was much less than their in season success. They made them throw the ball over the plate in the post season. Which is unfair to them also since they now have to pitch differently than they did all year.
