Cal was an innovator. The dribble drive at the D1 level is attributed greatly to him, while not the creator. The OAD roster turnover is his creation. He was chided for ruining college basketball by the elite snobs until Coach K did it better. Now, Duke and Zona and others are doing it better. The difference is, I think, coaching and culture and, yes, systems. Cal was hot when he was breaking ground but when others caught up, he fell. I think his time as a Final Four coach has passed. He probably does not believe that. He thinks if he can portal some weight and girth into his front court (that sounds like a metaphor for something else) he can win again. But, that is not innovation. Others will beat him if he is simply playing their game.

I disagree. I think Pope is a better coach. He doesn't lose to mid majors in the tournament, or at home and he actually has proven he can take less talent and beat much more talented teams, when he has a healthy roster.
Calipari is nothing more than a talent collector, he has a history of losing to mid majors and losing to underdogs. He runs the same tired old offense and the same garbage defense he has always run, which is how Oakland and SP beat his a**.
Give pope the roster Cal had this year and he’s a 1 or a 2 seed. Know how I know? Because he got a 3 seed last year with much less talent and did it through injuries.

Pope never won a ncaa tournament game at byu. He wins .556 of SEC games. Pope will never be a hall of fame coach like cal. Mark pope has never won any kind of championships. Pope tied for 2nd a couple of times in western athletic conference and 2nd twice in west coast conference. That’s really sad.
while cal has been to 6 final fours and won 2012 championships. He’s won SEC, A-10, CUSA, championships. He’s even won the 2002 NIT. Pope has never won nothing at any level!!!

Cal was a dominant center away from being able to compete this year at the highest levels. We were way more away than one dude.

There is maybe 5 to 10 coaches that would have been an improvement over Cal. Scott Drew isn't one of them and certainly Mark Pope isn't either. I don't know how you could be less prepared for a coaching search than Mitch was when Cal left.
Pope isn't better than Cal. He has lost so many games he should not have lost both at home and on the road by margins that are not defensible. With Pope all the hope is gone. You at least have hope with Cal. I have never felt as helpless as a fan as I do now.
Its sad that people are still trying to justify this coach to us. He is not a good coach period end of sentence. Anyone trying to convince us he is, is a Pope pumper.
